Regulating Natural Lighting and Ventilation of Residential Buildings in Hong Kong Policy Implications for High-rise, High-density Housing Environments in South Korea

  • This study discusses the features of the lighting and ventilation regulations for residential buildings in Hong Kong. Given the compact built environment and public concerns about the environmental quality of housing, various lighting and ventilation regulations have been enacted in Hong Kong. The application of building regulations on the micro scale and incentive systems on the macro scale are present, and the governments' calls for more active participation of the private sector and use of the building environmental assessment tools were also noted. Unlike South Korea, however, Hong Kong was found to adopt more performance-based standards, consider the external factors of the lighting and ventilation conditions together with the indoor elements, and provide specific design guidelines. Notwithstanding the different climatic conditions and socio-political contexts of Hong Kong and South Korea, these findings provide some policy implications for the South Korean government in its efforts to achieve a healthy environment for high-rise, high-density housing. It is suggested that the South Korean government adopt more on-site measurement methods to reflect the environmental conditions accurately and broaden the scope and scale of the implementation of the lighting and ventilation regulations with more specific, practical planning and design guidelines.

A study on the rock fracture mechanism of cutter penetration and the assessment system of TBM tunnelling procedure

  • Excavation by TBM can be characterized by a rock-machine interaction during the cutting process on a small scale, but on a large scale the interaction between the rock mass and TBM becomes very significant. For the planning and evaluation of TBM tunnelling it needs to understand rock fracture mechanism by a cutter or cutters on a small scale, and to estimate penetration rate, advance rate and utilization on a large scale. In this study rock chipping mechanism due to cutter-penetration is analysed by numerical simulation, showing that rock chipping is mainly occurred by tensile failure. Also, through the analysis of factors that affect on TBM procedures in various assessment systems, it is determined that the key elements that should be considered in the planning and evaluation of TBM tunnelling are classified into rock properties, the geological structures and properties of rock mass, and the structural and functional specifications of the machine. The user-friendly assessment tool is developed, so that penetration rate, advance rate and TBM utilization are evaluated from various input data. The tool developed in this study can be applied to a practical TBM tunnelling by understanding TBM tunnelling procedures.

A Study on Potential Flood Damage Classification and characteristic analysis (시군별 홍수위험잠재능 유형화 및 특성분석)

  • Climate change is intensifying storms and floods around the world. Where nature has been destroyed by development, communities are at risk from these intensified climate patterns. This study was to suggest a methodology for estimating flood vulnerability using Potential Flood Damage(PFD) concept and classify city/county about Potential Flood Damage(PFD) using various typology techniques. To evaluate the PFD at a spatial resolutions of city/county units, the 20 representative evaluation indexing factors were carefully selected for the three categories such as damage target(FDT), damage potential(FDP) and prevention ability(FPA). The three flood vulnerability indices of FDT, FDP and FPA were applied for the 167 cities and counties in Korea for the pattern classification of potential flood damage. Potential Flood Damage(PFD) was classified by using grouping analysis, decision tree analysis, and cluster analysis, and characteristics of each type were analyzed. It is expected that the suggested PFD can be utilized as the useful flood vulnerability index for more rational and practical risk management plans against flood damage.

Indices Characterizing Road Network on Geo-Spatial Imagery as Transportation Network Analysis

  • In GIS-based network analysis, topological measure of network structure can be considered as one of important factors in the urban transportation analysis. Related to this measure, it is known that the connectivity indices such as alpha index and gamma index, which mean degree of network connectivity and complexity on a graph or a circuit, provide fundamental information. On the other hand, shimbel index is one of GIS-based spatial metrics to characterize degree of network concentration. However, the approach using these quantitative indices has not been widely used in practical level yet. In this study, an application program, in complied as extension, running on ArcView- GIS is implemented and demonstrated case examples using basic layers such as road centerline and administrative boundary. In this approach, geo-spatial imagery can be effectively used to actual applications to determine the analysis zone, which is composed of networks to extract these indices. As the results of the implementation and the case examples, it is notified that alpha and gamma indices as well as shimbel index can be used as referential data or auxiliary information for urban planning and transportation planning.

  • Oil and gas industry is a unique sector with complex activities, long supply chains and strict rules for the business. It is important to use enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems to address these challenges as it helps in simplifying operations, improving efficiency and facilitating evidence-based decision making. Nonetheless, successful integration of ERP systems in this industry involves careful planning, customization and alignment with specific business processes including regulatory requirements. Several critical factors, such as strong change management, support of top managers and training that works have been identified in the study. Amongst the hurdles are employee resistance towards the changes, data migration complications and integration with existing systems. Nonetheless, NOCL's ERP implementation resulted in significant improvements in operating efficiency, better data visibility and compliance management. It also led to a decrease in financial reporting timeframes, more accurate inventory tracking and improved decision-making capabilities. The study provides useful insights on how to optimize oil and gas sector ERP implementations; key among them is practical advice including strengthening change management strategies, prioritizing data security and collaborating with ERP vendors. The research highlights the importance of tailoring ERP solutions to specific industry needs as well as emphasizes the strategic role of ongoing monitoring/feedback for future benefits sustainability.

A Study of Urban Employed Wives무 Family Financial Management and Economic Well-Being (도시 취업주부의 가계재무관리행동과 경제복지감)

  • The family financial management is the important element which has a effect on the improvement of family economic well-being. Thus the study sets up human & material resources and requirement as an input factor, family financial management as an throughput factor, and economic well-being as an output factor, and then identifies if there are some relationships among them by using a systematic approach of family financial management. The questionaires were distributed to 600 employed wives by carrying out cluster sampling and disproportional stratified sampling. The 573 cases of them were used as the mean, ratio, Pearson’s Correration, ANOVA, factors analysis, and Stepwise Regression using the SAS/PC+. The major findings of the study are as follows: 1) A practical application of information as on input variable, appears the fator which has an important effect upon the throughput factor, that is, family financial management. The employed wives should manage a lot of resources in rapidly changing social-economic circustances. So it shows that not only they should take informations open to their daily life and then make practical use of them in managing their family finance, but also they must be capable of judging and accepting reasonable informations in order to gain and manage resources suitable to the characteristics of family finance and family members’need. 2) There was significant relationship between the employed wives’family financial management and family economic well-being, focused on the systematic theory of family financial management. This study provides for the information to develope the program for the employed wives’family financial planning and counseling.

  • The main bodies of housing markets of today need to carry out a systematic and objective feasibility analysis even from the step of planning in order to succeed in a diverse and complex market environment. Therefore, it is meaningful to understand this housing market environment and propose a necessary model for the feasibility analysis of hosing business. In this vein, the aim of this study was to extract an actual and practical feasibility analysis factor and its importance for housing market, and then present and apply a feasibility analysis factor model to an on-site example, in order to verify the model's validity. For this, the investigator interviewed with and carried out a questionnaire survey of experts in housing development projects. Study findings are as follows:First, the feasibility analysis factor, derived in this study, could provide a ground to evaluate the feasibility of subject projects in the planning of development through an analysis index. Second, when feasibility is under the level of carrying out the projects, it is possible to reexamine the projects through extracting analysis factors of which points are under the standard and via a feedback process for improvable analysis factors. Therefore, the result of applying the feasibility analysis model of this study to actual housing development projects analytically shows that the model could provide a practical evaluation criterion to the person in charge of project development through an analysis index.

A Study of the Improvement and Practical Use on the Website Measurement Scale (웹사이트 측정도구의 개발과 활용에 대한 연구)

  • The aim of this study is to suggest a new website measurement scale revised in accordance with the present tendency, and to test the practical use of it. The empirically current studies suggest the information, connectivity, practical function, lay - out, design, interlace, system, service as a website measurement scale. However. this study suggest a new website measurement scale including communication between internet users, platform for editing information. The test of a practical use about measurement scale progressed by a survey on computer access. A sample of 300 internet users answered the question based on a new website measurement scale. The result of this study shows that primary factors of the website measurement scale are information, user interface, website service, and communication. The influence of these factors on user's website preference changed as compared with the past. The result also shows that there is close correlation between information factor and communication factor. And the communication factor suggested on this study has effected in user's website satisfaction. Results imply that the idea of web2.0 is practically an important strategy for improving website satisfaction. And, because influence of primary factors on the website satisfaction has changed continually, strategic planning will have to be kept up.

  • In domestic construction industry, CM companies perform overall project management tasks such as planning, designing, construction management, evaluation, maintenance for construction projects. However, even with these tasks, as competition becomes more fierce and probability dependence is high, lots of CM companies are experiencing difficulties of securing and preparing indicators for order competence reinforcement. This study examines domestic business condition and task analysis. Also Competence factors are derived through institutional and legal investigation, and review of existing literature. The derived competence factors are focused on practical factors by interviewing with experts. competence factors for each type were classified into BSC's four perspectives(Finance / Customers / Internal processes / Learning and Growth) and surveyed. Based on the results of the survey, the priorities of competence factors that companies should focus on were derived. The purpose of this study is to contribute on making an indicator that can be utilized on business activities through priority analysis of competence factors for order competitiveness reinforcement of CM companies.

  • Construction industry, which is a composite industry being performed by organic combination of various tasks, gives birth to a various of information in the stages of planning, designing, and maintenance management. In particular, the drawing information is broad in the scope of use because it contains all information about buildings as wall as bid, materials, contracts. Therefore, the management of drawing information security is one of the most important factors, which determines the success of failure of business. The major findings and result of this study are as follows to control the distributed drawing information in the collaboration environment. 1) Analysis for function and practical use of DRM in the construction industry. 2) Proposal for applications of DRM that can secure IFC model-based drawing information in the collaboration environment. 3) Extraction from additional IFC entities to apply DRM to part 21 physical files 4) Analysis for functions which are necessary in DRM application prototype system and development of the system. 5) Development IFC model-based DRM prototype system.
