  • The expansion of exponential law as the law of calculation of integer numbers can be a good material for the students to experience an extended configuration which is based on an algebraic principle of the performance of equivalent forms. While current textbooks described that exponential law can be expanded from natural number to integer, rational number and real number, most teachers force students to accept intuitively that the exponential law is valid although exponent is expanded into real number. However most teachers overlook explaining the value of exponent of rational number or exponent of irrational number so most students have a lot of questions whether this value is a rational number or a irrational number. Related to students' questions, most teacher said that it is out of the current curriculum and students will learn it after going to college instead of detailed answers. In this paper, we will present several examples and the values about irrational exponents of a positive rational and irrational exponents of a positive irrational number, and study the recognition and fallacy of would-be teachers about the cases of irrational exponents of a positive rational and irrational exponents of a positive irrational number at the expansion of exponential law.

  • This study explores classes for pre-service mathematics teachers. The purpose of this study is to examine the differences between 'non-face-to-face' classes & 'face-to-face' classes, as well as the differences in learning outcomes between these two methods. A Professors' Learning Group was formed to effectively carry out this study. Through this learning group, we shared how to plan and operate the lecture. The subjects of this study are 'non-face-to-face calculus courses & face-to-face calculus courses' and 'non-face mathematics education theory courses & face-to-face mathematics education theory courses." Specifically, in these two pairs of courses, we analyze the differences in course management and the differences in the outcomes of students' assessments. Non-face-to-face classes were planned, developed, implemented and evaluated based on the 'non-face class design model.' The results of this study are as follows: First, we explored the differences between 'non-face-to-face classes/mixed classes' and 'face-to-face classes.' Second, the achievement results in calculus courses were higher in face-to-face classes than in non-face classes. Third, the results of achievements in mathematics education theory courses were higher in mixed classes than in face-to-face classes. Through the results of this study, we hope that the non-face-to-face class capabilities can be improved in pre-service mathematics teacher training.

  • The purpose of the study is to reflect on 'myself' as a teacher educator of college of education in depth and to improve my instruction through self-study with three critical collaborators. 17 pre-service science teachers and I have participated in this study of a teacher educator's course since March 2016 after the preliminary practice in 2015. The video recorded the course for 11 weeks with about 40 hours of lessons. The data source also included teacher educator's reflective journals, lecture evaluations, online boards and so on. Questionnaires were distributed and answered both at the beginning and at the end of the course and pre-service teachers wrote their reflective journals. Four of them were in the focus group interviews. During the course, the weekly group meeting of critical collaborators analyzed the emerging issues based on the lesson clips and teacher educator's reflective journals with discussion for the course innovation. Four phases were revealed in the process and for the purpose of the course such as exploration, conflicts, challenges, and changes. The results showed that first, we identified tensions among the teacher educator's multiple identities as a lecturer, a faculty member, and a researcher. Second, there were differences between goals of teacher educator and pre-service teachers in the course, and this obstructed the success of the course sometimes. Third, these practices led to explore balanced alternative views and interpretations of the problem by critical views and to expand and improve our teaching practice and thinking. In addition, the self-study with critical collaborators helped to bring conflicts and issues below my practice to light for collaborative reflection and it gave a chance to understand ourselves as teacher educators in different ways.

  • This study is to establish the items on instructional evaluation based on the teacher's practical knowledge in mathematics educations. Namely, this study deals with the items on how pre-service or in-service teachers reflect and revise their own or peer's class. To accomplish this, first of all the items on instructional evaluation was developed by researchers of this study on the basis of the results of two previous study. One is the literature of Elbaz(1981) and the other is the literature of Hwang(2013). Elbaz(1981) defined the definition of practical knowledge and five sub-domains of the practical knowledge. On the other hand, Hwang(2013) defined the teacher knowledge in mathematics education and four sub-domains of the teacher knowledge. According to these four domains, Hwang(2013) developed the items on the instructional evaluation in mathematics class. From now on, based on these two study, this study was to develop the items on the instructional evaluation involving the practical knowledge. Futhermore, the final and ideal items on the instruction would be established through the reflection and comments of professionals such as mathematics teachers, professors, and researchers.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the brain activities by 4-types of Generating Process of Scientific Emotion (GPSE) in the hypothesis-generating biological phenomena by using fMRI. Four-types of GPSE were involved in the Basic Generating Process (BGP), Retrospective Generating Process (RGP), Cognitive Generating Process (CGP) and Attributive Generating Process (AGP). For this study, we made an experimental design capable of validating the 4-types of generating process (e.g. BGP, RGP, CGP and AGP), and then measured BOLD signals of 10 pre-service teachers' brain activities by 3.0T fMRI system. Subjects were 10 healthy females majoring in biology education. As a result, there were clear differences among 4-types of GPSE. Brain areas activated by BGP were at right occipital lobe (BA 17), at left thalamus and left parahippocampal gyrus, while in the case of RGP, at left superior parietal lobe (BA 8, 9), at left pulvinar and left globus pallidus were activated. Brain areas activated by CGP were the right posterior cingulate and left medial frontal gyrus (BA 6). In the case of AGP, the most distinctively activated brain areas were the right medial frontal gyrus (BA 8) and left inferior parietal lobule (BA 40). These results would mean that each of the 4-types of GPSE has a specific neural networks in the brain, respectively. Furthermore, it would provide the basis of brain-based learning in science education.

  • This study was to investigate novice teachers' Specialized Content Knowledge for Teaching in High School Calculus Lessons. The lessons of two novice teachers in Kyunggi Do were observed from July, 2011 to Feb. 2012. All observed lessons were audeotaped and transcribed into word files. Their calculus lessons were analyzed into three kinds of knowledge consisting of SCKT. Their SCKT just copied the contents of the textbook and other additional SCKT were not found for teaching. Even though students asked a question that they did not understand, the teacher just repeated the previous contents that already he used. But this study included possible contents of SCKT within the areas these teachers covered so that teachers in school may use for teaching of Calculus. The novice teacher do not have sufficient experience, the program of the college of education and the contents of the teacher certificate-examination should include multi-dimensional approaches in SCKT to pre-service teachers in order to raise better specialized teachers in mathematics.

  • Mathematics Teaching Efficacy Beliefs Inventory (MTEBI) was translated into Korean and conducted among Korean pre-service mathematics teachers. The Korean-translated MTEBI consists of two subscales with 16 items. Personal Mathematics Teaching Efficacy (PMTE) subscale has 10 items and Mathematics Teaching Outcome Expectancy (MTOE) subscale has 6 items. The purpose of this study is to investigate the internal reliability and the construct validity of the Korean-translated MTEBI. The Cronbach alpha coefficient of Korean-translated MTEBI and its two subscales are respectively .87, .83, and .74 which imply that the instrument is reliable. The construct validity was achieved by performing factor analysis. Principal component solution with varimax rotation for the Korean-translated MTEBI was used in factor analysis and thus the best fit simple structure was obtained by two factors which correspond to the self-efficacy dimension and the outcome expectancy dimension of Bandura's self-efficacy theory.
