Since 1970s, rapid industrialization brought urbanization nationwide. In this paper, precipitation changes have been studied for Seoul and other 6 major cities using 31 years of precipitation data from 1973 to 2003. In addition, to consider the other global climatic impacts including El Nino events, precipitation change comparisons have been made between urban and rural areas. Thus, statistical analysis methods have been adopted for annual precipitation, summer precipitation, 1 hour annual maxima series, and 24 hour annual maxima series for both urban and rural areas. The result yields that annual and summer precipitation have been increased in urban areas compare to rural areas.

Precipitation is an important component for hydrological and water control study. In general, AWS data provides more accurate but low dense information for precipitation while radar data gives less accurate but high dense information. The objective of this study is to construct adjusted precipitation field based on hierarchical spatial model combining radar data and AWS data. Here, we consider a Bayesian hierarchical model with spatial structure for hourly accumulated precipitation. In addition, we also consider a redistribution of hourly precipitation to 2.5 minute precipitation. Through real data analysis, it has been shown that the proposed approach provides more reasonable precipitation field.

The techniques to calculate the probability precipitation for the design of hydrological projects can be determined by the point frequency analysis and the regional frequency analysis. Probability precipitation usually calculated by point frequency analysis using rainfall data that is observed in rainfall observatory which is situated in the basin. Therefore, Probability precipitation through point frequency analysis need observed rainfall data for enough periods. But, lacking precipitation data can be calculated to wrong parameters. Consequently, the regional frequency analysis can supplement the lacking precipitation data. Therefore, the regional frequency analysis has weaknesses compared to point frequency analysis because of suppositions about probability distributions. In this paper, rainfall observatory in Korea did grouping by cluster analysis using position of timely precipitation observatory and characteristic time rainfall. Discordancy and heterogeneity measures verified the grouping precipitation observatory by the cluster analysis. So, there divided rainfall observatory in Korea to 6 areas, and the regional frequency analysis applies index-flood techniques and L-moment techniques. Also, the probability precipitation was calculated by the regional frequency analysis using variable kernel density function. At the results, the regional frequency analysis of the variable kernel function can utilize for decision difficulty of suitable probability distribution in other methods.
This study was carried out to investigate the percentage of the net precipitation in Korean Pine(Pious koraiensis S. et Z.) stand separated by monthly, annually, the amount of rainfall and distance away from stem, at University of Sangji, Wonju, Kangwon province, during the period from April 1993 to October 1996. The average percentage of net precipitation showed 55.7% of the total precipitation, the minimum percentage of net precipitation was 45.7% in May and the maximum percentage was 62.9% in July. The average percentage of net precipitation at 0.3m far away from the stem showed 45.9% of the total precipitation and showed 60.3% at 0.6m distance. The average percentage of net precipitation within precipitation of 10mm and less showed 37.5% of tatoal precipitation and showed 70.9% within precipitation of 100mm and over. The relationship between percentage of through-fall and total precipitation were highly significant. It was estimated to be $Y_{(%)}=12.35LnX_{(mm)}+9.45$($R^2=0.735^{(**)}$). The relationship between stemflow and rainfall was estimated to be $Y_{({\ell})}=0.27X_{(mm)}-1.83$($R^2=0.921^{(**)}$). The relationship between percentage of net precipitation and total precipitation was estimated to be $Y_{(%)}=13.79LnX_{(mm)}+4.56$($R^2=0.946^{(**)}$) with significance at 1% level.

In this study, the regional factors in Gangwondo were used to analysis the relationship between point precipitation and areal precipitation. The most province area in Gangwondo is consist of mountainous terrain. At the east part of the Taebaek Mountains, the slope is very steep and the coastal plains don't exist. At the west part of the Taebaek Mountains, the slope is mild, there are many rivers, such as South Han-river and North Han-river, and the regions are very complex terrain. The data of 66 stations in Gangwondo and the PRISM (Parameter-elevation Regression on Indepedent Slope Model) were used to estimate the spatial distribution of precipitation. According to the topographic conditions, such as elevation and slope, and the regional conditions, such as Youngdong and Youngseo, the spatial distribution of precipitation is well shown. At the results of cross-validation, the RRBIAS and the RRMSE are under 0.1 and therefore the analysis of the PRISM are well conducted. Consequently the PRISM in this study is a appropriate method to estimate the spatial distribution of precipitation in Gangwondo.

Typhoons occurred in the tropical Pacific region, these might be affected the Korea moving toward north. The strong winds and the heavy rains by the typhoons caused a natural disaster in Korea. In the research, the heavy rainfall events based on typhoons were evaluated quantitative through various statistical techniques. First, probability precipitation and typhoon probability precipitation were compared using frequency analysis. Second, EST probability precipitation was calculated by Empirical Simulation Techniques (EST). Third, NL probability precipitation was estimated by coupled Nonparametric monte carlo simulation and Locally weighted polynomial regression. At the analysis results, the typhoons can be effected Gangneung and Mokpo stations more than other stations. Conversely, the typhoons can be effected Seoul and Inchen stations less than other stations. Also, EST and NL probability precipitation were estimated by the long-term simulation using observed data. Consequently, major hydrologic structures and regions where received the big typhoons impact should be review necessary. Also, EST and NL techniques can be used for climate change by the global warming. Because, these techniques used the relationship between the heavy rainfall events and the typhoons characteristics.

An estimation of reliable probability precipitation is one of the most important processes for reasonable hydrologic structure design. A probability precipitation has been calculated by frequency analysis using annual maximum rainfall series on the each duration among the observed rainfall data. Annual maximum rainfall series have abstracted on hourly rainfall data or daily rainfall data. So, there is necessary to proper conversion factor between the fixed and sliding durations. Therefore, in this study, conversion factors on the each duration between fixed and sliding durations have calculated using minutely data compared to hourly and daily data of 37 stations observed by Meteorological Administration in Korea. Also, regression equations were computed by regression analysis of conversion factors on the each duration. Consequently, conversion factors were used basis data for calculations of stable probability precipitation.

The occurrence causes of the extreme rainfall to happen in Korea can be distinguished with the typhoons and local downpours. The typhoon events attacked irregularly to induce the heavy rainfall, and the local downpour events mean a seasonal rain front and a local rainfall. Almost every year, the typhoons and local downpours that induced a heavy precipitation be generated extreme disasters like a flooding. Consequently, in this research, There were distinguished the causes of heavy rainfall events with the typhoons and the local downpours at Korea. Also, probability precipitation was computed according to the causes of the local downpour events. An evaluation of local downpours can be used for analysis of heavy rainfall event in short period like a flash flood. The methods of calculation of probability precipitation used the parametric frequency analysis and the Empirical Simulation Technique (EST). The correlation analysis was computed between annual maximum precipitation by local downpour events and sea surface temperature, moisture index for composition of input vectors. At the results of correlation analysis, there were revealed that the relations closely between annual maximum precipitation and sea surface temperature. Also, probability precipitation using EST are bigger than probability precipitation of frequency analysis on west-middle areas in Korea. Therefore, region of west-middle in Korea should prepare the extreme precipitation by local downpour events.
