  • This paper addresses several issues concerning the analysis, design, modeling, simulation and development of single-phase, single-switch, power factor corrected AC-DC high frequency switching converter topologies with transformer isolation. A detailed analysis and design is presented for single-switch topologies, namely forward buck, flyback, Cuk, Sepic and Zeta buck-boost converters, with high frequency isolation for discontinuous conduction modes (DCM) of operation. With an awareness of modem design trends towards improved performance, these switching converters are designed for low power rating and low output voltage, typically 20.25W with 13.5V in DCM operation. Laboratory prototypes of the proposed single-switch converters in DCM operation are developed and test results are presented to validate the proposed design and developed model of the system.

  • The design and performance analysis of a power factor corrected (PFC), single-phase, single switch flyback buck-boost ac-dc converter is carried out for low power battery charging applications. The proposed configuration of the flyback buck-boost ac-dc converter consists of only one switch and operates in discontinuous current mode (DCM), resulting in simplicity in design and manufacturing and reduction in input current total harmonic distortion (THD). The design procedure of the flyback buck-boost ac-dc converter is presented for the battery charging application. To verify and investigate the design and performance, a simulation study of the flyback buck-boost converter in DCM is performed using the PSIM6.0 platform. A laboratory prototype of the proposed single switch flyback buck-boost ac-dc converter is developed and test results are presented to validate the design and developed model of the system.

  • Fairchild Green Mode off line buck switch for low standby power consumption and high reliability is presented. By reducing operating current and optimizing switching frequency, 20mW power consumption is achieved. High performance trans-conductance amplifier and green mode function improve the ripple and regulation in the output voltage. The conventional $FPS^{TM}$ buck and novel Fairchild buck switch are compared to show the improvement of performance. Experimental results are showed using 2W evaluation board.

  • This letter presents a small-sized, high-power single-pole double-throw (SPDT) switch with defected ground structure (DGS) for wireless broadband Internet application. To reduce the circuit size by using a slow-wave characteristic, the DGS is used for the quarter-wave (${\lambda}$/4) transmission line of the switch. To secure a high degree of isolation, the switch with DGS is composed of shunt-connected PIN diodes. It shows an insertion loss of 0.8 dB, an isolation of 50 dB or more, and power capability of at least 50 W at 2.3 GHz. The switch shows very similar performance to the conventional shunt-type switch, but the circuit size is reduced by about 50% simply with the use of DGS patterns.

  • In this paper, a totem pole PFC was structured in two methods with FET and diode for low-speed switch while GaN FET was used for high-speed switch. Internal power loss, power conversion efficiency and steady-state characteristics of the two methods were compared in the totem pole bridgeless PFC circuit which is widely applied in large-capacity and high-efficiency switching rectifier of 500W or more. In order to compare and confirm the steady-state characteristics under equal conditions, a 2kW class totem pole bridgeless PFC was constructed and the experimental results were analyzed. From the experimental results, it was confirmed that the low-speed switch operation has a large difference in efficiency due to the internal conduction loss of the low-speed switch at a low input voltage. Especially, input power factor and load characteristic showed no difference regardless of the low-speed switch operation.

  • Closing switch, key component of pulsed power system, is constructed simply and used frequently due to the easy control and manufacture of one. The kind of one are spark-gap, triggered vacuum switch, pseudo-spark switch and INPIStron. But the electrode of spark gap switch is damaged with the hot spot by Z-pinch and then the life of one become short. INPIStron with inverse pinch effect has long life but it is difficult trigger system to provide uniform discharge between cathode and anode. In this paper, the design and manufacturing of INPIStron with gas puffing trigger method in order to supply uniform discharge inter-electrode and the performance of the developed INPIStron applied to 500[kA]-2[MJ] pulsed power system is presented.

  • This paper describes for reducing harmonic distortion on CO2 welding machine with nonlinear load characteristic using single-switch three-phase AC/DC converter. The low-order harmonic component amplitude of the phase current of single-switch three-phase discontinuous mode is calculated. Experimental results show that CO2 welding machine with single-switch three-phase AC/DC converter is effectively controlled with power factor correction for phase current during welding time.

  • This paper proposes a low power-loss current measurement using a resistor and bypass switch. Conventional current sensing method using a resistor has a disadvantage of power loss which degrades the efficiency of the entire systems. On the other hand, proposed measurement technique operating with bypass-switch connected in parallel with sensing resistor can reduce power loss significantly the current sensor. The propose measurement works for discrete-time sampling of current sensing. Even while the analog-digital conversion does not occur at the controller, the sensing voltage across the sensor still causes ohmic conduction loss without information delivery. Hence, the bypass switch bypasses the sensing current with a small amount of power loss. In this paper, a 90[W] prototype hardware has been implemented for photovoltaic MPPT experimental verification of the proposed low power-loss current measurement technique. From the results, it can be seen that PV power observation is successfully done with the proposed method.

  • This work investigates the commutation characteristics of the current flowing through an electrical-contact-type switch to the semiconductor switch branch during the breaking operation of hybrid DC switchgear. A simple, reliable, low-cost natural commutation method is proposed, and the current commutation characteristics are analyzed in accordance with the conduction voltage drop of the semiconductor switch branch through experiments. A prototype 400 V/10 A class natural commutation type hybrid DC switchgear is set up. Its performance is verified, and its characteristics are analyzed.

  • In this paper, new smart switch that can monitor and control the power consumption and standby power in real-time by implementing an embedded web-server is proposed. The proposed switch can perform the following functions: measuring the electric power like commercial smart meter product, monitoring the power consumption in real-time in distant places through wire and wireless devices, and finally controlling ON/OFF of each switch. In addition, it also contains auto power-shutoff functions for standy power, overvoltage and overcurrent just like existing power-saving outlet and mulitap. Finally, the proposed smart switch has lower hardware and power consumption than the existing products and can be commercialized as a small-sized product by using exclusive embedded web-server of its own, rather than using PC for monitoring and remote control.
