Micellar enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) is a surfactant-based separation process and it can remove heavy metal ions from aqueous stream effectively. However, it is necessary to recover and reuse surfactants for economic feasibility because surfactant is expensive. Foam fractionation was investigated for both anionic and cationic surfactant recovery. Chelating agent such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was studied for the separation of heavy metals from surfactant solution. Anionic surfactants bound with heavy metals can be recovered by lowering pH (acidification). In this study, citric acid and imminodiacetic acid (IDA) were applied to release copper from sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micellar solution and compared with EDTA. Precipitation of copper by ferricynide and sodium sulfide were also investigated. As a result, ca. 100 % of copper was released from SDS micellar solution by 5 mM of EDTA and citric acid. And 3.3 mM of ferricyanide formed precipitate with 82.7 % of copper. 5 mM of IDA and sodium sulfide released or formed precipitate 82.5 % and 58.9 % of copper, respectively. Citric acid is harmless to environments and ferricyanide precipitates with Cu easily. Therefore, it is considered that citric acid and ferricyanide have competiveness over a famous chelating agent, EDTA, for the separation of Cu from SDS solution.
The ochreous precipitates, reddish brown and brownish yellow in color, are pre- cipitated in the stream bottom of acid mine drainage (AMD) in the Donghae coal mine area. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the reddish brown precipitate consists mainly of ferrihydrite with small amount of goethite, while the brownish yellow precipitate of schwertmannite. Thermal experiments show that ferrihydrite and schwertmannite partially convert to poorly-crystallized hematite at $400^{\circ}C$ and to well-crystallized hematite at $700^{\circ}C$.
In this study, the recently developed Al 2013 alloy was T8-tempered and, to improve the strength and corrosion-resistance, slight amounts of Zr of 0.2 wt% and 0.5 wt%, respectively, were added and the mechanical properties were analyzed. For microstructure and precipitate analysis, OM observation, XRD analysis, and TEM analysis were performed, and for the mechanical property analysis, hardness and tensile strength tests were done. Also, in order to determine the corrosion rate according to the Zr content, a potentiodynamic polarization test was performed and the properties were compared and analyzed. The size of the precipitate varied with the content of Zr and was finest at Zr content of 0.2 wt%; it grew larger at 0.5 wt%, at which point the hardness value accordingly showed the same trend. On the other hand, as calculated from the aspect of chemical bonding among atoms, it was confirmed that the tensile strength and the corrosion-resistance increased with the same trend.
In this study, we have for the first time applied increased surface area fractional precipitation in order to decrease the particle size of the anticancer agent paclitaxel from plant cell cultures. When compared with the case where no surface area increasing material was employed, the addition of ion exchange resin as a surface area increasing material resulted in a considerable decrease in the size of the paclitaxel precipitate. When ion exchange resin was used, the paclitaxel particles were four to five times smaller, having less than a 20 ${\mu}m$ radius, than those obtained in the absence of ion exchange resin. This is presumably because the growth of paclitaxel particles was impeded by the addition of ion exchange resin. The size of the paclitaxel precipitate also depended on the material used to increase the surface area, a result considered to be due to differences in the affinity between the particular ion exchange resin used and the paclitaxel particles. The yield of paclitaxel was significantly improved when ion exchange resin was used as a material to increase surface area. Paclitaxel, with a reduced particle size due to the addition of a surface area increasing material during the fractional precipitation process, is believed to be particularly useful for practical applications of the drug.
Various kinds of Mg-Zn-Ca base alloys were rapidly quenched via melt spinning process. The meltspun ternary and quaternary alloy ribbons were heat-treated, and then the effects of additional elements on age hardening behavior and phase change of precipitates were investigated using Vickers hardness tester, XRD, and TEM equipped with EDS system. In ternary alloys, age hardening was mostly due to the distribution of $Mg_6Ca_2Zn_3$ and $Mg_2Ca$. The stable phases of precipitates were varied according to the aging temperature and the alloy composition. With the increase of Ca content, $Mg_2Ca$ precipitates were detected more than $Mg_6Ca_2Zn_3$ precipitates. In quaternary alloys, the precipitates taken from Mg-Zn-Ca-Co were identified as new quaternary phase, whereas those taken from Mg-Zn-Ca-Zr as MgZnCa containing Zr. In general, the ternary alloy showed higher peak hardness and thermal stability than the quaternary considering the total amounts of the solutes. It implies that the structure of precipitate should be controlled to have the coherent interface with the Mg matrix.

The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of Ni on precipitate formation in a Ni added galvanizing bath, which has various Ni content from 0.03wt.% to 0.5wt.%. The addition of hi in the Ni containing galvanizing bath resulted in the formation of Al-Ni intermetallic compounds such as $Al_3$$Ni_2$ and $Al_2$Ni, which make up most of the top precipitates. At 0.07wt.%Ni, Al-Ni intermetallic compound formed sensitively with small amount of Al addition. By analysing the reaction thickness of galvanized steel, it was found that Ni addition in a Zn-0.18w1.%Al bath tended to suppress the formation of Fe-Zn intermetallic compounds but the formation of these compounds increased with increasing Ni concentration above 0.1wt.%.
In this paper it is reported that a comprehensive study of the crystal structure of the fine size S-phase ($Al_2CuMg$) precipitate in Al-Cu-Mg alloy by electron diffraction experiments. The experiments involve taking the selected area diffraction pattern for a S-phase particle, simulations of the pattern based on the kinematical diffraction theory and quantitative data collection from the zone axis diffraction patterns for the comparison with calculated diffraction intensity using both the kinematical and the dynamical diffraction theory. As a result, a good fitting model of the S-phase structure turns out to be the model reported early by X-ray methods (Perlitz & Westgren, 1943), not the new model determined by HRTEM methods (Radmilovic et al., 1999).
The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of reaction-precipitate from Coptidis Rhizoma and Glycyrrhizae Radix aqueous mixture(CGP) on the cytotoxicity. The effects of CGP on the growth of tumor cells, Balb/c 3T3 cell, mouse spleen cell and human lymphocyte were compared with those of berberine, glycyrrhizin and berberine glycyrrhizinate(BG), which were estimated by MTT colorimetric assay or cell counting. CGP, berberine and BG inhibited the growth of several tumor cells, such as Hep G2, A549, Raji, MCF-7, HeLa and KHOS-NP. Whereas, glycyrrhizin inhibited the growth of Raji and MCF-7, CGP did not affect on Balb/C 3T3 cells, mouse spleen cells and human lymphocyte at $10^{-6}{\sim}10^{-5}g/ml$. CGP increased the number of leukocyte in mice. This results indicate that CGP have the inhibitory action of the growth of human tumor cells, and the side effect of CGP is less than berberine and BG.
The microstructural evolution of Grade 91 tempered martensite ferritic steels heat treated at $760{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$ for two hours was investigated using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), energy disperse spectroscopy(EDS), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), and transmission electron microscopy(TEM); a microhardness tester was also employed, with a focus on the grain and precipitate evolution process as well as on the main hardening element. It was found that an evolution of tempered martensite to ferrite($760{\sim}850^{\circ}C$), and to fresh martensite($900{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$), occurred with the increase of temperature. Simultaneously, the parabolic evolution characteristics of the low angle grain boundary(LAGB) increased with the increase of the heating temperature(highest fraction of LAGB at $925^{\circ}C$), indicating grain recovery upon intercritical heating. The main precipitate, $M_{23}C_6$, was found to be coarsened slightly at $760{\sim}850^{\circ}C$; it then dissolved at $850{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$. Besides this, $M_3C$ cementite was formed at $900{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$. Finally, the experimental results show that the hardness of the steel depended largely on the matrix structure, rather than on the precipitates, with the fresh martensite showing the highest hardness value.
After aconitine-type alkaloids have been isolated from the crude drug "Buza" as the precipitate, they could be identified with colour test, UV/Vis. absorption wavelength, TLC. The presence of aconitine-type alkaloids are confirmed by the reaction with the Reineke ion, $[Cr(NH_3)_2(SCN)_4]^{1+}$, and TCR ion, $[Co(SCN)4]^{2-}$, to produce the white precipitate or one of the containing from blue to yellowish blue. It is based on the formation of complex compounds by aconitine-type alkaloids with Reineke and TCR reagent. The method has been found to be simple, convenient and suitable for routine identification of aconitine-type alkaloids, related basic compounds, the crude drug "Buza" processed from the roots of certain Aconitum spp. plants(Ranunculaceae).
