This study was carried out in order to elucidate effects of types of binder used in pre-coated layer on optical properties and printability of top-coated layer. Coated papers with four different types of SB latex were prepared. Tg, particle size and gel contents of latices were of different. Optical properties and printability of coated paper including print mottle were evaluated. It was confirmed that properties of pre-coated layer distinctively affected final properties of top-coated layer. Tg was found to be the most influencing factor on the print mottle of coated paper: the SB latex with lower Tg and higher particle size resulted in a superior print mottle. These results indicate that final printability and properties of top-coated layer can be controlled by adjusting pre-coated layer.
This study was carried out in order to investigate the effect of pre-coating layer on top-coating layer. The coated paper with five different formulations were prepared. The properties of coated paper were measured and correlation between pre and top-coated layer was evaluated. Paper gloss was increased with addition of clay and GCC that has smaller particle size. Roughness was decreased with using smaller particle GCC, clay and talc. The highest thickness was obtained with talc. Brightness and whiteness of pre-coated layer were affected to top-coated layer. GCC 60 shows the highest and ununiform water adsorption during 1sec. The adsorption was higher with increasing coated weight. Talc shows the excellent water adsorption properties due to its wettability. These results indicate that final printability and properties of top coating layer can be controlled with adjusting pre-coating layer.
Pre-coated sheet materials are a cost-effective and environmentally attractive alternative to conventional sheet materials coated after forming. At present but the high scratch sensitivity of coating used for pre-coated metal sheet is a major limitation to use of these materials. Because of high scratch sensitivity, products made by pre-coated metal sheet are not formed by conventional design method. This study has been performed to investigate scratch characteristic of non-vinyl pre-coated metal (PCM) sheet. Using the simple U-bending test equipment, three non-vinyls PCM's were tested. This paper provides the results of bending tests showing the influence of sheet surface texture, tool material and process conditions. It was found that the influence of punch, die clearance and tool material had an effect upon the scratch characteristic.
This study was carried out in order to investigate the effect of pigment properties in a pre-coating layer on the characteristics of a top-coating layer and the print mottle of the coated paper. Five different pigments were applied for this study as raw materials for the pre-coating layer. The properties and print mottle of the coated paper samples were evaluated according to the coating color formulation. Type of pigments appliied in a pre-coating layer was one of the most important factor to control the properties of pre and top coating layer. Surface properties of pre and top coated paper were improved by blending GCC which had smaller particle size, with clay. Properties of a top-coating layer was affected by the pigment properties used in the pre-coating layer. It was found that print mottle of coated paper can be improved by replacing part of GCC with smaller particle size GCC or clay in pre-coating layer.
This study was carried out in order to investigate the effect of binder properties in pre-coating layer on the characteristics of top-coating layer and print mottle of coated paper. Four different latices were used as a binder in pre-coating layer, and coating color prepared with a same formulation was applied for top-coating. The properties and print mottle of coated paper were evaluated. It was found that glass transition temperature (Tg) was the important factor to control the properties of pre- and top-coating layer. PPS roughness of coated paper was decreased and paper gloss was increased with applying binder which has lower Tg. Properties of top-coating layer were affected by the binder used in pre-coating layer. Print mottle of coated paper was improved with using binder which has lower Tg in pre-coating layer. These results indicate that final printability and properties of top-coating layer can be improved with using suitable binder in pre-coating layer.
Part of SB latex in pre-coating color was substituted with newly developed starch-based bio-binder in order to investigate the effect of starch-based bio-binder in pre-coating color on the properties of coating color and coated paper. Smoothness and gloss of coated paper were decreased with the increase of bio-binder substitution ratio. Brightness and whiteness did not show the significant changes, but stiffness was improved with bio-binder. Ink set-off, dry-pick and wet pick were decreased with the increase of bio-binder substitution ratio. In general, when all SB latex is substituted with bio-binder, ink set-off, dry- and wet-pick were deteriorated. However, it was found that if the bio-binder substitution ratio is controlled below 50%, similar qualities with coated paper manufactured by the use of SB latex binder can be obtained.
This study was carried out to evaluate whether EVAc, acryl latex and biobinder could substitute the part of SB latex for pre-coating color formula or not. Different coating colors prepared through the substitution of 30% SB latex with EVAc, acryl latex, and biobinder were applied for pre-coating layer. 100% SB latex is used as a binder for top coating color. The optical properties, gloss, roughness, stiffness, dry- and wet-pick strength were measured. There were no significant differences in the brightness, whiteness, opacity, roughness, ink set-off and gloss of paper coated with 5 different coating colors. However the stiffness, dry- and wet-pick strength were somewhat lower than those of conventional coating color which 100% SB latex was used as a binder. Although the part of SB latex could be substituted with EVAc, acryl latex and biobinder without sacrificing the qualities of coated paper. Further researches on the improvement of stiffness, dry- and wet-pick strength, and the optimization of rheology of coating color in order to improve the qualities of coated paper are strongly recommended.
This study has been performed to investigate formability of non-vinyl PCM(pre-coated metal)sheet. First, physical test of PCM sheets were tested to evaluate finish coating characteristic of PCM. And then, test equipment was made for friction test and three non-vinyl PCM sheets were tested by straight pulling method. This paper provides the results of the friction tests showing the influence of sheet surface texture and process conditions. It was found that the influence of contact pressure and speed had an effect upon the level of friction. Also using tests, the scratch resistance of a series of polyester coating has been investigated. This investigation aims to clarify the process conditions that prevent the scratch of PCM to form the good electrical appliances such as microwave oven, air conditioner and refrigerator etc.
The quantitative analysis of SB latex contents in coating color and coated paper was investigated with FT/Raman spectroscopy. From the measured FT/IR and FT/Ramon spectra, the peaks of coating color were compared with those of each compoents . Calibration curves were obtained by the area of latex peaks and PLS method of QuantIR program. The relation of predicted values in PLS method and actual values in coating mixtures and coating layer was examined. The components of coating layer in coated paper were investigated by EDS , X-mapping and SEM, The contents of latex in z-direction were calculated in the coating layer of unknown coated paper. The latex concentration measurements of Top layer and Pre layer in double coated paper show that each layer has different value. In single coated paper, it is clear that the latex concentration is highest at the surface and decreases with an increase of depth. From those results it is indicated that the latex migrates to the coated surface. The result of this study may be applied to the binder migration study and the quality control in paper mill.
This paper summarizes the results of a series of numerical evaluations (Lee et al., 2004, 2005) on the performance of pre-cracked reinforced concrete (RC) beams coated with polymeric composites. It was intended to numerically show the superior characteristics of the polymeric composites for enhancing the strength and ductility of existing concrete structures. Further, the predicted load-carrying and energy absorbing capacities of the beams were compared with previous experiments to verify the predictive capability of implemented computational model.
