  • The dynamic cast operation allows flexibility in the design and use of data management facilities in object-oriented programs. Dynamic cast has an important role in the implementation of the Data Management Services (DMS) of the Mission Data System Project (MDS), the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's experimental work for providing a state-based and goal-oriented unified architecture for testing and development of mission software. DMS is responsible for the storage and transport of control and scientific data in a remote autonomous spacecraft. Like similar operators in other languages, the C++ dynamic cast operator does not provide the timing guarantees needed for hard real-time embedded systems. In a recent study, Gibbs and Stroustrup (G&S) devised a dynamic cast implementation strategy that guarantees fast constant-time performance. This paper presents the definition and application of a cosimulation framework to formally verify and evaluate the G&S fast dynamic casting scheme and its applicability in the Mission Data System DMS application. We describe the systematic process of model-based simulation and analysis that has led to performance improvement of the G&S algorithm's heuristics by about a factor of 2. In this work we introduce and apply a library for extracting semantic information from C++ source code that helps us deliver a practical and verifiable implementation of the fast dynamic casting algorithm.

  • In this paper, it is intended to introduce a method to solve multi-objective optimization problems and to evaluate its performance. In order to verify the performance of this method it is applied for a vertical roller mill for Portland cement. A design process is defined with the compromise decision support problem concept and a design process consists of two steps: the design of experiments and mathematical programming. In this process, a designer decides an object that the objective function is going to pursuit and a non-linear optimization is performed composing objective constraints with practical constraints. In this method, response surfaces are used to model objectives (stress, deflection and weight) and the optimization is performed for each of the objectives while handling the remaining ones as constraints. The response surfaces are constructed using orthogonal polynomials, and orthogonal array as design of experiment, with analysis of variance for variable selection. In addition, it establishes the relative influence of the design variables in the objectives variability. The constrained optimization problems are solved using sequential quadratic programming. From the results, it is found that the method in this paper is a very effective and powerful for the multi-objective optimization of various practical design problems. It provides, moreover, a reference of design to judge the amount of excess or shortage from the final object.

  • Loop thermosyphon(LTS) has many good characteristics such as low thermal resistance, no power consumption, noiseless operation and small size. To investigate the overall performance of LTS, we have performed various experiments varying three parameters: input power of the heater, working fluid(water, ethanol, FC3283) and filling ratio of the working fluid. At a combination of these parameters, temperature measurements are made at many locations of the LTS. The temperature difference between the evaporator and the condenser is used to obtain the thermal resistance. In addition, flow visualization using a high speed camera is carried out. The thermal resistance is not constant. It is lower at higher input power, which is one of the distinct merits of LTS. Flow instabilities are frequently observed when changing the working fluid, the input power and the filling ratio. The results show that the LTS can be readily put into practical use. Future practical application in electronic cooling is recommended.

  • This paper addresses a RNG based scatternet topology formation, self-healing, and routing path optimization for small-scale distributed environment, which is called RNG-FHR(Scatternet Formation, self-Healing and self-Routing path optimization) algorithm. We evaluated the algorithm using ns-2 and extensible Bluetoothsimulator called blueware to show that RNG-FHR does not have superior performance, but is simpler and more practical than any other distributed algorithms from the point of depolying the network in the small-scale distributed dynamic environment due to the exchange of fewer messages and local control. As a result, we realized that even though RNG-FHR is unlikely to be possible for deploying in large-scale environment, it surely can be deployed for performance and practical implementation in small-scale environment.

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify the effectiveness of CPR training for nurses in the 6-sigma course. Method: The participants were nurses and doctors who worked in the medical center. For data analysis, the SPSS/PC14.0 program was used. Result: The total 11 categories of the primary problems were revealed on the recognition of carrying out CPR by nurses and doctors. After understanding the nurses' CPR knowledge and the practical ability, the survey showed 14.97 points and 67.12 points. After the education, the scores were increased from 14.87 to 23.25 in knowledge and from 67.12 to 93.43 in practical ability. The 6-sigma problem was ended as worked up the management plan and understood the changes over the management improving team. Conclusion: This study carries an emphasis on understanding of various CPR performance problems applied with 6-sigma in ward. In addition, improvement activities in relation to policy of hospitals suggest the high possibilities that the application of the improvement activities could be extended into the entire hospitals.

  • In this paper, we propose a practical implementation method of a soft bit decision expression for an R-QAM (Gray coded Rectangular Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) signal based on the Max-Log-MAP algorithm. The parameters of the soft decision expression for the practical implementation can be obtained with simple arithmetic functions associated with some deterministic parameters such as a received value, distances between symbols, and the order of modulation on a signal space. Also, we analyze the performance of an iterative decoding scheme for the QAM signal with I/Q phase unbalance. The unbalance results from the non-ideal characteristic of components such as a phase shifter between in-phase and quadrature paths for quadrature modulator/demondulator.

  • A control algorithm combining viscous and non-linear Reid damping mechanisms has been recently proposed by the authors to command active friction dampers. In this paper, friction dampers and the proposed algorithm are applied to control the seismic responses of a nonlinear 20-story building. Piezoelectric stack actuators are used to implement the control algorithm. The capacity of each damper is determined by the practical size of piezoelectric actuators and the availability of power supply. The saturation effect of the actuators on the building responses is investigated. To minimize the peak story drift ratio or floor acceleration of the building structure, a practical sequential procedure is developed to sub-optimally place the dampers on various floors. The effectiveness of active friction dampers and the efficiency of the proposed sequential procedure are verified by subjecting the building structure to four earthquakes of various intensities. The performance of 80 dampers and 137 dampers installed on the structure is evaluated according to 5 criteria. Numerical simulations indicated that the proposed control algorithm effectively reduces the seismic responses of the uncontrolled 20-story building, such as inelastic deformation. The sub-optimal placement of dampers based on peak acceleration outperforms that based on peak drift ratio for structures subjected to near-fault ground motions. Saturation of piezoelectric actuators has adverse effect on floor acceleration.

  • This paper proposes a novel test circuit for SiC transistors. On-state resistance under practical application conditions is an important characteristic for the device reliability and conduction efficiency of SiC transistors. In order to measure the on-state resistance in practical applications, high voltage is needed, and high current is also necessary to ignite performance for the devices. A soft-switching circuit based on synchronous buck topology is developed in this paper. To provide high-voltage and high-current stresses for the devices without additional spikes and oscillations, a resonant circuit has been introduced. Using the novel circuit technology, soft-switching can be successfully realized for all the switches. Furthermore, in order to achieve accurate measurement of on-state resistance under switching operations, an active clamp circuit is employed. Operation principle and design analysis of the circuit are discussed. The dynamic measurement method is illustrated in detail. Simulation and experiments were carried out to verify the feasibility of the circuit. A special test circuit has been developed and built. Experimental results confirm that the proposed circuit gives a good insight of the devices performance in real applications.

  • In this paper, the practical applications of the pseudolite are explained with the basic concept of the pseudolite. Many researches have been developed to improve the performance of the GPS. Most of those researches need the extra equipments. But without the extra equipments, the performance of GPS can be improved only with the change in the software in GPS system. In this paper, the pseudolite and the integrated navigation system including GPS as well as pseudolite only with navigation system for the demand of more precise navigation system are introduced. Also, the advantage of the pseudolite is confirmed by some simulations.
