  • The studies of superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) for reduction of the fault current are actively underway in the worldwide. In this paper, we analyzed the characteristics of a new type SFCL using the conventional transformer and superconducting elements combined mutually. The secondary and third windings of this SFCL were connected the load and the superconducting element, respectively. The electric power was provided to load connected to secondary windings of the transformer in normal state of power system. On the other hand, when the fault occurred in power system, the fault current was limited by closing the line of third winding of the transformer. At this time, the ripple phenomenon of the fault was minimized by opening the fault line in secondary winding of a transformer in power system. The sensing of the fault state was performed by the CT(current transformer) and then turn-on and turn-off switching behavior of the SFCL was performed by the SCR(silicon-controlled rectifier). As a result, the proposed SFCL limited the fault current within a half-cycle efficiently. We confirmed that the fault current limitation rate was changed according to the winding ratio of a transformer.

  • The research of superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) for reduction of the fault current is actively underway in the worldwide. In this paper, we analyzed the characteristics of a SFCL using the transformer and superconducting elements combined mutually in accordance with the fault types. The structure of this SFCL was composed of the secondary and third windings of a transformer connected to the load and the superconducting element, respectively. The provided electric power flew into the load connected to the secondary winding of the transformer in normal state. On the other hand, when the fault occurred in power system, the fault current was limited by closing the line of third winding of the transformer. At this time, the effect of the fault was minimized by opening the fault line in secondary winding of a transformer in power system. The sensing of the fault state was performed by the current transformer(CT) and then turn-on and turn-off switching behavior of the secondary line in the transformer was performed by the silicon-controlled rectifier(SCR). As a result, the proposed SFCL limited the fault current within one-cycle efficiently. Also, the degradation of the superconducting element in the normal state was avoided.

  • The power transformer is one of the very important electric facilities in power systems. Recently, current differential relay is widely used to protect such power transformer But if inrush occurs in transformer, relay can be tripped by judging like internal fault. Therefore the correct discrimination between internal winding fault, inrush and overexcitation should be performed. This paper presents a new protective relaying algorithm which discriminates inrush, internal faults and overexcitation of transformer modelled using BCTRAN and HYSDAT of EMTP. Discrimination between internal winding fault and inrush is revealed in simulation within 1/2 cycle after fault. Accordingly, it is evaluated that the proposed algorithm has better discrimination characteristics in various cases thin the current relaying for protection of transformer.

  • Fault current in power system is expected to increase by demand of power capacity. Therefore, when the fault occurred, fault current was increased in the power system. Many studies have been progressed to limit the fault current. Superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is one of them which has been studied in worldwide. In this paper, we will analyze characteristics of a transformer-type SFCL by reclosing operation when the voltage increases. Twice opening times in the reclosing of circuit breaker were set as the 0.5 and 15 seconds, respectively. Turn's number of primary and secondary coils set 4:2 and we increased voltages from 120V to 280V for each experiment. By the current waveform, maximum fault current in second and third cycles was lowered when the voltage was increased. In the recovery waveform, recovery time was increased as the voltage was increased. The reason was that power burden of the SFCL increased when consumption power was increased, so the time to get back to SFCL took longer. We compared the characteristics of a resistive-type and transformer-type SFCL. As a result, we found that the fault current of a transformer-type was lower than resistive-type and recovery time of the SFCL was shorter. Consequently, transformer-type SFCL was more profitable for limitation of fault current and recovery time under the same condition for reclosing operation.

  • Power transformer is an important apparatus in transforming and delivering the power in a power system. It shows less accident ratio than other system apparatus, but once the accident occurs, it causes long-term operation stoppage and economic loss. It brings high bad spillover effects. Therefore, the role of protective relaying, which is to prevent internal fault a power transformer is highly important. This study proposed advanced algorithm that can clearly determine internal fault of the power transformer and magnetizing inrush, through numerical analysis by using the terminal voltage and input output current.

  • In transformer fault diagnosis, dissolved gas analysis (DGA) is been widely employed for a long period and numerous methods have been innovated to interpret its results. Still in some cases it fails to identify the corresponding faults. Due to the limitation of training data and non-linearity, the estimation of key-gas ratio in the transformer oil becomes more complicated. This paper presents Intuitionistic Fuzzy expert System (IFS) to diagnose several faults in a transformer. This revised approach is well suitable to diagnosis the transformer faults and the corresponding action to be taken. The proposed method is applied to an independent data of different power transformers and various case studies of historic trends of transformer units. It has been proved to be a very advantageous tool for transformer diagnosis and upkeep planning. This method has been successfully used to identify the type of fault developing within a transformer even if there is conflict in the results of AI technique applied to DGA data.

  • This paper presents hybrid expert system for diagnosis of electric power transformer faults. The expert system diagnose and detect faults in oil-filled power transformers based on dissolved gas analysis. As the preprocessing stage, fuzzy information theory is used to manage the uncertainty in transformer fault diagnosis using dissolved gas analysis. The Kohonen neural network takes the interim results by applying fuzzy informations theory as inputs, and performs the transformer fault diagnosis. The Proposed system tested gas records of power transformers from Korea Electric Power Corporation to verify the diagnosis performance of transformer faults.

  • A breakdown occurred in power transformer causes interruption of power transmission. Protective relay should be installed in transformer to detect such a fault. Protective relaying algorithm for transformer must be included a function to discriminate between winding fault and inrushing state. Recently, current differential relay is widely used to protect power transformer. However if inrush occurs in transformer, relay can be tripped by judging as internal fault. New algorithms are required in order to such problem. This study proposes a new protective relaying algorithm using Neuro-Fuzzy inference and wavelet. A variety of transformer transient states are simulated by BCTRAN and HYSDT in EMTP. D1 coefficients of differential current are obtained by wavelet transform. D1 coefficients and RMS of 3-phase primary voltage are used to make a target data and are trained by Nwo-Fuzzy algorithm which distinguishes correctly whether internal fault occurs or not within 1/2 after fault detection. It is evaluated that the results obtained by simulations can effectively protect a transformer by contact discriminating between winding fault and inrushing state.

  • We tried to combine a transformer with a superconducting element and investigated the current limiting characteristics. When a superconducting element was connected to third winding of the transformer, the fault current was limited to about 90 % effectively. The fault current and consumption power were able to be controlled by the turn's ratio of secondary and third windings. It gives flexibility of the rating of a transformer in the power grid. As a result, power burden of a superconducting element was reduced by the decrease of turn's ratio in third winding of a transformer. It was because the voltage behavior of a superconducting element was dependent on turn's ratio of a transformer while the current characteristic was independent.
