The evolution of incipient soot particles has been examined by high resolution electron microscopy (HRTEM) and elemental analyzer in ethylene-air inverse diffusion flames. Laser Induced Incandescence(LII) and laser scattering methods were introduced for examining the soot volume fraction and morphological properties in combustion generated soot qualitatively. Soot particles, collected by thermophoretic sampling, were analyzed by using HRTEM to examine the nano structure of precursor particles. HRTEM micrographs apparently reveal a transformation of condensed phase of semitransparent tar-like material into precursor particles with relatively distinct boundary and crystalline which looks like regular layer structures. During this evolution histories, C/H analysis was also performed to estimate the chemical evolution of precursor particles. The changes of C/H ratio of soot particles with respect to residence time can be divided into two parts: one is a very slowly increasing regime where tar-like materials are transformed into precursor particles (inception process) the other is an increasing region with constant rate where surface growth affects the increase of C/H ratio dominantly (surface growth process). These results provide a clear picture of a transition to mature soot from precursor materials.
We have made intensive calculations on the maximum relative sunspot number and the date of solar maximum of 23rd solar cycle, by using the statistical and precursor methods to predict solar activity cycle. According to our results of solar data processing by statistical method, solar maximum comes at between February and July of 2000 year and at that time, the smoothed sunspot number will reach to $114.3\~122.8$. while precursor method gives rather dispersed value of $118\~17$ maximum sunspot number. It is found that prediction by statistical method using smoothed relative sunspot number is more accurate than by any method to use any data of 10.7cm radio fluxes and geomagnetic aa, Ap indexes, from the full analysis of solar cycle pattern of these data. In fact, current ascending pattern of 23rd solar cycle supports positively our predicted values. Predicted results by precursor method for $Ap_{avg},\;aa_{31-36}$ indexes show similar values to those by statistical method. Therefore, these indexes can be used as new precursors for the prediction of 23rd or next solar cycle.
Motivated by learning from experience and exploiting existing knowledge in civil nuclear operations, we have developed in-house generic Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) models for pressurized and boiling water reactors. The models are computationally light, handy, transparent, user-friendly, and easily adaptable to account for major plant-specific differences. They cover the common internal initiating events, frontline and support systems reliability and dependencies, human-factors, common-cause failures, and account for new factors typically overlooked in many PSAs. For quantification, the models use generic US reliability data, precursor analysis reports, the ETHZ Curated Nuclear Events Database, and experts' opinions. Moreover, uncertainties in the most influential basic events are addressed. The generated results show good agreement with assessments available in the literature with detailed PSAs. We envision the models as an unbiased framework to measure nuclear operational risk with the same "ruler", and hence support inter-plant risk comparisons that are usually not possible due to differences in plant-specific PSA assumptions and scopes. The models can be used for initial risk screening, order-of-magnitude precursor analysis, and other research/pedagogic applications especially when no plant-specific PSAs are available. Finally, we are using the generic models for large-scale precursor analysis that will generate big picture trends, lessons, and insights.

Oxide buffer layers for YBCO coated conductors were fabricated using MOD processing and development of microstructure and texture were investigated. A $CeO_2$ buffer layers were formed on RABiTS tape. Acetate-based precursor solution was employed to synthesize the precursor solution. Subsequently, the precursor solution was stabilized and modified with triethanolamine. $CeO_2$ precursor gel film was coated and annealed in $Ar/H_2$ atmosphere at high temperature. An annealed $CeO_2$ film shows mixed orientation with high (001) texturing. It was shown that (111) texture of $CeO_2$ layers were enhanced by multiple coating. This degradation was attributed to development of microcracks in the multiply coated $CeO_2$ films. Also discussed are the synthesis and the characterization of $La_2Zr_2O_7$ (LZO) buffer layers on RABiTS tape. A biaxially textured LZO buffer layer was fabricated with MOD processing method using metal alkoxide based precursor solution. It was shown that the LZO film were epitaxially grown on RABiTS tape and crack-free & uniform surface was obtained after annealing in $Ar/H_2$ atmosphere.
The effects of reacted precursors on phase evolution, microstructure, $J_{c}$ and junctional characteristic of the inter-granular contacts were investigated in Ag-sheathed T1-1223 tapes prepared using three kinds of reacted precursors, and compared to those in the tape prepared using an unreacted precursor The precursors were prepared by heat-treating a mixture of Sr-Ba-Ca-Cu-O, $Tl_2$$O_3$, PbO and $Bi_2$$O_3$ powders at $805^{\circ}C$ (precursor I ), $840^{\circ}C$ (precursor II ) and $905^{\circ}C$(precursor III) for 20 min. Tl-1223 phase content, grain size and J\ulcorner in the tapes appeared to increase in an order of precursors I, II and III Compared to tapes prepared using an unreacted precursor, the tapes prewar ed using precursors II and III revealed reduced pore and impurity densities and an enhanced texture. Also characteristic of inter -granular contacts and fraction of strong-links were improved. The improved properties are attributed to enhanced densification resulting from using the reacted precursors.s.
Precursor analysis is widely used in the nuclear industry to judge the significance of events relevant to safety. However, in case of events that may damage equipment through effects that are not ordinary functional dependencies, the analysis may not always fully appreciate the potential for further evolution of the event. For fires, which are one class of such events, this paper discusses modelling challenges that need to be overcome when performing a probabilistic precursor analysis. The events used to analyze are selected from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Fire Incidents Records Exchange (FIRE) Database.

$ZnO_{x}$ films were deposited by conventional thermal evaporation method. Zinc acetate was used as precursor. XRD and SEM results shows films as mixed stats of ZnO and zinc acetate. And EDX measurements reseal composition of films as $ZnO_{x}$.
The activation energy of dissociative adsorption of oxygen on polycrystalline nickel surface is calculated from adsorption isotherms obtained using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Negative value of this activation energy (-5.9 kJ/mol) indicates that the adsorption takes place through an undissociated precursor state. An adsorption energy for this precursor state is calculated assuming the precursor state as a moleculary physisorbed state ($E_{ad}$ = -7.9 kJ/mol). Finally, an adsorption isotherm equation is derived as a function of the gas exposure, which agrees with the experimental isotherms reasonably good.
The effects of phosphate concentration in the medium, feeding of biosynthetic precursor, and the addition of exogenous berberine on cell growth and berberine production were studied in cell suspension cultures of Thalictrum rugosum. The depletion of phosphate in the medium enhanced the specific productivity up to twofold with significant release of berberine into the medium. Extracellular berberine was 19% of the total in the culture without phosphate while it was 2-5% of total berberine in the culture with even low amounts of phosphate. Precursor feeding was not effective in enhancing alkaloid formation. Initial presence of exogenous berberine did not have much effect on cell growth and alkaloid production. It was found that the cells have the capacity to take up large quantities of berberine. When $500{\;}mg{\cdot}l^{-1}$ of berberine was added exogenously at the beginning, 81% of total berberine was found in the cells.
$TiO_2$ nanopowder was synthesized by chemical vapor condensation (CVC) process and its photocatalytic property depending on microstructure was considered in terns of decomposition rate of organic compound. In order to control microstructure of $TiO_2$ nanopowder such as particle size and degree of agglomeration, precursor flow rate representing number concentration was changed as a process variable. In TEM observation, spherical $TiO_2$ nanoparticles with average size of 20 nm showed gradual increases in particle size and degree of agglomeration with increase of precursor flow rate. Also decomposition rate of organic compound increased with decreasing precursor flow rate. Thus, it was concluded that photocatalytic property was enhanced by targe surface area of disperse $TiO_2$ nanoparticles synthesized at lower precursor flow rate condition in CVC process.
