Characteristics of precipitation in Seoul have been examined by using long-term observational data. Precipitation records from modern rain gauges were used for 1908-1996, together with the traditional Korean rain gauge (called Chukwookee) observations for 1777-1907. A linear trend analysis of seasonal total rainfall shows no significant trends over the last 200 years A wavelet transform analysis was performed to figure out the transient variations of precipitation.

Characterizing the performance of precipitation (hereafter PRE) products in estimating the uncertainties in daily PRE in the era of global warming is of great value to the ecosystem's sustainability and human survival. This study intercompares the performance of different PRE products (gauge-based, satellite and reanalysis) sourced from the Frequent Rainfall Observations on GridS (FROGS) database over diverse climate zones in Africa and identifies regions where they depict minimal uncertainties in order to build optimal maps as a guide for different climate users. This is achieved by utilizing various techniques, including the triple collection (TC) approach, to assess the capabilities and limitations of different PRE products over nine climatic zones over the continent. For daily scale analysis, the uncertainties in light PRE (0.1 5mm/day) are prevalent over most regions in Africa during the study duration (2001-2016). Estimating the occurrence of extreme PRE events based on daily PRE 90th percentile suggests that extreme PRE is mainly detected over central Africa (CAF) region and some coastal regions of west Africa (WAF) where the majority of uncorrected satellite products show good agreement. The detection of PRE days and non-PRE days based on categorical statistics suggests that a perfect POD/FAR score is unattainable irrespective of the product type. Daily PRE uncertainties determined based on quantitative metrics show that consistent, satisfactory performance is demonstrated by the IMERG products (uncorrected), ARCv2, CHIRPSv2, 3B42v7.0 and PERSIANN_CDRv1r1 (corrected), and GPCC, CPC_v1.0, and REGEN_ALL (gauge) during the study period. The optimal maps that show the classification of products in regions where they depict reliable performance can be recommended for various usage for different stakeholders.

The demand for rainfall data in gridded digital formats has increased in recent years due to the close linkage between hydrological models and decision support systems using the geographic information system. One of the most widely used tools for digital rainfall mapping is the PRISM (parameter-elevation regressions on independent slopes model) which uses point data (rain gauge stations), a digital elevation model (DEM), and other spatial datasets to generate repeatable estimates of monthly and annual precipitation. In the PRISM, rain gauge stations are assigned with weights that account for other climatically important factors besides elevation, and aspects and the topographic exposure are simulated by dividing the terrain into topographic facets. The size of facet or grid cell resolution is determined by the density of rain gauge stations and a $5{\times}5km$ grid cell is considered as the lowest limit under the situation in Korea. The PRISM algorithms using a 270m DEM for South Korea were implemented in a script language environment (Python) and relevant weights for each 270m grid cell were derived from the monthly data from 432 official rain gauge stations. Weighted monthly precipitation data from at least 5 nearby stations for each grid cell were regressed to the elevation and the selected linear regression equations with the 270m DEM were used to generate a digital precipitation map of South Korea at 270m resolution. Among 1.25 million grid cells, precipitation estimates at 166 cells, where the measurements were made by the Korea Water Corporation rain gauge network, were extracted and the monthly estimation errors were evaluated. An average of 10% reduction in the root mean square error (RMSE) was found for any months with more than 100mm monthly precipitation compared to the RMSE associated with the original 5km PRISM estimates. This modified PRISM may be used for rainfall mapping in rainy season (May to September) at much higher spatial resolution than the original PRISM without losing the data accuracy.
Precipitation variability around King Sejong Station related with E1 $Ni\~{n}o$/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is evaluated using the gauge-based monthly data of its neighboring stations. Though three Ant-arctic Stations of King Sejong (Korea), Frei (Chile), and Artigas (Uruguay) are all closely located within 10 km, their precipitation data show mostly insignificant positive or rather negative correlations among them in the annual, seasonal and monthly precipitation. This result indicates that there are locally large variations in the distribution of precipitation around King Sejong Station. The monthly data of Frei Station for 31 years (1970-2000) are analyzed for examining the ENSO signal in precipitation because of its longer precipitation record compared to other two stations. From the analysis of seasonal precipitation, it is seen that there is a tendency of less precipitation than the average during E1 $Ni\~{n}o$ events. This dryness is more distinct in fall to spring seasons, in which the precipitation decreases down to about 30% of seasonal mean precipitation. However, the precipitation signal related with La $Ni\~{n}a$ events is not significant. From the analysis of monthly precipitation, it is found that there is a strong negative correlation during 1980s and in the late 1990s, and a weak positive correlation in the early 1990s between normalized monthly precipitation at Frei Station and Sea Surface Temperature (SST) anomalies in the $Ni\~{n}o$ 3.4 region. However, this relation may be not applied over the region around King Sejong Station, but at only one station, Frei.

Accurate characterization of terrestrial precipitation variation from high spatial resolution satellite sensors is beneficial for urban hydrology and microscale agriculture modeling, as well as natural disasters (e.g., urban flooding) early warning. However, the widely-used top-down approach for precipitation retrieval from microwave satellites is limited in several hydrological and agricultural applications due to their coarse spatial resolution. In this research, we aim to apply a novel bottom-up method, the parameterized SM2RAIN, where precipitation can be estimated from soil moisture signals based on an inversion of water balance model, to generate high spatial resolution terrestrial precipitation estimates at 0.01º grid (roughly 1-km) from the C-band SAR Sentinel-1. This product was then tested against a common reanalysis-based precipitation data and a domestic rain gauge network from the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA) over central South Korea, since a clear difference between climatic types (coasts and mainlands) and land covers (croplands and mixed forests) was reported in this area. The results showed that seasonal precipitation variability strongly affected the SM2RAIN performances, and the product derived from separated parameters (rainy and non-rainy seasons) outperformed that estimated considering the entire year. In addition, the product retrieved over the mainland mixed forest region showed slightly superior performance compared to that over the coastal cropland region, suggesting that the 6-day time resolution of S1 data is suitable for capturing the stable precipitation pattern in mainland mixed forests rather than the highly variable precipitation pattern in coastal croplands. Future studies suggest comparing this product to the traditional top-down products, as well as evaluating their integration for enhancing high spatial resolution precipitation over entire South Korea.
Among various input data to hydrologic models, rainfall measurements arguably have the most critical influence on the performance of hydrologic model. Traditionally, hydrologic models have relied on point gauge measurements to provide the area-averaged rainfall information. However, rainfall estimates from gauges become inadequate due to their poor representation of areal rainfall, especially in situations with sparse gauge network. Alternatively, radar that covers much larger areas has become an attractive instrument for providing area- averaged precipitation information. Despite of the limitation of the QPE(Quantitative Precipitation Estimation) using radar, we can get the better information of spatial variability of rainfall fields. Also, rain-gauges give us the better quantitative information of rainfall field. Therefore, in this study, we developed improved methodologies tu estimate rainfall fields using an ordinary cokriging technique which optimally merges radar reflectivity data into rain-gauges data.
Precipitation is closely related to various hydrometeorological phenomena, such as runoff and evapotranspiration. In Korean Peninsula, observing rainfall intensity using weather radar and rain gauge network is dominating due to their accurate, intuitive and precise detecting power. However, since these methods are not suitable at ungauged regions, rainfall detection using satellite is required. Satellite-based rainfall data has coarse spatial resolution (10 km, 25 km), and has a limited range of usage due to its reliability of data. The aim of this study is to obtain finer scale precipitation. Especially, to make the applicability of satellite higher at ungauged regions, 10 km satellite-based rainfall data was downscaled to 1 km data using MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) based cloud property. Downscaled precipitation was verified in urban region, which has complex topographical and environmental characteristics. Correlation coefficient was similar in summer (+0), decreased in spring (-0.08) and autumn (-0.01), and increased in winter (+0.04) season compared to Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) based precipitation. Downscaling without calibration using in situ data could be useful in areas where rain gauge system is not sufficient or ground observations are rarely available.

The Amazon River basin is one of the largest basins in the world, and its ecosystem is vital for biodiversity, hydrology, and climate regulation. Thus, understanding the hydrometeorological process is essential to the maintenance of the Amazon River basin. However, it is still tricky to monitor the Amazon River basin because of its size and the low density of the monitoring gauge network. To solve those issues, remote sensing products have been largely used. Yet, those products have some limitations. Therefore, this study aims to do bias corrections to improve the accuracy of Satellite Precipitation Products (SPPs) in the Amazon River basin. We use 331 rainfall stations for the observed data and two daily satellite precipitation gridded datasets (CHIRPS, TRMM). Due to the limitation of the observed data, the period of analysis was set from 1st January 1990 to 31st December 2010. The observed data were interpolated to have the same resolution as the SPPs data using the IDW method. For bias correction, we use convolution neural networks (CNN) combined with an autoencoder architecture (ConvAE). To evaluate the bias correction performance, we used some statistical indicators such as NSE, RMSE, and MAD. Hence, those results can increase the quality of precipitation data in the Amazon River basin, improving its monitoring and management.

Accurate quantitative precipitation estimation plays an important role in hydrological modelling and prediction. Instantaneous quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) by utilizing the weather radar data is a great applicability for operational hydrology in a catchment. Previously, regression technique performed between reflectivity (Z) and rain intensity (R) is used commonly to obtain radar QPEs. A novel, recent approaching method which might be applied in hydrological area for QPE is Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) Networks. LSTM networks is a development and evolution of Recurrent Neuron Networks (RNNs) method that overcomes the limited memory capacity of RNNs and allows learning of long-term input-output dependencies. The advantages of LSTM compare to RNN technique is proven by previous works. In this study, LSTM networks is used to estimate the quantitative precipitation from weather radar for an urban catchment in South Korea. Radar information and rain-gauge data are used to evaluate and verify the estimation. The estimation results figure out that LSTM approaching method shows the accuracy and outperformance compared to Z-R relationship method. This study gives us the high potential of LSTM and its applications in urban hydrology.

The possible experimental time for cloud seeding was analyzed in South Korea. Rain gauge and radar precipitation data collected from September 2017 to August 2022 in from the three main target stations of cloud seeding experimentation (Daegwallyeong, Seoul, and Boryeong) were analyzed. In this study, the assumption that rainfall and cloud enhancement originating from the atmospheric updraft is a necessary condition for the cloud seeding experiment was applied. First, monthly and seasonal means of the precipitation duration and frequency were analyzed and cloud seeding experiments performed in the past were also reanalyzed. Results of analysis indicated that the experiments were possible during a monthly average of 7,025 minutes (117 times) in Daegwallyeong, 4,849 minutes (81 times) in Seoul, and 5,558 minutes (93 times) in Boryeong, if experimental limitations such as the insufficient availability of aircraft is not considered. The seasonal average results showed that the possible experimental time is the highest in summer at all three stations, which seems to be owing to the highest precipitable water in this period. Using the radar-converted precipitation data, the cloud seeding experiments were shown to be possible for 970-1,406 hours (11-16%) per year in these three regions in South Korea. This long possible experimental time suggests that longer duration, more than the previous period of 1 hour, cloud seeding experiments are available, and can contribute to achieving a large accumulated amount of enhanced rainfall.
