In this paper, the optimal maintenance scheduling for turbine with considering maintenance replacement rate was proposed in order to reduce the maintenance cost during the whole period of operation, meanwhile keeping current reliability of turbine. The proposed method is only based on a few limited available data with various factors relating to maintenance replacement and repair of turbine. The proposed method will be adopted by Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc. from April in 2002 to determine the maintenance schedule of thermal power plants.
The 500 MW rated steam turbine model in coal fired power plant is developed to be used for validation and verification of controller rather than for the education of operator. The valve, steam turbine, reheater and generator are modeled and integrated into the simulator. And the data from the plant heat balance diagram are used for estimation of the model parameters together with actual operating data. It is found that the outputs of model such as pressure, temperature and speed are similar to the operating ones. So, it is expected that the developed model will play a very big role in controller development.
This paper introduces a wind turbine simulation system based on the IEC 61400-25 standard to simulate different kinds of wind turbines. A unified communication protocol was required for monitoring and control of wind turbines, because manufacturers had used their own protocols for their turbines. As a result of such an effort, the international standard IEC 61400-25 was established. To implement the schema of IEC 61400-25, the IEC61850 SCL was modified and applied to the simulation system, which enabled the system to be compatible with heterogeneous wind turbine information models. The developed simulation system can be used for interoperability tests with a new type of wind turbine information model.
Wind power is one of most promising renewable energy. The output capacity of large wind turbine has been increased for off-shore application. Number of installation of small wind turbine also has been increased for the stand-alone and off-grid application of remote area and recently small wind turbine equipped with lamp on the pole is used for street lamp. Maximum wind energy must be extracted by wind turbine within rated wind speed. Power must be controlled to protect the system such as blade, generator, and power system above the rated wind speed. In this paper, small wind power system of 800W rating for battery charging is implemented and output power control by furling system is verified at wind tunnel test.
This paper presents a modeling and simulation of a fuzzy controller for maximum power extraction of a grid-connected wind energy conversion system with a link of a rectifier and an inverter. It discusses the maximum power control algorithm for a wind turbine and proposes, in a graphical form, the relationships of wind turbine output, rotor speed, power coefficient, tip-speed ratio with wind speed when the wind turbine is operated under the maximum power control. The control objective is to always extract maximum power from wind and transfer the power to the utility by controlling both the pitch angle of the wind turbine blades and the inverter firing angle. Pitch control method is mechanically complicated, but the control performance is better than that of the stall regulation method. The simulation results performed on MATLAB will show the variation of generator's rotor angle and rotor speed, pitch angle, and generator output.
Turbine power control devices at a nuclear / thermoelectric power plant lead to failure by creating mechanical shocks and strong vibrations that are due to the strong elasticity of a spring and the inertia of the valve face during its rapid movement to block steam. To ensure durability of the turbine power control device, which is the main component in the power plant, it is necessary to develop a device that can prevent such vibrations. In this study, a cushion mechanism is added to the head of the hydraulic servo actuator, which is a turbine power control device. Moreover, the cushion mechanism, which includes various modifies shapes and orifices is investigated dynamically through modeling and simulations.
In this study, procedures, a power performance testing system of Wind Turbine System Research Center of Kangwon National University is introduced. Test prodedures and results are presented on a stand-alone vertical-axis 200W wind turbine manufactured by Geum-Poong Energy Inc.. Power performance test is performed according to IEC standard. The test results are compared with the power performance standard. Also, the effects of normalization and disturbed sectors are considered.
This paper presents the simulator for dynamic modeling of a MT(micro turbine) during start-up period. The simulator is implemented by modeling a dynamic power of main components of a MT including compressor, combustor and turbine. A modeling for a MT under steady state operation can be accurately built from thermodynamics analysis. But dynamic modeling during start-up period is very difficult because efficiency of main components is very low and the designed value has big error and nonlinear characteristics during start-up. In this paper, new method without using thermodynamics analysis during start-up is proposed for the simulator. The power models of main components are derived from analysis of the experimental operation data by test motoring using a electric starter under constant power output. The simulator is developed using MATLAB/Simulink. For constant power output control, sensorless vector inverter is designed and algorithms for starting from stall and method for controling a output power are proposed. The performance of developed simulator is verified by comparing experimental and simulation start-up results.

Tidal current energy is an important alternative energy resource among the various ocean energy resources available. The tidal currents in the South-Western sea of Korea can be utilized for the development of tidal current power generation. Tidal power generation can be beneficial for many fishing nurseries and nearby islands in the southwest region of Korea. Moreover, tidal power generation is necessary for promoting energy self-sufficient islands. As tidal currents are always available, power generation is predictable; thus, tidal power is a reliable renewable energy resource. The selection of an appropriate hydrofoil is important for designing a tidal current turbine. This study concentrates on the selection and numerical analysis of four different hydrofoils (MNU26, NACA63421, DU91_W2_250, and DU93_W_210LM). Blade element momentum theory is used for configuring the design of a 50 W class turbine rotor blade. The optimized blade geometry is used for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis with hexahedral numerical grids. Among the four blades, NACA63421 blade showed the maximum power coefficient of 0.45 at a tip speed ratio of 6. CFD analysis is used to investigate the power coefficient, pressure coefficient, and streamline distribution of a 50 W class horizontal axis tidal current turbine for different hydrofoils.
Combustion dynamics of a dry low NOx gas turbine have been measured by utilizing a dynamic pressure measurement system. The software part of the measurement system, implemented with a commercial general-purpose DASYLab version 5.6 code, basically acquires combustion dynamics signals, performs the FFT analysis, and displays the results. The gas turbine often experiences momentary combustion instability, especially when its combustion mode changes. It is found that the measurement system developed in the study may outperform the other commercial dynamic pressure measurement system. The developed system currently serves to monitor the combustion dynamics of the gas turbine.
