A correct understanding of vibration-based degradation is crucial from the standpoint of maintenance for Steam Generators (SG) as crucial mechanical equipment in nuclear power plants. This study has established a novel approach to developing a model for investigating tube bundle degradation according to crack growth caused by two-phase Flow-Induced Vibration (FIV). An important step in the approach is to calculate the two-phase flow field parameters between the SG tube bundles in various zones using the porous media model to determine the velocity and vapor volume fraction. Afterward, to determine the vibration properties of the tube bundles, the Fluid-Solid Interaction (FSI) analysis is performed in eighteen thermal-hydraulic zones. Tube bundle degradation based on crack growth using the sixteen most probable initial cracks and within each SG thermal-hydraulic zone is performed to calculate useful lifetime. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model, Paris law, and Wiener process model are considered to model the turbulent crossflow around the tube bundles, simulation of elliptical crack growth due to the vibration characteristics, and estimation of SG tube bundles degradation, respectively. The analysis shows that the tube deforms most noticeably in the zone with the highest velocity. As a result, cracks propagate more quickly in the tube with a higher height. In all simulations based on different initial crack sizes, it was observed that zone 16 experiences the greatest deformation and, subsequently, the fastest degradation, with a velocity and vapor volume fraction of 0.5 m/s and 0.4, respectively.
The rheological properties of exopolysaccharide, p-KG03, produced by marine microalgae Gyrodinium impudicum strain KG03 had been studied. The intrinsic viscosity of this p-KG03 was calculated to 65.22 and 50.75 $d{\ell}/g$ using Huggins and Kramer equations (xanthan gum 24.41 and 24.03). Aqueous dispersions at p-KG03 concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 % (w/w) showed marked shear-thinning properties as Power-Law behavior. In aqueous dispersions of p-KG03 1.0 %, consistency index (K) and flow behavior index (n) were 2,172 and 0.52. The apparent viscosity and the influence of shear rate on different conditions as p-KG03 concentrations, pH, NaCl, $CaCl_2$ and temperature in aqueous solutions were measured. And p-KG03 had mixed with aqueous solutions of xanthan gum and gellan gum, and invested the change of mixed aqueous solution behavior.
This study was performed to provide basic rheological data of dandelion root concentrates in order to predict their processing aptitude and usefulness as functional foods material. The hot water and 70% ethanol extracts of dandelion root were concentrated at 5, 20, and 50 Brix, and their static viscosity, dynamic viscosity, and Arrhenius plots were investigated. Almost all hot water concentrates showed the typical flow properties of a pseudoplastic fluid, but evaluation using the power law model indicated that the 70% ethanol concentrates showed a flow behavior close to a Newtonian fluid. The apparent viscosity of hot water and 70% ethanol concentrates decreased with increasing temperature. Yield stresses of hot water and 70% ethanol concentrates by Herschel-Bulkley model application were in the range of 0.026 - 1.368 Pa and 0.022 - 0.238 Pa, respectively. The effect of temperature and concentration on the apparent viscosity was examined by Arrhenius equation. The activation energies of hot water and 70% ethanol concentrates were in the range of $8.762-23.778{\times}10^3\;J/mol{\cdot}kg$ and $3.217-20.384{\times}10^3\;J/mol{\cdot}kg$ with increasing concentration, respectively. Storage (G') and loss (G") moduli were generally increased with increasing frequency. For the 70% ethanol concentrates, G" predominated over G' at all applied frequencies and so they showed the typical flow behavior of a low molecular solution. However, for the hot water concentrates, G' predominated over G" at more than 1.9 rad/sec (cross-over point) and so they showed the typical flow behavior of a macromolecular solution.
Modelling an equilibrium atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) in computational wind engineering (CWE) and relevant areas requires the boundary conditions, the turbulence model and associated constants to be consistent with each other. Among them, the inflow boundary conditions play an important role and determine whether the equations of the turbulence model are satisfied in the whole domain. In this paper, the idea of modeling an equilibrium ABL through specifying proper inflow boundary conditions is extended to the SST $k-{\omega}$ model, which is regarded as a better RANS model for simulating the blunt body flow than the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. Two new sets of inflow boundary conditions corresponding to different descriptions of the inflow velocity profiles, the logarithmic law and the power law respectively, are then theoretically proposed and numerically verified. A method of determining the undetermined constants and a set of parameter system are then given, which are suitable for the standard wind terrains defined in the wind load code. Finally, the full inflow boundary condition equations considering the scale effect are presented for the purpose of general use.

Reynolds equation, which describes behavior of fluid film in journal bearing, basically satisfies mass conservation. But, boundary conditions usually used with this equation, e.g. half Sommerfeld or Reynolds boundary conditions, cannot fulfill this natural law of conservation. In the case of connecting rod bearing, where applied load is dynamic and its magnitude is relatively large, such unrealistic boundary conditions have serious influence on calculation results, especially on lubricant flow rate or power dissipation which are important parameters in thermal analysis. Another important factor in the analysis of connecting rod bearing is elastic deformation of bearing support structure which is relatively flexible. In this paper, EHL analysis of connecting rod beating is performed using mass-conserving boundary condition. Elastic deformation of bearing support structure and application of mass-conserving boundary condition have significant effects on the performances of connecting rod bearing.
An efficient large eddy simulation algorithm is used to compute surface pressure distributions on an eleven story (target) building on the NIST campus. Local meteorology, neighboring buildings, topography and large vegetation (trees) all play an important part in determining the flows and therefore the pressures experienced by the target. The wind profile imposed at the upstream surface of the computational domain follows a power law with an exponent representing a suburban terrain. This profile accounts for the flow retardation due to friction from the surface of the earth, but does not include fluctuations that would naturally occur in this flow. The effect of neighboring buildings on the time dependent surface pressures experienced by the target is examined. Comparison of the pressure fluctuations on the single target building alone with those on the target building in situ show that, owing to vortices shed by the upstream buildings, fluctuations are larger when such buildings are present. Even when buildings are lateral to or behind the target, the pressure disturbances generate significantly different flows around this building. A simple grid-free mathematical model of a tree is presented in which the trunk and the branches are each represented by a collection of spherical particles strung together like beads on a string. The drag from the tree, determined as the sum of the drags of the component particles, produces an oscillatory, spreading wake of slower fluid, suggesting that the behavior of trees as wind breakers can be modeled usefully.

We analyzed the non-Newtonian and non-isothermal flow in the melt conveying zone in co-rotating and counter-rotating screw extruder system with the commercial code, STAR-CD, and compared the mixing performance with respect to screw speed and rotating direction. The viscosity of fluid was described by power-law model. The dynamics of mixing was studied numerically by tracking the motion of particles in a twin screw extruder system. The extent of mixing was characterized in terms of the residence time distribution and average strain. The results showed that high screw speed decreases the residence time but increases the shear rate. Therefore higher screw speed increases the strain and has better mixing performance. Counter-rotating screw extruder system and co-rotating screw extruder has the similar shear rate with the same screw speed in spite of different rotating direction. However, the counter-rotating screw has good mixing performance, which is resulted from longer residence time than that of co-rotating screw extruder.

An experiment was carried out to evaluate the heat transfer enhancement and the pressure drop characteristics for liquid nitrogen using wire-coil-insert technique under horizontal two-phase conditions. The tube inner diameters were 8 mm and 15 mm, respectively and the tube length was 4.7 m. The helix angle of the wire coil insert was $50^{\circ}$ and its length was 4.7 m. Heat transfer coefficients for both the plain and the enhanced test tubes were calculated from the measurements of temperatures, flow rates and pressure drops. A correlation in a power-law relationship of the Nusselt number, Reynolds number and Prandtl number for the heat transfer was proposed which can be available for design of cryogenic heat exchangers. The correlation showed that heat transfer coefficients for the wire-coil inserts were much higher than those for plain tubes, increased by more than $1.8{\sim}2.0$ times depending upon the range of the equivalent Reynolds number. The correlation was compared with other various correlations in the turbulent flow conditions.
Basic rheological data of dandelion leaf concentrates were determined to predict processing aptitude and usefulness of dandelion leaf concentrates as functional food materials. Hot water and 70% ethanol extracts of dandelion leaves were concentrated at 5, 20, and 50 Brix, and their static and dynamic viscosities, and Arrhenius plots were investigated. Most concentrated dandelion leaves extracted with hot water and 70% ethanol showed flow behaviors close to Newtonian fluid based on power law model evaluation. Apparent viscosity of concentrated dandelion leaves extracted with hot water and 70% ethanol decreased with increasing temperature. Yield stresses of concentrated dandelion leaves extracted with hot water and 70% ethanol by Herschel-Bulkley model application were 0.020-0.641 and 0.017-0.079 Pa, respectively. Activation energies of concentrated dandelion leaves extracted with hot water and 70% ethanol were $2.102-32.669{\times}10^3$ and $1.657-5.382{\times}10^3\;J/mol{\cdot}kg$ with increasing concentration, respectively. Loss modulus (G") predominated over storage modulus (G') at all applied frequencies, showing typical flow behavior of low molecular solution. G' and G" of concentrated dandelion leaves extracted with hot water slowly increased with increasing frequency compared to those of concentrated dandelion leaves extracted with 70% ethanol.

This study examines thermal safety on three-way catalyst that dominates 70 % among whole exhaust gas purification device in 2003. Three-way catalyst durability in the Korea requires 5 years/80,000 km in 1988 but require 10 years/120,000 km after 2002. Three-way catalyst durability in the USA requires 7 years/120,000 km but require 10 years/160,000 km after 2004. Three-way catalyst maintains high temperature in interior domain but maintains low temperature on outside surface. Therefore this device shows tensile stress on outside surface. Temperature distribution of three-way catalyst was acquired by thermal flow analysis for predicted thermal flow parameter. Thermal stress analysis for three-way catalysis was performed based on this temperature distribution. Thermal safety of three-way catalyst was estimated by power law dynamic fatigue life estimation and strength reduction methods for thermal stress.
