  • For many industrial processes there are good static models used for process design and steady state operation. By using system identification techniques, it is possible to obtain black-box models with reasonable complexity that describe the system well in specific operating conditions [1]. But black-box models using inductive modeling(IM) is not suitable for model based control because they are only valid for specific operating conditions. Thus we need to use deductive modeling(DM) for a wide operating range. Furthermore, deductive modeling is several merits: First, the model is possible to be modularized. Second, we can increase and decrease the model complexity. Finally, we are able to use model for plant design. Power plant must be able to operate well at dramatic load change and consider safety and efficiency. This paper proposes a simplified nonlinear model of an industrial boiler, one of component parts of a power plant, by DM method and applies optimal control to the model.

  • When controling combustion air flow in coal fired power plant the furnace safety must be considered first prior to plant efficiency. therefore it is very important to set air flow demand exactly for safe operation and maintenance. This paper analyze air flow control loop in power plant and introduce the method to improve dynamic response time. Simulation result shows this scheme is adoptable and provide better performance.

  • In power plant operations, sensor values often exhibit erroneous values due to their failures or the intrusions of various noises. However, most of the power plant monitoring and fault diagnosis systems perform their tasks based on the assumptions that the collected sensor values are correct all the times. These assumptions, which are not valid, often lead to serious consequences such as power plant trips. In this paper, we propose a power plant sensor value validation technique that can utilize the relationships existing among the sensor values as the sensor redundancy. The proposed technique is applied to the flow meters installed along boiler feed water systems of a typical tubular type boiler thermal power plant and shows a good potential of future applications.

  • Several methods have been developed to predict the rupture time of the boiler tubes in thermal power plant. However, existing life prediction methods give very conservative value at operating stress of power plant and rupture strain cannot be well estimated. Therefore, in this study, rupture time and strain prediction method accounting for creep, corrosion and heat transfer is newly proposed and compared with the current research results. The creep damage evolves by continuous cavity nucleation and constrained cavity growth. The corrosion damage evolves by steam side and fire side corrosion. The results showed good correlation between the theoretically predicted rupture time and the current research results. And rupture strain may be well estimated by using the proposed method.

  • This paper proposes an auto-tuning method of feedforward signal in boiler control of thermal power plants by using the neural network. The neural network produces an optimal feedforward signal by tuning the weights of the network. The weights are adapted effectively by using the teaching signal of PI control output. The proposed method was evaluated based on a detailed simulator which expressed non-linear characteristics of the 600 MW actual thermal power plant at load chaning operations, showed effectiveness in the learning of the weights of the neural network, and gave an accurate control performance in the temperature control of the system. Through the evaluation, the proposed method was proved to be effectively applicable to the actual thermal plants as the automatic adjustment tool.

  • It was analyzed the causes of boiler tube rupture due to a degradation and corrosion on the boiler tubes in fossil power plant. The experiments were carried out among samples taken from the operating facilities. The result were analyzed based on experimental results from mechanical strength, microstructure observation, and hardness measurement in order to determine the cause of local rupture on boiler tubes. In general, 2.25Cr-1Mo steel generates carbides, it is coarsened, its ductility and strength abruptly decreased as degradation is in progress, In order to confirm this phenomenon, we observed changes of the mount of Cr and Mo of carbide by carrying out EDX chemical composition analysis. The amount of Cr and Mo in the degraded material or service exposed material gradually increased the amount of Mo but initially they were almost maintained at the same amount. Furthermore, we observed that the carbide become coarsened both in the grain and at the grain boundary. Tensile test was carried out to measure a material hardness and to recognize a drop-off of hardness. Overall result for tensile strength and hardness turned out to be lower than new material and mechanical strength and hardness was degraded as the material degradation was in progress.

  • Heat and mass balance process modeling has been conducted for a coal-firing power plant to be used as a testbed facility for development of various plant systems and equipment. As the material and design of the boiler tube bundle and fuel conversion to the biomass have become major concerns, the process modeling is required to incorporate those features in its calculation. The simulation cases for two different generation load show the satisfying results compared to the operational data from the actual system. Based on the established process conditions, the hypothetical case using wood pellet has also been simulated. Additional calculations for the tube bundle has been conducted regarding the changes in the tube material and design.

  • An attemperator is a part of the 4-stage superheater in the boiler system of the thermal power plant. The attemperator receives the over-heated steam and makes the steam with proper temperature by adjusting the control valve of the cold steam. In this paper, the attemperator is modeled considering physical point of view and the linearized model is derived for the control purpose. To overcome the integral windup phenomenon due to the opening limitation of the control valve, an anti-windup PI controller is proposed to the attemperator and compared with the PI controller operated in the thermal power plant in view of control performance.

  • Because of the complexity, nonlinearity and long-time delay of power plant, the star-up operation of a fossil power plant is very difficult to automate. So the start-up operation is always carried out by the skilled human operators, who utilize their knowledges and experiences for the predesigned start-up schedules and procedures. In this paper, a fuzzy logic controller is designed for the start-up operation of the power plant. And the operators experiences are modeled in terms of fuzzy sets and variables. To validate the controller, a drum-type boiler of the Seoul Power Plant is constructed via the signal flow diagram. Using the model, the suggested automatic start-up operation is verified, and the results are also presented.

  • In the power plant facility which use soft coal as a power source the fan pitch blade control hydraulic actuator is used to control the inlet and outlet gas to regulate the internal pressure of the furnace and control the frequence. Sometimes malfunctions of this equipment lead to the decline of boiler thermal efficiency and unexpected power plant trip. In order to localize the fan pitch blade control hydraulic actuator specially for the 500MW large scale boiler, Analysis and modelling of the system is carried out mathematically. The responses of the system are examined by using matlab simulation fur the variation of the major parameters in view of reverse engineering. Consequently the validity of the established parameters are examined.
