In this paper are described recent studies about variable nozzles, that are a rectangular type nozzle and an axisymmetric type nozzle, of the precooled turbojet engine(S-engine) which are developed for the demonstration of the key technologies for the propulsion system of the hypersonic airplane and the first stage propulsion of the TSTO space plane. For the rectangular nozzle, three types of C-shaped carbon/carbon composite cowls which includes subscale model of the precooled turbojet engine are fabricated and the fine attachment to the ramp is confirmed. For the firing of the S-engine, stainless steel cowl with concrete heat insulator are fabricated and tested for 20 sec. Axisymmetric variable plug nozzle which is made of C/C material is fabricated and pressurized by the cold flow test. The axisymmetric plug nozzle can be operative up to 0.57 MPa of nozzle inlet pressure.
This paper presents the development status of a subscale precooled turbojet engine "S-engine" for the hypersonic cruiser and space place. S-engine employs the precooled-cycle using liquid hydrogen as fuel and coolant. It has $23cm{\times}23cm$ of rectangular cross section, 2.6 m of the overall length and about 100 kg of the target weight employing composite materials for a variable-geometry rectangular air-intake and nozzle. The design thrust and specific impulse at sea-level-static(SLS) are 1.2 kN and 2,000 sec respectively. After the system design and component tests, a prototype engine made of metal was manufactured and provided for the system firing test using gaseous hydrogen in March 2007. The core engine performance could be verified in this test. The second firing test using liquid hydrogen was conducted in October 2007. The engine, fuel supplying system and control system for the next flight test were used in this test. We verified the engine start-up sequence, compressor-turbine matching and performance of system and components. A flight test of S-engine is to be conducted by the Balloon-based Operation Vehicle(BOV) at Taiki town in Hokkaido in October 2008. The vehicle is about 5 m in length, 0.55 m in diameter and 500 kg in weight. The vehicle is dropped from an altitude of 40 km by a high-altitude observation balloon. After 40 second free-fall, the vehicle pulls up and S-engine operates for 60 seconds up to Mach 2. High altitude tests of the engine components corresponding to the BOV flight condition are also conducted.
Fundamental experiments with single row heat exchanger were conducted for the purpose of validating new defrosting method using jet impingement. The coolant temperature were varied from 83 to 250 K. We used the jet periodically, once in 50 second and the duration of the jet is 0.1 second. The effect of the coolant temperature in the effectiveness of the jet defrosting was investigated.
A core engine for pre-cooled turbojet engines is designed and its component performances are examined both by CFD analyses and experiments. The engine is designed for a flight demonstration of precooled turbojet engine cycle. The engine uses gas hydrogen as fuel. The external boundary including measurement devices is set within $23cm{\times}23cm$ of rectangular cross section, in order to install the engine downstream of the air intake. The rotation speed is 80000 rpm at design point. Mixed flow compressor is selected to attain high pressure ratio and small diameter by single stage. Reverse type main combustor is selected to reduce the engine diameter and the rotating shaft length. The temperature at main combustor is determined by the temperature limit of non-cooled turbine. High loading turbine is designed to attain high pressure ratio by single stage. The firing test of the core engine is conducted using components of small pre-cooled turbojet engine. Gas hydrogen is injected into the main burner and hot gas is generated to drive the turbine. Air flow rate of the compressor can be modulated by a variable geometry exhaust nozzle, which is connected downstream of the core engine. As a result, 75% rotation speed is attained without hazardous vibration and heat damage. Aerodynamic performances of both compressor and turbine are obtained and evaluated independently.

Hypersonic wind tunnel test of the rectangular variable geometry intake is performed. For realization of a Precooled turbojet engine, development of a hypersonic ramjet engine is planned. To investigate performance of the intake of the hypersonic ramjet engine, wind tunnel test is done with freestream Mach number of 5.1. The total pressure recovery was 18 % with 12.9 % of ramp bleed. Several reasons for low total pressure recovery are shown. Supersonic internal compression is not enough. Then, the throat Mach number is high (M2.61) and total pressure losses at the terminal shock is large. Supersonic flow at the throat and position of the terminal shock is sensitive to a difference of the second ramp's throat height and the third ramp's throat height. Flow separations at the second ramp's trailing edge and the third ramp's leading edge are seen those could result in the trigger of unstart. The seal mechanism between the ramps and the sidewalls is important.
In this paper are presented TSTO system analysis including some controlled variables on the engine operation such as a fuel flow rate and a pressure ratio of compressor, as well as variables on the trajectory. TSTO studied here is accelerated up to Mach 6 by a fly-back booster powered by air breathing engines. Three different types of engine cycle were treated for propulsion system of the booster, such as a turbo ramjet, a precooled turbojet and an EXpander cycle Air Turbo Ramjet (ATREX). The history of the controlled variables on the engine operation was optimized by Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) to accomplish the minimum fuel consumption. The trajectory was also optimized simultaneously. The results showed that the turbo ramjet gave the best fuel consumption. The optimal trajectory was almost the same except in the transonic range and just before reaching to Mach 6. The history of the pressure ratio of compressor considerably depended on the engine type. It is concluded that simultaneous optimization for engine control and trajectory is effective especially for a high-speed airplane propelled by turbojets like the TSTO booster.
