  • The precipitates of $L2_1$-type $Ni_2AlHf$ phase in B2-ordered NiAl system has been observed by using transmission electron microscope (TEM). The hardness of as-quenched NiAl-Hf alloys is high due to the larger strengthening. However, age hardening of this alloy is not main effect to increase hardness compared to the large microstructural variations during aging. At the beginning of aging, the $L2_1$-type $Ni_2AlHf$ precipitates keep a lattice coherency with the NiAl matrix. The orientation relationship between the $Ni_2 AlHf$ precipitate and the NiAl matrix is <100>$_{Ni2AlHf}$//<100>$_{NiAl}$, {001}$_{Ni2AlHf}$//{001}$_{NiAl}$. By aging treatment for long time $Ni_2AlHf$ precipitates lost their coherency and change their morphology to the spherical ones surrounded by misfit dislocations. The orientation relationship between the NiAl matrix and the $Ni_2AlHf$ precipitates, however, has been kept even after longer aging time. The lattice misfit between the $Ni_2AlHf$ precipitate and the NiAl matrix has been calculated by the selected electron diffraction patterns, and the spacings of misfit dislocations is about 4.5% at 1173 K.

  • To analyze the factors on stretch-flangeability for 980 MPa-grade hot-rolled steels, two types of steels (Fe-Cr and Fe-Mo) were manufactured by hot-rolling. Manufactured steels at the low coiling temperature, such as 400 and $500^{\circ}C$, had poor stretch-flangeability due to un-uniformly distributed carbides and a large deviation of interphase hardness. However, when the coiling temperature was set at $650^{\circ}C$ with Fe-Cr steel, 998 MPa of ultimate tensile strength, 19% of total elongation and 65% of the hole expanding ratio were achieved by microstructural constituents of polygonal ferrite (PF) and granular ferrite (GF) dispersed with fine carbides (<50 nm). Therefore, the material to attain 980 MPa with superior formability was the Fe-Cr steel that was precipitation-hardened in polygonal ferrite and granular ferrite at the coiling temperature $650^{\circ}C$.

  • The effects of homogenization, hot-forging, and annealing condition on microstructure and hardness of a modified STD61 hot-work tool steel were investigated. The ingot specimen had a dendritic structure consisting of bainite and martensite. Spherical VC particles of approximately 50 nm and cuboidal (V,Ti)C particles of about 100 nm were observed in the ingot specimen. After homogenization, the dendritic structure was blurred, and the difference in hardness between martensite and bainite became narrow, resulting in the more homogeneous microstructure. Needle-shaped non-equilibrium $(Fe,Cr)_3C$ particles were additionally observed in the homogenized specimen. The hot-forged specimen had bainite single phase with spherical VC, cuboidal (V,Ti)C, and needle-shaped $(Fe,Cr)_3C$ particles. After annealing at $860^{\circ}C$, the microstructures of specimens were ferrite single phase with various carbides such as VC, $(Fe,Cr)_7C_3$, and $(Fe,Cr)_{23}C_6$ because of relatively slow cooling rates. The size of carbides in annealed specimens decreased with increasing cooling rate, resulting in the increase of hardness.

  • Because of beautiful glossy and color, the value of gold leverage is very high in Europe. To improve the quality of gold alloys, we performed heat treatment on 14 K white gold alloys by variously changing age-hardening conditions. Age-hardening behavior and the related phase transformation changes were studied to elucidate the hardening mechanism of 14 K white gold alloy. For solid solution treatment [ST], casted gold alloy specimens were treated at high temperature ($750^{\circ}C$) for 30 minutes, and the specimens dropped to water to quench them. For Age-hardening treatment [AT], the specimens were treated at various temperatures ($250{\sim}300^{\circ}C$). After the heat treatment, we observed the phenomenon to increase hardness from 126 Hv to 166 Hv by Vicker's hardness tester. Through electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA) mapping analysis, we investigated that irregular particles were changed uniformly. In the SEM and OM images, two phases of matrix and particle-likestructures were observed, and the precipitation of these elements from the matrix progressed during age-hardening. By transmission electron microscope and X-ray diffraction observation, it was revealed that the formation of the Au3Cu superstructure contributed to the age-hardening at $270^{\circ}C$ in the gold alloy. After the heat treatment, this analysis shows that casted gold alloys were to improve hardness and to moderate surface defects at specific temperatures and duration.

  • Glass ceramics for dental crown prosthesis were prepared by crystallization of CaO-MgO-SiO2-$P_2O_5-TiO_2$ glasses. Their crystallization behaviors have been investigated as a function of heattreatment temperature, holding time and chemical composition in relation to mechinical properties. Crystallization peak temperatures were determined by differential thermal analysis(DTA). Crystalline phases and mircostructures of heat-treated sample were determined by the means of powder X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). The final crystalline phase assemblages and the microstructures of the samples were found to be dependent on glass compositions, heattreatment temperature, and holding time. 1st crystallization peak temperature(TP), affected strongly by apatite, was found to be increased or decreased. From the experiment, the following results were obtained : 1. The crystallization peak temperature($T_P$) formed by apatite increased until adding up to 9wt% $TiO_2$ to base glass composition, then decreased above that. 2. Apatite($Ca_{10}P_6O_{25}$), whitlockite(${\beta}-3CaO-P_2O_5$), $\beta$-wollastonite($CaSiO_3$), magnesium tianate($MaTiO_3$) and diopside(CaO-MgO-$2SiO_2$) crystal phase were precipitated in MgO-CaO-$SiO_2-TiO_2-P_2O_5$ glass system containing 9wt% and 11wt% of $TiO_2$ 3. Vickers hardness of samples increased with increasing heat-treatment temperature and Vickers hardness of S415T9 samples heat-treated at 1075 was approxi-mately 813Kg $mm^{-2}$ as maximum value. 4. Vickers hardness of samples increased due to precipitation of apatite, whitlockite, $\beta$-wollastonite, magnesium titanate, and diopside crystal phases within glass matrix.

  • The hardening effect by ice-quenching after oxidation of a Pd-Ag-Sn-Au metal-ceramic alloy during porcelain firing simulation was investigated by means of hardness test, field emission scanning electron microscopic observations, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The hardness decreased by ice-quenching after oxidation, which was induced by the homogenization of the ice-quenched specimen. The decreased hardness by ice-quenching after oxidation was recovered from the wash stage which was the first stage of the remaining firing process for bonding porcelain. After wash stage, the hardness of the ice-quenched specimens decreased during the subsequent porcelain firing process. But the final hardness of the ice-quenched specimens after oxidation was higher than that of the specimens cooled at stage 0 after oxidation. The increase in hardness of the specimens during the first firing process was caused by the lattice strains generated at the interface between the face-centered cubic Pd-Ag-rich matrix and the face-centered tetragonal Pd3(Sn, Ga, In) precipitate. The decrease in hardness of the specimens during the remaining firing process was caused by the microstructural coarsening.

  • Hardening mechanism associated with post-firing heat treatment of softening heat treated and then firing simulated Pd-Ag-Au alloy for bonding porcelain was examined by observing the change in hardness, crystal structure and microstructure. By post-firing heat treatment of as-cast, solution treated and pre-firing heat treated specimens at $650^{\circ}C$ after casting, the hardness value increased within 10 minutes. Then, hardness consistently increased until 30 minutes, and gap of hardness value among the specimens was reduced. The increase in hardness after post-firing heat treatment was caused by grain interior precipitation in the matrix. The softening heat treatment did not affect the increase in hardness by post-firing heat treatment. The precipitated phase from the parent Pd-Ag-Au-rich ${\alpha}$ phase with face-centered cubic structure by post-firing heat treatment was $Pd_3$(Sn, In) phase with face-centered tetragonal structure, which has lattice parameters of $a_{200}=4.0907{\AA}$, $c_{002}=3.745{\AA}$. From above results, appropriate post-firing heat treatment in order to support the hardness of Pd-Ag-Au metal substructure was expected to bring positive effects to durability of the prosthesis.

  • To clarify the influence of precipitation microstructure and inclusion on the monotonic tensile fracture behaviors in 2090 alloy aged at $180^{\circ}C$, the detailed measurement of hardness, tensile strength, elongation and the observation of scanning electron micrography, transmision electron micrography have been carried out. The transgranular shear ductile fracture has been observed in specimen quenched after solution treatment at $500^{\circ}C$ for 45min. While the under-aged specimen was fractured in both transgranular shear ductile and intergranular fracture mode, the fracture mode of peak-aged and over-aged alloy was predominantly intergranular fracture. The fracture behavior of each ageing condition was influenced by the change of precipitation microstructural features. In the case of peak-aged and over-aged alloys, the coarse and heterogeneous slip band caused by both shearable nature of the ${\delta}^{\prime}(Al_3Li)$ precipitates and PFZ along the high angle grain boundary aid the localization of deformation, resulting in low energy intergranular fracture. It was also estimated that the fractured T-type intermetallic phases (inclusion) and the equilibrium ${\delta}$(AlLi) phases which were formed at grain boundaries palyed an important role in promoting intergranular fracture mode.

  • Contact tips are required to have a higher resistance to wear and thus to have an extended life time under the advanced GMAW welding process. Several requirements have been specified and employed by domestic industries for selecting their tips for such a purpose. However no attempt has been made to justify their requirements based on the experimental data of wear resistance or life time of contact tips. In this study, five different contact tips with three different compositions were employed for actual GMA welding up to 4 hours and were evaluated their wear resistance by measuring in every one hour the area of enlarged hole at the exit side. Experimental results clearly showed that the Cr-containing tips strengthened by precipitation hardening have much better resistance to wear than those made by work hardening. It was further noticed that Cr is an excellent alloying element for improving the wear resistance of contact tips only when it is in an properly aged condition. Initial hardness may play some role in the early stage of wear but not in the later stage of welding because the microstructure of tip changes significantly by the prolonged exposure to welding arc heat. Based on these results, critical review has been made on the current requirements employed by domestic industries. Of importance is that a new guideline has been confirmed to be more reasonable.

  • At elevated temperature, very complex precipitations occur in STS316. To investigate the effect of the precipitation on mechanical properties in SIS316, tensile tests and fatigue crack growth tests were carried out at $650^{\circ}C$ using artificially degraded materials. The material degradation was simulated by aging for up to 20000 hrs. at $750^{\circ}C$, which is equal to 179000hrs (about 20yrs) of service life at $650^{\circ}C$, after conducting solution treatment for 20 min. at $11300^{\circ}C$. The result of the hardness test and the tensile test showed that both properties are closely related to the mean free distance of carbides. Also, from the results of fracture tests at $650^{\circ}C$, ${\triangle}K_{th}$, after values were found to decrease as aging time and microstructure, as the volume fraction of $\sigma$ phase increased.
