  • Microgrid as a unit component consisting a smart grid is an isolated system, which has a decentralized power supply system. This paper proposes an electrical isolation of the microgrid from the utiliy grid based on a power conditioning system, and also proposes an operation method maintaining the isolated state efficiently using diverse distributed energy resources such as renewable energy sources and energy storage system. The proposed system minimizes the influence of the grid connection on the internal load though a phase detection and synchrnoization to the utiligy grid and the microgrid can be stable even if the grid is failed.

A DSP controller was used to control the dc-dc and dc-ac converter operation for grid connection and power injection to the grid. The controller must also supervise the total PCS operation while communicating with the fuel cell system controller. A control method for parallel operation of dc-dc converters was proposed and verified. A 250kW prototype was successfully built and tested. Experimental performances are compared to minimum target requirements of the PCS for MCFC.

  • This paper presents the development of a fuel cell dynamic simulator using a programmable DC power supply and LabVIEW graphical user interface. The developed simulator closely describes the static and dynamic characteristics of an actual proton exchange membrance fuel cell (PEMFC). The experimental results are provided to verify the operation of the simulator. The developed simulator can be used as a convenient and economic alternative to an actual fuel cell for developing and testing a fuel cell power conditioning system.

  • In this paper, a new current based maximum power point tracking (CMPPT) method is proposed for a single phase photovoltaic power conditioning system and the current based MPPT modifies incremental conductance method. The current based MPPT method makes the entire control structure of the power conditioning system simple and uses an inherent current source characteristic of solar cell array. In addition, digital phase locked loop using an all pass filter is introduced to detect phase of grid voltage as well as peak voltage. Controllers about dc/dc boost converter, dc-link voltage, dc/ac inverter is designed for a coordinated operation. Furthermore, PI current control using a pseudo synchronous d-q transformation is employed for grid current control with unity power factor. 3kW prototype photovoltaic power conditioning system is built and its experimental results are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control schemes.

  • We developed a program, "CogenSim-$\mu$," to simulate the operation of micro-combined heat and power (${\mu}CHP$) system. The CogenSim-$\mu$ can reflect the variation of energy efficiency by handling the real-time loads (heat and power) fluctuation. The result obtained using this program was compared with the real operation of 30 kWe gas engine driven ${\mu}CHP$. It was found that the CogenSim-$\mu$ could predict the amount of generated-power, recovered-heat and consumed-fuel with the error less than 3%, and heat and power efficiency with the error less than 4%. The CogenSim-$\mu$ reconstructed the profile of on-off cycle, which represented the operation of a facility, with more than 93% accuracy. The CogenSim-$\mu$ can reflect the effects of various factors such as size of thermal storage tank, desired temperature of reservoir water, natural frequency of generator, etc. As a result, the CogenSim-$\mu$ can be used to optimize the ${\mu}CHP$ operation.

  • Increasing of the use nonlinear power electronics equipments, power conditioning systems have been researched and developed for many years to compensate the harmonic disturbances and the reactive power. The main function of power conditioning systems is to reduce harmonic distortions, since extensive surveys quantify the problems associated with electric networks having non-linear loads. The main function of power conditioner compensates the current instead of the voltage. Therefore the inverter used in power conditioner is mostley current controlled type. In this paper, the proposed current control algorithm is analized and discussed about how to design the controller which can apply power conditioning operation for grid-connective PV power system. And also proposed control system. To verify the proposed current control algorithm, a comprehensive evaluation with theoretical analysis, simulation results is presented.

  • This paper proposes a new power conditioning system for the fuel cell power generation, which consists of a LLC resonant DC-DC converter and 3-phase inverter. The LLC resonant converter boosts the fuel cell voltage of 26-48V up to 400V, using the hard-switching boost converter and the high-frequency ZVS half-bridge converter. The operation of proposed power conditioning system was verified through simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC software. The feasibility of hardware implementation was verified through experimental works with a laboratory prototype, which was built with 1.2kW PEM fuel-cell stack, 1kW LLC resonant converter, and 3kW PWM inverter. The proposed system can be utilized to commercialize a real interconnection system for the fuel-cell power generation.

  • As a result of the depletion of fossil fuels and environmental contamination, it has become important to use renewable energy. For the stable utilization of renewable energy sources, energy storage devices must be used. In addition, renewable and distributed power sources with energy storage devices must operate stably under grid-connected mode. This paper proposed dynamic response modeling for renewable power generation systems including a charger/discharger with an energy storage device in order to derive a method to guarantee stable operation while fully utilizing the energy from the energy storage device. In this paper, the principle operation and design guidelines of the proposed scheme are presented, along with a performance analysis and simulation results using MATLAB and PSIM. Finally, a hardware prototype of a 1kW power conditioning system with an energy storage device has been implemented for experimental verification of the proposed converter system.

  • This study proposes a coupled inductor method for the parallel operation of a power conditioning system (PCS). When primary and secondary currents flow in the same direction in a coupled inductor, total flux and inductance are cancelled; when currents flow in opposite directions, each flux becomes an individual inductor. These characteristics are applied in the parallel operation of a PCS. To connect at a grid code, abnormal current, which is barred under the grid connection code, is blocked by using a coupled inductor. A design based on the capacity and current duration time of a PCS is verified through hardware implementation. Experiment results show the effectiveness of variance reduction.
