  • Propane fires of 1000 to 3000 kW in the ISO 9705 fire room were simulated using FDS to study the problem of decreasing temperature with increasing fire size. A criterion is proposed for under-ventilated fires. The computed temperature at 2000 kW and above was lower than that at 1500 kW. The heat release rate was limited by a lack of oxygen in the simulation. It was found that the heat release rate can therefore be a criterion for under-ventilated fires in simulations. Fires of 1700 kW and above in the ISO 9705 fire room are predicted to be under-ventilated.

  • Experimental and numerical studies were conducted to investigate the thermal and chemical characteristics of heptane fires in a full-scale ISO 9705 room. Representative fire conditions were considered for over-ventilated fire (OVF) and under-ventilated fire (UVF). Fuel flow rate and doorway width were changed to create OVF and UVF conditions. Detailed comparisons of temperature and species concentrations between experimental and numerical data were presented in order to validate the predictive performance of FDS (Fire Dynamic Simulator). The OVF and UVF were explicitly characterized with distributions of temperature and product formation measured in the upper layer, as well as combustion efficiency and global equivalence ratio. It was shown that the numerical results provided a quantitatively realistic prediction of the experimental results observed in the OVF conditions. For the UVF, the numerically predicted temperature showed reasonable agreement with the measured temperature. The predicted steady-state volume fractions of $O_2$, $CO_2$, CO and THC also agreed quantitatively with the experimental data. Although there were some limitations to predict accurately the transient behavior in terms of CO production/consumption in the UVF condition, it was concluded that the current FDS was very useful tool to predict the fire characteristics inside the compartment for the OVF and UVF.

  • This paper deals with the development of an approach for evaluating the squash load and rigidity of unprotected concrete filled steel columns at elevated temperatures. The current approach of evaluating these properties is reviewed. It is shown that with a non-uniform temperature distribution, over the composite cross-section, the calculations for the squash load and rigidity are tedious in the current method. A simplified approach is proposed to evaluate the temperature distribution, squash load, and rigidity of composite columns. This approach is based on the model in Eurocode 4 and can conveniently be used to calculate the resistance to axial compression of a concrete filled steel column for any fire resistance time. The accuracy of the proposed approach is assessed by comparing the predicted strengths against the results of fire tests on concrete filled circular and square steel columns. The applicability of the proposed approach to a design situation is illustrated through a numerical example.

  • Mathematical modeling and numerical calculation on the flow and thermal characteristics induced by fire in a partial enclosure are performed. The solution procedures include the Shvab-Zeldovich approximation for the physical transport equations, low Reynolds number k-.epsilon. model for the turbulent fluid flow and Discrete Ordinate method(DOM) to calculate the radiative heat transfer. PMMA(Polymethylmethacrylate) is adopted as a solid fuel. Two different cases are considered : combustions with and without gas radiation occuring in a open cavity for variable pyrolyzing location of PMMA. When the fire source is located at the left-wall, the flow region of flame gas is limited at the left-wall and ceiling and recirculation region of inlet gas is formulated at neat the floor. In case of neglecting the radiative heat transfer, more large flame size and higher temperature is predicted. It is essential to consider the radiative heat transfer for analysis of fire phenomenon.

  • This study is aimed to analyze the floe patterns and thermal characteristics by computer simulation under the variations of fire strength for the logitudinal tunnel, from which flow and heat distributions are predicted in the longitudinal tunnel. Through the results of numerical computations, followings are found; one is that the volume flow rate is discontinuously increasing as closer to fire location, and the other is that a critical design to get the faster flow rate is required because of existence of backlayer flow for the high fire strength in view of safety for the people in fire of the tunnel.

  • Atrium buildings are commonly found in Hong Kong since 1980. Those spaces are usually crowded with people and so fire protection systems have to be installed for providing a safe environment. Smoke control system was identified to be important but no clear design guidelines are available because the smoke filling process was not well-understood. In this paper., Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) or fire field model is applied to study the smoke filling pattern in atrium. Two common cases on smoke spreading out from a shop adjacent to the atrium; and with a fire located at the atrium floor itself were considered. Simulations with a modified form of the CFD package TEAM were performed. Application of the predicted results Is illustrated.

  • Fixed temperature heat detectors that respond to the heat generated in fire plume and alarm when the temperature reaches a specified point, give a great influences to the loss of life and property according to their reaction sensitivity. In this study, hot wind tunnel tests and compartment fire experiments were performed to investigate the response time and temperature of fixed temperature heat detector. As a result, simple equations were derived which can be predicted the response time and temperature of the fixed temperature heat detector for the ramp type fire. Also other useful data, such as the effective temperature, time constant, response time index(RTI) were obtained.

  • In this study, to assess the validity of scaling law which was based on the ventilation factor and utilized in fields of compartment fires, numerical simulations were conducted on full- and 2/5 reduced-scale compartment fires using FDS and simulation results were compared with the previously published experimental data. The numerical modeling used in this study was verified by comparing the predicted temperature at several points of the upper layer with the experiment data. Temperature and concentration distribution inside of compartments and velocity profile at door of compartment are analyzed to assess the validity of scaling law. Comparison between the predicted results on the full- and reduced-scale compartments shows good agreements on the inner compartment flow patterns, outflowing flame patterns from the compartments, and vertical temperature distributions.

  • In S. Korea, recently, building fire accidents of residential accommodations or recreational facilities have taken place more frequently than before. Among various building constructions, Multi-layered structure, such as office-residential complex, are mostly made in S. korea. $O_2$, $CO_2$, CO, $NO_x$, $SO_x$, and HCl, these gases has toxic hazard and harmful for human body. And it is predicted that different concentration of released gases from diesel pool fire with upper and lower layer. Therefore, this study reports the fire characteristics of Multi-layered structure by analyzing the fire behavior and concentration of combustion gases of a experimental compartment via real scale fire experiment, in order to predict risks and secure safety for similar fire accidents.
