A Study on the Removal of Silver in Copper Electrolyte (황산동전해액(黃酸銅電解液) 중 은(銀(Ag)) 제거(除去)를 위한 연구(硏究))

  • A study on the removal of silver(Ag) in copper electrolyte was carried out to produce high purity copper by using various method such as ion exchange resin, activated carbon adsorption, copper cementation with powder and wire, CuS precipitation. Parameters, such as reaction time, reaction temperature, addition amount etc. were investigated to determine the effective condition of silver removal. CuS precipitation and ion exchange using Lewatit TP214 was found to be effective. Especially, silver content in copper electrolyte was reduced from 10 ppm to less than 0.1 ppm by ion exchange with Lewatit TP214.

  • The objectives of this study were the development of a synthesis technique for highly active nanosized ITO powder and the understanding of the reaction mechanisms of the ITO precursors. The precipitation and agglomeration phenomena in ITO and $In_{2}O_{3}$ precursors are very sensitive to reaction temperature, pH, and coexisting ion species. Excessive $Cl^-$ ion and $Sn^{+4}$ ions had a negative effect an synthesizing highly active powders. However, with a relevant stabilizing treatment the shape and size of ITO and $In_{2}O_{3}$ precursors could be controlled and high density sintered products of ITO were obtained. By applying the reprecipitation process (or stabilization technique), highly active ITO and $In_{2}O_{3}$ powders were synthesized. Sintering these powders at $1500^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours produced 97% dense ITO bodies.

  • Uranium metal used for fabrication of fuel for research reactors in India is generally produced by magnesio-thermic reduction of $UF_4$. Performance of magnesio-thermic reaction and recovery and quality of uranium largely depends on properties of $UF_4$. As ammonium diuranate (ADU) is first product in powder form in the process flow-sheet, properties of $UF_4$ depend on properties of ADU. ADU is generally produced from uranyl nitrate solution (UNS) for natural uranium metal production and from uranyl fluoride solution (UFS) for low enriched uranium metal production. In present paper, ADU has been produced via both the routes. Variation of uranium recovery and crystal structure and composition of ADU with progress in precipitation reaction has been studied with special attention on first appearance of the precipitate Further, ADU produced by two routes have been calcined to $UO_3$, then reduced to $UO_2$ and hydroflorinated to $UF_4$. Effect of two different process routes of ADU precipitation on the characteristics of ADU, $UO_3$, $UO_2$ and $UF_4$ were studied here.

Preparation of TiO2Powder by Hydrothemal Precipitation Method and their Photocatalytic Properties (수열합성법에 의한 TiO2 분말 제조와 광촉매 특성)

  • $TiO_2$ powders were prepared from titanium (IV) sulfate ($Ti(SO_4)_2$) solution using ammonia solution at low reaction temperature ($80{\sim}100^{\circ}C$) and atmospheric pressure by hydrothermal precipitation method without calcination. The effect of reaction conditions, such as reaction temperature, initial concentration of titanium (IV) sulfate ($Ti(SO_4)_2$) solution, pH of mixture solution and the physical properties of the prepared $TiO_2$, such as crystallite structure, crystallite size were investigated. The photocatalytic activity of prepared $TiO_2$ was tested by the photolysis of brilliant blue FCF (BB-FCF) under the UV and the analysis of UV-VIS diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The physical properties of prepared $TiO_2$ were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), photoluminescence spectrometer (PL), particle size distribution measurements. The crystallite size and crystallinity of prepared $TiO_2$ increased with increasing titanium (IV) sulfate ($Ti(SO_4)_2$) concentration, but photocatalytic activity decreased. The crystallite size decreased with increasing pH of mixture solution, but photocatalytic activity increased. The crystallinity and photocatalytic activity increased with increasing reaction temperature. The results showed that anatase type $TiO_2$ could be prepared by hydrothermal precipitation method using titanium (IV) sulfate ($Ti(SO_4)_2$) solution and ammonia solution at low reaction temperature and atmospheric pressure without calcination.

Genesis of Bonanza-style Ores in Uichang Area, Changwon City: Geochemical Interpretation by Reaction Path Modeling (창원시 의창지역 보난자형 금광상 성인 : 반응경로 모델링에 의한 지구화학적 해석)

  • Gold mineralization of Samjeong and Yongjang gold mines in Uichang area shows characteristics of Bonanza-type gold deposits. Ores are mainly developed along the contact parts between quartz vein and arkosic sandstone beds(Fe-rich bed) in sedimentary rock. Electrum, silver sulfide and sulfate minerals are mainly in the ores. On the other hand, gold mineralization is less developed in cherty rock and andesitic rock than arkosic sandstone. The study highlights characteristics of gold precipitation in the deposit on the basis of numerical modelling of the reactions between the assumed hydrothermal ore fluids with multicomponent heterogeneous equilibrium calculations. Aqueous species, gases and minerals, containing electrum are included in the calculations. The reaction result between hydrothermal ore fluids and arkosic sandstone show that pH increasing in the ore-forming fluid would trigger precipitation of quartz, chlorite, sericite, chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, electrum, actinolite and feldspar. The numerical modelling also illustrates the drastic increase of pH and desulfidation lead to precipitation of electrum. Ag/Au ratios in the ore vary with pH conditions and subsequently precipitation of silver-bearing sulfides such as acanthite and polybasite. The modelling of the reaction between andesitic rock and ore-forming fluid shows that mineral assemblages of the case are analogous to ones of the reaction between arkosic sandstone and fluid except the latter has little portion of electrum. The abovementioned modelling results suggest that gold-silver mineralization is bounded by host rocks at the study area.

  • Two-dimensional modeling studies using TOUGHREACT were conducted to investigate the coupling between flow and transport developed as a consequence of differences in density, dissolution/ precipitation, and medium heterogeneity. The model includes equilibrium reactions for aqueous species, kinetic reactions between tile solid phases and aqueous constituents, and full coupling of porosity and permeability changes resulting from precipitation and dissolution reactions in porous media. Generally, the evolutions in the concentrations of the aqueous phase are intimately related to the reaction-front dynamics. Plugging of the medium contributed to significant transients in patterns of flow and mass transport.

Effects of pH on Preparation of Au-Coated $TiO_2$ Nanoparticles by Deposition-Precipitation Method

  • We prepared the Au-coated $TiO_2$ (Au/$TiO_2$) nanoparticles by deposition-precipitation (DP) method with and without bases (urea or NaOH) and investigated the effects of pH on the preparation of Au/$TiO_2$ nanoparticles for various kinds of bases. For the DP method without bases, the Au nanoparticles in the diameter of about 50 nm were generated in the solution by the reduction reaction with trisodium citrate and they did not deposit on the surface of $TiO_2$. For the DP method with bases, Au precursors deposited on the surface of $TiO_2$ and then reduced to the Au nanoparticles in the diameter of 4-5 nm on the surface of $TiO_2$ by the reaction with trisodium citrate.

Development of a Virus Elution and Concentration Procedure for Detecting Norovirus in Cabbage and Lettuce

  • In this study, a rapid and efficient concentrating procedure that can be used for detecting viruses in vegetables was developed. The Sabin strain of poliovirus type 1 was used to evaluate the efficiency of virus recovery. The procedure included: (a) elution with 0.25 M threonine-0.3 M NaCl pH 9.5; (b) polyethylene glycol (PEG) 8000 precipitation; (c) chloroform extraction; (d) 2$^{nd}$ PEG precipitation; (f) RNA extraction; (g) reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) combined with semi-nested PCR. The overall recoveries by elution/concentration were 29.0% from cabbage and 13.7% from lettuce. The whole procedure usually takes 18 hr. The overall detection sensitivity was 100 RT-PCR units of genogroup II norovirus (GII NoV)/25 g cabbage and 100 RT-PCR units of GII NoV/10 g lettuce. The virus detecting method developed in this study should facilitate the detection of low levels of NoV in cabbage and lettuce.
