응급의료 전달체계의 충실 방안 (A Study in an Effective Programs for Emergency Care Delivery System)

  • As the society is being industrialized, the fast-paced economic development that has caused substantial increase in cerebrovascular and coronary artery diseases and the industrial development and increased use of means of transportation have resulted in the rapid rise of incidents in external injuries as well. So the pubic has become acutely aware of the need for fast and effective emergency care delivery system. The goal of emergency care delivery system is to meet the emergency care needs of patients. The emergency care delivery system is seeking to efficiently satisfy the care needs of people. Therefore the purpose of this study is designed to develop an effective programs for emergency care delivery system in Korea. The following specific objectives were investigated. This emergency care delivery system must have the necessary man power, for transfering the patients, communication net work, and emergency care facilities. 1) Man power Emergency care requires n0t only specialized traning in the emergency treatment but also knowledge and experience i11 other related area, so emergency care personnel traning program should be designed in order to adapt to the specific need of emergency patients. It will be necessary to ensure professional personnel who aquires the sufficient traning and experience for emergency care and to look for legal basis. We have to develop re-educational programs for emergency nurse specialist. They should be received speciality of emergency nursing care so that they will work actively and positively in emergency part. Emergency medical doctor and nurse specialist should be given an education which is related in emergency and critical care. Emergency care personnel will continue to provide both acute and continuing care as partner with other medical team. 2) Transfering the patients. Successful management of pre-hospital care requires adequate traning for the emergency medical technician. Traning program should be required to participate in a actual first aids activites in order to have apportunities to acquire practical skills as well as theoretical knowledge. The system of emergency medical technician should be remarkablly successful with first responder firefighters. Establishing this system must add necessary ambulances operating at any given time. It will be necessary to standardize the ambulance size and equipment. Ambulance should be arranged with each and every fire station. 3) Communication net work. The head office of emergency commumication network should be arranged with the head office of fire station in community. It is proposed that Hot-line system for emergency care should be introduce. High controlled ambulance and thirtial emergency center should simultaneously equip critical-line in order to communication with each other. Ordinary ambulance and secondary emergency facility should also simultaneously equip emergency-line in order to communication with each other. 4) Emergency care facilities. Primary emergency care facilities should be covered with the ambulatory emergency patients-minor illness and injuires. Secondary emergency care facilities should be covered with the emergency admission patients. Third emergency care center should be covered with the critical patients who need special treatments and operation. Secondary and third emergency care facilities should employ emergency medical doctor and emergency nurse specialist to treat in-patients with severe and acute illness and multiple injuires. It should be fashioned for a system of emergency facilities that meets emergency patients needs. Provide incentives for increased number of emergency care facilities with traning in personal/clinical emergency care. 5) Finance It is recommended to put the finance of a emergency care on a firm basis. The emergency care delivery system should be managed by the government or accreditted organizations. In order to facilitate this relevant program the fund is needed for more efficient and effective emergency researchs, service, programs, and policy. 6) Gaining understanding and co-operation of pubic It is also important to undertake pubic education to improve understanding of first aids and C. P. R of individuals, communities and business. It is proposed that teachers and health officers be certified in C. P. R. The C. P. R education can be powerful influence save lives. Lastly appropriate emergency care information must be provided to the pubic for assisting them in choosing emergency care.

콩 분말을 이용한 청국장 제조 기술 개발 (Processing of Cheonggukjang using soybean powder)

  • 1. 원료 형태별 청국장의 발효시간에 따른 건물중은 콩, 환, 분말의 모든 원료형태에서 발효시간이 경과할수록 건물의 중량이 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 2. 원료 형태별 청국장의 발효시간에 따른 진의 길이 변화를 측정한 결과, 모든 원료 형태에서 발효시간이 경과할수록 진의 길이가 증가하는 경향을 보였으며, 48시간 이후에는 그 증가치가 완만함을 보였다. 태광콩을 콩의 형태로 발효하였을 때 진의 생성이 가장 많았고, 분말을 1cm의 두께로 발효하였을때 진이 거의 생성되지 않았다. 3. 원료 형태별 청국장의 발효시간에 따른 생균수의 변화를 측정한 결과, 콩 형태로 발효시켰을 경우 모든 품종에서 비슷한 수준의 생균수가 측정되었다. 환 형태로 발효시켰을 경우 12시간 이후에 생균수가 급격히 증가하다가 24시간 이후 증가치가 완만해졌다. 분말형태로 발효시켰을 경우 시간에 따라 경시적으로 증가하였다. 4. 원료 형태별 청국장의 발효시간에 따른 색도의 변화를 측정한 결과, 모든 원료 형태에서 발효시간이 경과할수록 명도는 흑색에 가까워졌고, 색상과 채도의 경우는 각각 적색과 황색을 띠는 쪽으로 변화하였다. 5. 원료 형태별 청국장의 발효시간에 따른 pH의 변화를 측정한 결과, 모든 원료 형태에서 발효시간이 경과할수록 알칼리성으로 변화하였다. 6. 원료 형태별 청국장의 발효시간에 따른 isoflavone 함량의 변화를 측정한 결과, 발효 후 48시간까지 isoflavone의 함량이 증가하다 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 7. 청국장을 건조온도를 달리하여 균의 재생능력을 실험해본 결과 동결건조를 하였을 때 가장 많은 수의 균이 존재하였다. 8. 분말 또는 분말 (환)의 형태로 청국장을 만들 경우 종자 이용 시 보다 청국장의 품질이 떨어졌으며 분말 (환)을 이용하여 경제적인 청국장 제조를 위해서는 더 많은 연구가 필요한 것으로 고려되어 진다.

배출가스 중 응축성미세먼지 특성 연구 (A Study on the Characteristics of Condensable Fine Particles in Flue Gas)

  • The study evaluated methods to measure condensable fine particles in flue gases and measured particulate matter by fuel and material to get precise concentrations and quantities. As a result of the method evaluation, it is required to improve test methods for measuring Condensable Particulate Matter (CPM) emitted after the conventional Filterable Particulate Matter (FPM) measurement process. Relative Standard Deviation (RSD) based on the evaluated analysis process showed that RSD percentages of FPM and CPM were around 27.0~139.5%. As errors in the process of CPM measurement and analysis can be caused while separating and dehydrating organic and inorganic materials from condensed liquid samples, transporting samples, and titrating ammonium hydroxide in the sample, it is required to comply with the exact test procedures. As for characteristics of FPM and CPM concentrations, CPM had about 1.6~63 times higher concentrations than FPM, and CPM caused huge increase in PM mass concentrations. Also, emission concentrations and quantities varied according to the characteristics of each fuel, the size of emitting facilities, operational conditions of emitters, etc. PM in the flue gases mostly consisted of CPM (61~99%), and the result of organic/inorganic component analysis revealed that organic dusts accounted for 30~88%. High-efficiency prevention facilities also had high concentrations of CPM due to large amounts of $NO_x$, and the more fuels, the more inorganic dusts. As a result of comparison between emission coefficients by fuel and the EPA AP-42, FPM had lower result values compared to that in the US materials, and CPM had higher values than FPM. For the emission coefficients of the total PM (FPM+CPM) by industry, that of thermal power stations (bituminous coal) was 71.64 g/ton, and cement manufacturing facility (blended fuels) 18.90 g/ton. In order to estimate emission quantities and coefficients proper to the circumstances of air pollutant-emitting facilities in Korea, measurement data need to be calculated in stages by facility condition according to the CPM measurement method in the study. About 80% of PM in flue gases are CPM, and a half of which are organic dusts that are mostly unknown yet. For effective management and control of PM in flue gases, it is necessary to identify the current conditions through quantitative and qualitative analysis of harmful organic substances, and have more interest in and conduct studies on unknown materials' measurements and behaviors.

토출압력(吐出壓力) 및 호오스길이가 도달성(到達性)에 미치는 영향(影響)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) (The Effect of Pressure and Hose Length on the Travelling Distance of Particles in Power Sprayer)

  • 동력분무기(動力噴霧機)의 능률적(能率的)인 방제작업(防除作業)을 실시(實施)하기 위하여 호오스 길이 및 토출압력별(吐出壓力別)로 도달성(到達性)에 영향(影響)을 미치는 제인자(諸因子)를 구명(究明)하고자 균등분포율(均等分布率) 10%이상(以上)의 최대도달거리(最大到達距離), 균등분포율(均等分布率) 50%이상(以上)의 유효도달거리, 균등분포율(均等分布率)에 의한 최다낙하량분포중심위치(最多落下量分布中心位置)및 분무입자(噴霧粒子), 압력(壓力)의 변화등(變化等)을 측정(側定)하여 분석(分析)한 결과(結果)를 종합(綜合)하면 다음과 같다. 1. 분무(噴霧)호오스의 길이가 증가(增加)함에 따라 관마찰(管摩擦)에 의한 손실(損失)로 최다낙하량분포중심위치(最多落下量分布中心位置)가 100m 길이에서 0.5m 짧아지는 경향을 보였고, 최대도달거리(最大到達距離)는 100m 길이에서 13mm 호오스가 0.5m, 8.5mm 호오스가 1.0m, 유효도달거리는 각각(各各) 0.5m 감소(減所)하였다. 2. 상용압력(常用壓力)(28kg/$cm^2$)하(下)에서 분무(噴霧)호오스의 길이를 최소(最小)로 하더라도 유효도달거리는 14m이상(以上) 초과(超過)하기 어려울 것으로 판단(判斷)되며, 13mm 호오스가 8.5mm 호오스에 비(比)하여 1.0m정도(程度) 도달거리(到達距離)가 증가(增加)하였다. 3. 13mm 호오스에서는 토출압력(吐出壓力)이 8kg/$cm^2$ 상승(上昇)함에 따라 최다낙하량분포중심위치(最多落下量分布中心位置)가 0.5m(1kg/$cm^2$당(當) 약(約) 0.06m) 연장(延長)되었고 최대도달거리(最大到達距離)는 2.0m, 유효도달거리는 0.5m 증가(增加)하였다. 또 8.5mm 호오스에 있어서는 토출압력(吐出壓力) 변화(變化)가 도달성(到達性)에 거의 영향(影響)을 미치지 않았다. 4. 분무(噴霧)호오스 길이의 감소(減少) 및 토출압력(吐出壓力)의 증가(增加)가 분무입자(噴霧粒子)의 미립화효과에 크게 기여(寄與)하고, 분무입경(噴霧粒徑)은 분무압력(噴霧壓力)과 호오스 내경(內徑)의 크기에 상호관련성(相互關聯性)이 있는 것으로 생각된다. 5. 토출압력(吐出壓力) 25~33kg/$cm^2$에 대(對)한 분무(噴霧)호오스 끝에서의 압력강하(壓力降下)는 13mm 호오스가 100m 길이에서 3~7kg/$cm^2$로 10m 길이당(當) 2%정도(程度)의 비율(比率)로 압력(壓力)이 강하(降下)하였다.

한국주식시장에서 기업특성모형 적용에 관한 실증연구 (An Empirical Study on Korean Stock Market using Firm Characteristic Model)

  • 본 논문은 우리나라 주식시장을 대상으로 Haugen Baker(1996)가 제시한 기업특성요인모형을 적용하여 주식수익률 결정요인을 분석하였다. 분석기간은 1999년부터 2007년까지 총 8년간이며, 총 690개의 상장기업의 월별 자료를 이용하였다. 기존 연구에서 제시된 변수를 바탕으로 유동성, 위험, 과거주가, 가격수준, 수익성 등과 관련된 16개의 변수를 독립변수로, 690개 주식의 월별 수익률을 종속변수로 하여 시간가변 회귀분석을 통해 분석결과의 강건성을 높이고자 하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같이 요약될 수 있다. 첫째, 기업특성정보가 주식수익률 결정에 미치는 사전적 영향을 분석한 결과 해당기업이 공개한 직전월의 기업특성 정보 중 당월의 주가에 유의적인 영향을 나타내는 기업특성은 유동성, 모멘텀 지표인 1개월, 3개월, 6개월 초과수익률, 주가 승수 중 PSR, PBR, 수익성을 나타내는 ROE와 EPS 등의 8개 요인이다. 예측된 수익률을 이용하여 구축한 10개의 분위별 포트폴리오를 대상으로 실현수익률을 분석한 결과 예측수익률이 높을수록 실현된 수익률이 일관되게 높게 나타나는 것으로 분석되었다. 둘째, Haugen Baker가 제안한 기업특성모형을 이용한 주가예측모형을 바탕으로 구성된 포트폴리오를 Fama French가 제안한 3요인 모형에 적용시킨 결과 수익률이 높을 것으로 예측된 포트폴리오의 실현수익률이 높게 나타남을 확인하였다. 즉, 우리나라 주식시장의 수익률을 예측하는 데는 Haugen Baker의 기업특성 요인모형을 응용한 모형이 더욱 적합할 수 있으며, 이를 이용하는 것이 실무적으로도 유용성이 높을 것으로 기대할 수 있다. 본 연구는 기존연구를 보완하여 보다 강건한 예측 및 운영성과를 보여주기 위해 노력하였다. 이를 위해, 시간 가변적으로 (1) 요인프리미엄을 추정, (2) 수익률예측 및 포트폴리오 조정, (3) 실현수익률 측정의 과정을 반복적으로 수행하였으며, 예측수익률이 높은 포트폴리오의 실현수익률이 상대적으로 높게 나타나는 일관된 결과를 강건하게 보여주고 있다.

Excimer-Based White Phosphorescent OLEDs with High Efficiency

  • There are several ways to demonstrate white organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) for displays and solid state lighting applications. Among these approaches are the stacked three primary or two complementary colors light-emitting layers, multiple-doped emissive layer, and excimer and exciplex emission [1-10]. We report on white phosphorescent excimer devices by using two light emitting materials based on platinum complexes. These devices showed a peak EQE of 15.7%, with an EQE of 14.5% (17 lm/W) at $500\;cd/m^2$, and a noticeable improvement in both the CIE coordinates (0.381, 0.401) and CRI (81). Devices with the structure ITO/PEDOT:PSS/TCTA (30 nm)/26 mCPy: 12% FPt (10 nm) /26 mCPy: 2% Pt-4 (15 nm)/BCP (40 nm)/CsF/Al [device 1], ITO/PEDOT:PSS/TCTA (30 nm)/26 mCPy: 2% Pt-4 (15 nm)/26 mCPy: 12% FPt (10 nm)/BCP (40 nm)/CsF/Al [device 2], and ITO/PEDOT:PSS/TCTA (30 nm)/26 mCPy: 2% Pt-4: 12% FPt (25 nm)/BCP (40 nm)/CsF/Al [device 3] were fabricated. In these cases, the emissive layer was either the double-layer of 26 mCPy:12% FPt and 15 nm 26 mCPy: 2% Pt-4, or the single layer of 26mCPy with simultaneous doping of Pt-4 and FPt. Device characterization indicates that the CIE coordinates/CRI of device 2 were (0.341, 0.394)/75, (0.295, 0.365)/70 at 5 V and 7 V, respectively. Significant change in EL spectra with the drive voltage was observed for device 2 indicating a shift in the carrier recombination zone, while relatively stable EL spectra was observed for device 1. This indicates a better charge trapping in Pt-4 doped layers [10]. On the other hand, device 3 having a single light-emitting layer (doped simultaneously) emitted a board spectrum combining emission from the Pt-4 monomer and FPt excimer. Moreover, excellent color stability independent of the drive voltage was observed in this case. The CIE coordinates/CRI at 4 V ($40\;cd/m^2$) and 7 V ($7100\;cd/m^2$) were (0.441, 0.421)/83 and (0.440, 0.427)/81, respectively. A balance in the EL spectra can be further obtained by lowering the doping ratio of FPt. In this regard, devices with FPt concentration of 8% (denoted as device 4) were fabricated and characterized. A shift in the CIE coordinates of device 4 from (0.441, 0.421) to (0.382, 0.401) was observed due to an increase in the emission intensity ratio of Pt-4 monomer to FPt excimer. It is worth noting that the CRI values remained above 80 for such device structure. Moreover, a noticeable stability in the EL spectra with respect to changing bias voltage was measured indicating a uniform region for exciton formation. A summary of device characteristics for all cases discussed above is shown in table 1. The forward light output in each case is approximately $500\;cd/m^2$. Other parameters listed are driving voltage (Bias), current density (J), external quantum efficiency (EQE), power efficiency (P.E.), luminous efficiency (cd/A), and CIE coordinates. To conclude, a highly efficient white phosphorescent excimer-based OLEDs made with two light-emitting platinum complexes and having a simple structure showed improved EL characteristics and color properties. The EQE of these devices at $500\;cd/m^2$ is 14.5% with a corresponding power efficiency of 17 lm/W, CIE coordinates of (0.382, 0.401), and CRI of 81.

국내 전철 및 가전제품을 대상으로 한 전자장 수준 실태조사 (A survey on the EMF Levels of Study and Electric Appliances in Korea)

  • The purposes of this study was to collect, analyze, and describe the MF exposure levels from subways in Korea and to measure and evaluate the MF levels generated from electric appliances used at general homes. The target subway lines were Seoul Metropolitan Line 1 to Line 8, Bundang Line, Incheon Line, Daegu Line, Gwangju Line, and Busan Line 1 and Line 2. We measured at each station in those subway lines and, all the train types (pantograph-equipped, motor-equipped, and common), and platform types(facing and isolating) were investigated by the distance(80, 200, 400 cm) from the train on 19 targeted subway lines using 3 magnetic field measuring devices (EMDEXII, Enertech Co.) during the survey from January till October, 2004. On the other hand, the levels of the 60Hz magnetic fields generated from 14 items of home electric appliances such as electric blankets, hair dryers, electric razors, etc. were measured at 10 general homes using 5 EMDEXII meters with a sampling interval of 1.5 second by the distance(surface, 30, 50, 100, 300cm ) from the target electric appliances. The survey results in the whole subway lines examined in this study were as follows; Seoul Metropolitan Line 4 using AC(alternating current) power source showed the highest mean value of $2.85{\mu}T$, followed by Seoul Metropolitan Line 1 running between Seoul and Incheon using AC($2.78{\mu}T$), Seoul Metropolitan Line 1 between Seoul and Uijongbu using AC($2.73{\mu}T$), Bundang Line using AC($1.79{\mu}T$), Seoul Metropolitan Line 1 connected from Yongsan using AC($1.67{\mu}T$), Seoul Metropolitan Line 1 between Seoul and Suwon using AC($0.79{\mu}T$), and so on. In general, the intensity of the magnetic field in the subway systems in Korea was significantly higher when using AC($2.14{\pm}0.91{\mu}T$) than when using DC($0.29{\pm}0.44{\mu}T$) power source. Among the home electric appliances examined, microwave ovens showed the highest mean value of $7.69{\mu}T$, followed by hair dryers($6.47{\mu}T$), vacuum cleaners($5.27{\mu}T$), televisions ($2.26{\mu}T$), electric blankets($1.38{\mu}T$), personal computers ($0.81{\mu}T$), and so on. Two items of electric appliances showed the excess value of $0.2{\mu}T$ at the distance of 30cm in the MF exposure level; electric razors $1.58{\pm}2.13{\mu}T$ and vacuum cleaners $0.48{\pm}0.44{\mu}T$. As a whole, this study showed a tendency that the shift of the MF levels according to the increase of distance from the electric appliances was lower than those of the results surveyed in UK and USA. As a result, this study is expected to suggest meaningful data for the future study in exposure assessment of magnetic fields and for the establishment of guidelines for subways and electric appliances in Korea. More detailed and large scaled exposure assessment studies should be performed continuously to get the various and useful information on health risk assessment of MFs in Korea.

신문고 제도에 대한 몇 가지 쟁점: 기원과 운영, 기능.제도의 변천을 중심으로 (A Study on the Shinmoongo System: Issues of the Origin and Changes of Function and Institution)

  • 이 논문의 목적은 조선시대 '청원 상소 고발의 최후 수단'으로 알려진 신문고 제도의 기원, 기능과 운영의 변천, 그리고 대체기능을 수행했던 격쟁 제도의 배경과 그 부침에 대해 몇 가지 쟁점 중심으로 살펴보는 데 있다. 조선시대 군주와 신하들은 신문고 제도의 기원을 이론적 차원에서 하은주 삼대(三代)에 설치되었다는 '감간지고(敢諫之鼓)'로 보았지만, 실천적 차원에서 주자(朱子)가 활동했던 송나라의 태조가 설치하였다는 등문고(登聞鼓)라고 인식하였다. 그러나, 역사적 사실은 후한 때 이미 '간고'가 설치되어 있었으며 위진남북조 시대의 진조(晉朝)부터 시작하여 당 송을 거쳐 명 청에 이르기까지 지속적으로 '등문고'를 설치 운영한 것이다. 신문고 제도는 태종 때 개인적 상소사건 사회적 청원사건 국가적 고발사건 등을 다양하게 상달하는 '언론제도'였지만, 세종 2년부터 개인적 원억문제를 주로 해결하는 '사법제도'로 전락하였다. 원래의 설치 목적은 '억울한 일이 있으나 고할 데 없는 일반백성'들에게 그들의 하정을 상달하기 위한 것이었지만, 건국 초기 무질서한 가전상언(駕前上言)이나 월소직정의 폐단을 방지하기 위한 제도적 장치로 활용되었다. 일부 사대부 계급들의 사적 이익을 도모하는 도구로 악용되기도 하고 관찰사나 수령의 권력남용을 견제하는 역할을 수행하였던 신문고 제도는, 수도의 궁궐에 위치하고 여러 단계마다 각각 글로 올려야 되며, 위법 격고자에 대한 처벌도 과중하고 신분제 아래에서 상관에 관계되면 신문고 사용이 통제되는 까닭에 일반 백성들이나 천민들이 이용하기는 어려운 일이었다. 신문고 제도의 폐지 후 탄생한 격쟁 제도는 중국에 없는 우리나라 고유한 언로양식으로, 세조 14년에 '불법 관리에 대한 고소'가 허용되자 관사의 노복들이 내부 고발자가 되어 고소활동의 한 방편으로 마련되었다. 격쟁 제도의 설립 초기는 개인적 원억문제 해결을 위한 것이 아니었지만, 나중에 결국 신문고 제도의 대안적 장치로 그 역할을 수행하게 되었다. 신문고 제도는 조선시대에 발달된 합법적 언론제도뿐만 아니라 비합법적 반(半)합법적 언론제도 예컨대, 통문(通文)이나 격문(檄文), 등장(等狀), 격쟁(擊錚), 가전상언(駕前上言), 규혼, 익명서(匿名書) 등과 함께 적절하게 연동함으로써 결과적으로 왕권을 강화하고 신권을 약화시키는 효과를 얻을 수 있었다.

  • 기체/전해질/LSM $(La_{0.85}Sr_{0.15}MnO_3)$ 공기극이 만나는 삼상계면 (triple phase boundary) 주위에 YSZ ($8mol\%$ yttria stabilized zirconia) 코팅막 (coating film) 을 형성하여 추가로 삼상계면을 크게 늘린 새로운 전극 미세구조를 갖는 복합 공기극 (composite cathode) 을 개발하였다. 이 복합 공기극을 전해질 두께가 약 $30{\mu}m$인 연료극 (anode)v 지지체 위에 형성하여 $700\~800{\circ}C$의 온도에서 전류전압 특성 및 교류 임피던스 분석을 실시하였다. $800^{\circ}$, 공기 및 수소 조건에서 교류 임피던스 분석 결과 1000Hz주파수 영역을 대변하는 저항성분 R1은 연료극 분극 저항에 해당하였고 100Hz주파수 영역의 저항성분 R2는 공기극 분극 저항 성분, 그리고 10Hz이하 영역의 저항성분 R3는 전극을 통한 기체확산 저항성분으로 특히, 작동 조건인 공기 및 수소 분위기에서는 연료극 쪽 반응기체에 의한 기체확산 저항 성분임을 알 수 있었다. 전지성능 측정 결과 이 복합 공기극을 장착한 전지는 $800^{\circ}C$, 공기 및 산소 조건에서 각각 $0.55W/cm^2$ $1W/cm^2$의 높은 전지성능을 나타내었다. 전류전압 곡선은 기울기가 다른 두 구간으로 구분되었으며, 낮은 전류밀도 하에서 보이는 급격한 전압감소 구간은 공기극 분극저항이 주된 성능 저하의 원인인 반면, 높은 전류밀도 하에서 나타나는 완만한 전압 감소 구간은 전해질에 관련된 분극저항이 주된 성능 저하의 원인이었다.

특정 대상에 대한 개인 수준의 문화적 성향이 사용자 경험에 미치는 조절효과에 대한 실증적 연구: 미국, 독일, 러시아의 4개 디지털 기기 사용자를 대상으로 (An Empirical Study on How the Moderating Effects of Individual Cultural Characteristics towards a Specific Target Affects User Experience: Based on the Survey Results of Four Types of Digital Device Users in the US, Germany, and Russia)

  • Recently, due to the globalization of the IT(Information Technology) market, devices and systems designed in one country are used in other countries as well. This phenomenon is becoming the key factor for increased interest on cross-cultural, or cross-national, research within the IT area. However, as the IT market is becoming bigger and more globalized, a great number of IT practitioners are having difficulty in designing and developing devices or systems which can provide optimal experience. This is because not only tangible factors such as language and a country's economic or industrial power affect the user experience of a certain device or system but also invisible and intangible factors as well. Among such invisible and intangible factors, the cultural characteristics of users from different countries may affect the user experience of certain devices or systems because cultural characteristics affect how they understand and interpret the devices or systems. In other words, when users evaluate the quality of overall user experience, the cultural characteristics of each user act as a perceptual lens that leads the user to focus on a certain elements of experience. Therefore, there is a need within the IT field to consider cultural characteristics when designing or developing certain devices or systems and plan a strategy for localization. In such an environment, existing IS studies identify the culture with the country, emphasize the importance of culture in a national level perspective, and hypothesize that users within the same country have same cultural characteristics. Under such assumptions, these studies focus on the moderating effects of cultural characteristics on a national level within a certain theoretical framework. This has already been suggested by cross-cultural studies conducted by scholars such as Hofstede(1980) in providing numerical research results and measurement items for cultural characteristics and using such results or items as they increase the efficiency of studies. However, such national level culture has its limitations in forecasting and explaining individual-level behaviors such as voluntary device or system usage. This is because individual cultural characteristics are the outcome of not only the national culture but also the culture of a race, company, local area, family, and other groups that are formulated through interaction within the group. Therefore, national or nationally dominant cultural characteristics may have its limitations in forecasting and explaining the cultural characteristics of an individual. Moreover, past studies in psychology suggest a possibility that there exist different cultural characteristics within a single individual depending on the subject being measured or its context. For example, in relation to individual vs. collective characteristics, which is one of the major cultural characteristics, an individual may show collectivistic characteristics when he or she is with family or friends but show individualistic characteristics in his or her workplace. Therefore, this study acknowledged such limitations of past studies and conducted a research within the framework of 'theoretically integrated model of user satisfaction and emotional attachment', which was developed through a former study, on how the effects of different experience elements on emotional attachment or user satisfaction are differentiated depending on the individual cultural characteristics related to a system or device usage. In order to do this, this study hypothesized the moderating effects of four cultural dimensions (uncertainty avoidance, individualism vs, collectivism, masculinity vs. femininity, and power distance) as suggested by Hofstede(1980) within the theoretically integrated model of emotional attachment and user satisfaction. Statistical tests were then implemented on these moderating effects through conducting surveys with users of four digital devices (mobile phone, MP3 player, LCD TV, and refrigerator) in three countries (US, Germany, and Russia). In order to explain and forecast the behavior of personal device or system users, individual cultural characteristics must be measured, and depending on the target device or system, measurements must be measured independently. Through this suggestion, this study hopes to provide new and useful perspectives for future IS research.
