In this research TPS (Train Performance Simulation) blocks are designed using Simulink and applied to generate speed profiles for energy-efficient train operation. With a train operation mode of maximum powering, coasting, and maximum breaking, a breaking point is calculated from forward-backward running profiles. Then, GA (Genetic Algorithm) is used to solve a running time constraint, and a coasting point is produced from the searching process of GA. With the breaking point and the coasting point a speed profile is plotted. Train performance under a speed limit and gradient variations is simulated and resultant speed profiles are analyzed.
Many sensitive loads always rely on UPS systems to maintain continuous power during abnormal utility power conditions. As any disturbance occurs at the utility side, an off-line UPS system takes over the load within a quarter cycle to avoid a blackout. However, the starting of the inverter can root the momentous inrush current for the transformer installed before the load, due to its magnetic saturation. The consequences of this current can be a reduction of line voltage and tripping of protective devices of the UPS system. Furthermore, it can also damage the transformer and decrease its lifetime by increasing the mechanical stresses on its windings. To prevent the inrush current, and to avoid its disruptive effects, this paper proposes an off-line UPS system that eliminates the inrush current phenomenon while powering the transformer coupled loads, using a current regulated voltage source inverter (CRVSI) instead of a typical voltage source inverter (VSI). Simulations have been performed to validate the operation of proposed off-line UPS system.

Early detection of an internal malfunction of machinery plays a very important part in all condition monitoring programs. Sensors to detect amplitude. velocity and acceleration are widely used in vibration detection and control. Piezoceramic materials are largely used in sensors and actuators for vibration monitoring and control due to their relatively large output from an induced strain and their arguable self powering characteristics. In this paper a cheap and yet reliable sensors/actuators were developed to detect vibration. The results show that low cost PZT can be designed for optimum detection of bearing vibration. This paper presents the experimental results of a number of piezoceramics characteristics in terms of resonant frequencies and variation of PZT constants with temperature.
Design of novel materials in renewable energy systems plays a key role in powering transportation vehicles and portable electronics. This review introduces the research work of first principles-based computational design for the materials over the last decade to accomplish the goal with less financial and temporal cost beyond the conventional approach, especially, focusing on electrocatalyst toward a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). It is proposed that the new method combined with experimental validation, can provide fundamental descriptors and mechanical understanding for optimal efficiency control of a whole system. Advancing these methods can even realize a computational platform of the materials genome, which can substantially reduce the time period from discovery to commercialization into markets of new materials.
A new PWM rectifier which offers a unity power factor is proposed. The circuit has same inductance as the conventional boosting type PWM rectifier in powering mode, but the inductance is splitted to 2 part in freewheeling mode. So the period of freewheeling mode is shorter than that of conventional boosting type PWM rectifier, and discontinuous input current is obtained in wide duty range. Therefore the proposed PWM rectifier accomplishs a unity power factor in wide range of duty ratio and boosting factor. And the conventional boosting type PWM rectifier has poor power factor near the unity boosting ratio, the proposed PWM rectifier improves this problem. The mathmatical analysis are presented and experimental results are given.
A new concept design of electromagnetic energy harvester is proposed for powering a tire pressure monitoring sensor (TPMS). The thin coil strap is attached on the circumferential surface of a rim and a permanent magnet is placed on the brake caliper system. When the wheel rotates, the relative motion between the magnet and the coil generates electrical energy by electromagnetic induction. The generated energy is stored in a storage unit (rechargeable battery, capacitor) and used for TPMS operation and wireless signal transmission. Innovative layered design of the strap is provided for maximizing energy generation. Finite Element Method (FEM) and experiment results on the proposed design are compared to validate the proposed design; further, the method for design improvement is discussed. The proposed design is excellent in terms of durability and sustainability because it utilizes the everlasting rotary motion throughout the vehicle life and does not require material deformation.
A bimodal tram is being developed to combine the flexibility of a bus with the punctuality of a train. The propulsion system is a series hybrid type using a set of CNG engine generator and Li-polymer battery. This paper presents the experimental results of the series hybrid propulsion power unit using an active loader which can simulate powering and regenerative braking conditions of the propulsion equipments continuously. The power sharing scheme between PWM converter and a battery pack has been observed. The measurement results of DC link voltage and SOC(State Of Charge) of battery pack are presented.
The recent environmental protection trend requires more strict energy saving, therefore every transportation system should reduce energy consumption to the minimum value. High-efficiency operation system, energy saving and CO2 emissions shall be addressed as important issue in railway system. These issues are the most essential factors of railway, compared to major public transportation system. Recently, saving energy in the electric railway system has been studied. For such new energy saving, the Energy storage system is considered for saving energy. Energy saving is possible by efficient use of regenerated energy. Regenerated energy is recycled amongst vehicles by mean of charge and discharge corresponding to powering and braking of electric vehicle operations. This energy saving contributes to cut CO2 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Recycling regenerated energy demonstrate significant effect on peak cut of consumption energy in railway substation. Absorption of excess energy avoids regeneration failure due to high traction voltage. This paper presents effects by applying the energy storage system to SeoulMetro Line 2.
Energy harvesting from the vibration through the piezoelectric effect has been studied for powering the wireless sensor node. As piezoelectric unimorph cantilever structure can transfer low vibration to large displacement, this structure was commonly deployed to harvest electric energy from vibrations. Piezoelectric unimorph structure was composed of small stiff piezoelectric ceramic on the large flexible substrate. As there is the large Young's modulus difference between the flexible substrate and stiff piezoelectric ceramic, flexible substrate could not homogeneously transfer the vibration to stiff piezoelectric ceramic. As a result, most piezoelectric ceramics had been broken at the certain point. We measured and analyzed the stress distribution on the piezoelectric ceramic on the cantilever.
The industrial accident in subway of late is increasingly coming to the front as a serious problem of society because a scale of industrial accident is a large size, and powerfulness, while the percent of accident is decreasing as a result of industrial facilities with the largeness of equipment, automation, and high horse-powering. In this paper, a study on the estimation of accident loss prevention cost and risk analysis in subway construction is proposed as an alternative to the techniques currently used in the general construction projects safety. Then the concept of risk evaluation using a risk assessment model is presented to drive value of risk and numerical example for risk analysis. A means for this does grasp the importance of educational factor by way of analyzing the causes of accident through statistical data of labor department, emphasizing the necessity and the importance of safety education, being helpful to act safety by decreasing insecure activity which ranks the majority of accident causes with putting the education program, form, method into practice that are suitable for a place of business.
