To know the speed performance of "ARAON" in Arctic ice field, the measurement of ice properties which is ice thickness & strength, snow depth and free board were performed on July 2010. The measuring method of nautical signals such as heading angle, power of engine, wind & current information etc. was described in this paper. The speed sea trials in ice were performed on the four different positions with different ice properties and engine powers because the uniform level ice is not detected in the Chukchi Sea. The test field was partially constrained ice floe with hummocks and it was superposed with small broken ice pieces each other. All of the measured ice properties were compared and evaluated according to the results of sea trial. The relations between speed, ice thickness, strength and power were summarized. Consequently according to the sea trial results, the speed of ARAON is 2.78knots at the 2.49m ice thickness with 6.55MW engine power.
This research presents an innovative integrated ethanol solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system designed for applications in marine vessels. The system incorporates an exhaust gas heat recovery mechanism. The high-temperature exhaust gas produced by the SOFC is efficiently recovered through a sequential process involving a gas turbine (GT), a regenerative system, steam Rankine cycles, and a waste heat boiler (WHB). A comprehensive thermodynamic analysis of this integrated SOFC-GT-SRC-WHB system was performed. A simulation of this proposed system was conducted using Aspen Hysys V12.1, and a genetic algorithm was employed to optimize the system parameters. Thermodynamic equations based on the first and second laws of thermodynamics were utilized to assess the system's performance. Additionally, the exergy destruction within the crucial system components was examined. The system is projected to achieve an energy efficiency of 58.44% and an exergy efficiency of 29.43%. Notably, the integrated high-temperature exhaust gas recovery systems contribute significantly, generating 1129.1 kW, which accounts for 22.9% of the total power generated. Furthermore, the waste heat boiler was designed to produce 900.8 kg/h of superheated vapor at 170 ℃ and 405 kP a, serving various onboard ship purposes, such as heating fuel oil and accommodations for seafarers and equipment.

The paradigm that ships are navigated by means of analog navigation devices and caption's experiences is shifted to that ships can be navigated by digital and autonomous navigation systems due to the rapid development of electronics and communication technologies. Hence, all systems deployed in a ship are automated and integrated since corresponding ship systems are not individually operated but integrated and managed under common operating system. In this paper, we overview recent research projects targeted for digitally integrated ships (referred to as digital ships), outline IEC 61162 series, specifying digital interface standards for digital ships, and finally present several issues for further improvement of the IEC 61162 series. In addition, we broadly categorize digital ships into three systems consisting of multiple sub-systems, including a navigation system, a power system, and a automation system in the aspect of operation and function. Corresponding interfacing range and method, as well as interface specification and data types of one system in a digital ship are also described according to sub-systems, respectively.

The oceans are an untapped resource, capable of making a major contribution to our future energy needs. In the search for a non polluting renewable energy source, there is a push to find an economical way to harness energy from the ocean. Tidal stream is one of ocean energy form that is being investigated as potential source for power generation. Tidal current turbines are therefore designed as conversion machinery to generate power from tidal currents. A study on energy extraction from tidal currents is presented in this paper.
For vessels operating in the cold climate regions, the ballast water inside or hopper tanks above the waterline may be frozen, starting at the top of the tank and at the side walls. Therefore, countermeasures against freeze-up of the ballast tank such as air-bubbling system, hot steam injecting system, heating coil system and water circulating system are taken to prevent freeze-up phenomenon; however, there are no rigorous investigations of anti-freezing to examine the effectiveness and validity of systems against freeze-up of the ballast tank, in which the temperatures are about $-25^{\circ}C$ (ambient air temperature) and $0^{\circ}C$ (sea water), respectively. In this paper, to ensure reasonable specifications for cold regions if the measures from the above-mentioned systems against freeze-up are effective, the phenomenon of ballast tank freeze-up is simulated and discussed in low temperature conditions. With the results using the commercial CFD code, CFX 14, the most cost-effective solution is conducted to prevent being frozen along the outer surface.

For the past few years, the concern for clean energy has been greatly increased. Ocean thermal Energy Conversion(OTEC) power plants are studied as a viable option for the supply of clean energy. In this study, we examined the thermodynamic performance of the OTEC power system for the production of electric power. Computer simulation programs were developed under the same condition and various working fluids for closed Rankine cycle, regenerative cycle, Kalina cycle, open cycle, and hybrid cycle. The results show that the regenerative cycle showed the best system efficiency. And then we examined the thermodynamic performance of regenerative cycle OTEC power system using the condenser effluent from Uljin nuclear power plant instead of the surface water. The highest system efficiency of the condition was 4.55% and the highest net power was 181 MW.

Plate heat exchanger are being applied in the field of OTEC (ocean thermal energy conversion) and SWAC (seawater air conditioning) system. This study is to analyze numerically the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics by using solid works flow simulation in order to offer optimum design data of plate heat exchanger. Plater heat exchanger proposed in this study is four types. The geometric design parameters of plate heat exchanger are a channel space, a flow orientation, a plate array, the flowrate of working fluid and so on. The main results for numerical analysis of plate heat exchangers are summarized as follows. Heat transfer performance for the channel space of 2.4 mm shows the highest value compared to other spaces. And, the Type 4 plate heat exchanger in Table 2 is the highest performance. From the pressure drop characteristics of plate heat exchanger, the channel space of 3.2 mm shows the lowest value. And Type 1 plate heat exchanger in Table 2 is the lowest pressure drop.

In Korea, five major ports have been designated as sulfur oxide emission control areas to reduce air pollutant emissions, in accordance with Article 10 of the "Special Act on Port Air Quality" and Article 32 of the "Ship Pollution Prevention Regulations". As regulations against vessel-originated air pollutants (such as PM, CO2, NOx, and SOx) have been strengthened, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries(MOF) enacted rules that newly built public ships should adopt eco-friendly propulsion systems. However, particularly in diesel-electric hybrid propulsion systems, the demand for precise control schemes continues to grow as the fuel saving rate significantly varies depending on the control strategy applied. The conventional Power Take In-Power Take Off(PTI - PTO) mode control adopts a rule-based strategy, but this strategy is applied only in the low-load range and PTI mode; thus, an additional method is required to determine the optimal fuel consumption point. The proposed control method is designed to optimize fuel consumption by applying the equivalent consumption minimization strategy(ECMS) to the PTI - PTO mode by considering the characteristics of the specific fuel oil consumption(SFOC) of the engine in a diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system. To apply this method, a specific fishing vessel model operating on the Korean coast was selected to simulate the load operation environment of the ship. In this study, a 10.2% reduction was achieved in the MATLAB/SimDrive and SimElectric simulation by comparing the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of the ship to which the conventional rule-based strategy was applied and that to which the ECMS was applied.

The small coastal vessel registered in Korea, small coastal vessels with a gross tonnage of 10 tons or less account for 94.6 % and among them, aged vessels over 16 years age indicate 40.6 %. In order to reduce GHG emissions from small coast vessels, discussions are underway to replace aging ships' propulsion units with eco - friendly propulsion facilities, and the electric propulsion ship is emerging as one of the measures. The electric propulsion system using the DFE rectifier, which was applied in the conventional large commercial vessel, was effective in reducing the harmonics and improving the DC output voltage of the DC link stage, but it occupied a large volume and caused an increase in the overall system price. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an electric propulsion system using AFE rectifier with a small volume of system that can be applied to a small coastal vessel. In order to analyze the effectiveness of the overall system, the load profile was applied to obtain accurate and rapid speed tracking performance of the propulsion motor affected by the speed load. In addition, the power factor and total harmonic distortion factor of the voltage and current on the improved power output side are derived through simulation.
