The traction motors in electric multiple unit (EMU) trains are powered by AC-DC-AC converters, and the DC link voltage is generated by single phase PWM converters, with a fluctuation component under twice the frequency of the input catenary AC grid, which causes fluctuations in the motor torque and current. Traditionally, heavy and low-efficiency hardware LC resonant filters parallel in the DC side are adopted to reduce the ripple effect. In this paper, an analytical model of the ripple phenomenon is derived and analyzed in the frequency domain, and a ripple control scheme compensating the slip frequency of rotor vector control systems without a hardware filter is applied to reduce the torque and current ripple amplitude. Then a relatively simple discretization method is chosen to discretize the algorithm with a high discrete accuracy. Simulation and experimental results validate the proposed ripple control strategy.

All-optical signal processing is expected to offer advantages in speed and power consumption against over electronics signal processing. It has a potential to solve the bottleneck issues of ultra-high speed communication network nodes. All-optical serial-to-parallel and parallel-to-serial data converters would make it possible to easily process the serial data information of a high-speed optical packet without optical-to-electronic-to-optical data conversion. In this paper, we explain the principle of simple and easily expandable all-optical serial-to-parallel and parallel-to-serial data converters based on Mach-Zehnder interferometers. We experimentally demonstrate these data converters at 10Gbit/s serial data rate. They are useful all-optical devices for the all-optical implementations of label decoding, self-routing, control of variable packets, bit-wise logical operation, and data format conversion.

Conventional two-level Zeta converters have drawbacks, such as high voltage stresses and high current ripples. To address these problems, a three-level Zeta converter that uses a couple inductor is proposed in this study. The proposed converter utilizes the three-level power switching circuit to reduce the voltage stresses and inductor current ripples. Compared with the conventional converter, the proposed converter can improve power efficiency and power density. A 500 W prototype circuit is used to verify the operation and performance of the proposed converter via experimental results.
Based on the standards that limit the harmonic pollution of electronic systems, the use of PFC converters is mandatory. In this paper, a new resonant bridgeless PFC converter is introduced. By eliminating the input bridge diodes, the efficiency is improved. Moreover, soft switching conditions for all of the semiconductor elements are achieved without adding any extra switches. As a result, high efficiency is attained. The proposed converter is analyzed and the theoretical and simulation results of the proposed converter are presented. In order to verify the validity of the analysis, a 40 w prototype converter is implemented and experimental results are presented. The experimental results show that high efficiency is attained while achieving a high power factor.
In this paper, a voltage control method based on DQ transformation and Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) for a single phase three-level converter is proposed. This control method is designed to use DC values instead of using instantaneous values of current which are usually used in single-phase application, so that it results in a fast and robust voltage control response. Simulation results demonstrate the validity of the control strategies.
Aiming at the problems of large dv/dt and di/dt in traditional single-ended converters and high electromagnetic interference (EMI) noise levels, a single-ended isolated converter using the secondary resonance technique is proposed in this paper. In the proposed converter, the voltage stress of the main power switch can be reduced and the voltage across the output diode is clamped to the output voltage when compared to the conventional flyback converter. In addition, the peak current stress through the main power switch can be decreased and zero current switching (ZCS) of the output diode can be achieved through the resonance technique. Moreover, the EMI noise coupling path and an equivalent model of the proposed converter topology are presented through the operational principle of the proposed converter. Analysis results indicate that the common mode (CM) EMI noise and the differential mode (DM) EMI noise of such a converter are deduced since the frequency spectra of the equivalent controlled voltage sources and controlled current source are decreased when compared with the traditional flyback converter. Furthermore, appropriate parameter selection of the resonant circuit network can increase the equivalent impedance in the EMI coupling path in the low frequency range, which further reduces the common mode interference. Finally, a simulation model and a 60W experimental prototype of the proposed converter are built and tested. Experimental results verify the theoretical analysis.

Recently, electric power systems have been operating with tight margins and have reached their operational limits. Many researchers consider a microgrid as one of the best solutions to relieve that problem. The microgrid is generally powered by renewable energies that are connected through power converters. In contrast to the rotational machines in the conventional power plants, the converters do not have physical rotors, and therefore they do not have rotational inertia. Consequently, a stand-alone microgrid has no inertia when it is powered by the only converter-based-generators (CBGs). As a result, the relationship between power and frequency is not valid, and the grid frequency cannot represent the power balance between the generator and load. In this paper, a superconducting flywheel energy storage system (SFESS) is applied to an inertia-free stand-alone (IFSA) microgrid. The SFESS accelerates or decelerates its rotational speed by storing or releasing power, respectively, based on its rotational inertia. Then, power in the IFSA microgrid can be balanced by measuring the rotor speed in the SFESS. This method does not have an error accumulation problem, which must be considered for the state of charge (SOC) estimation in the battery energy storage system (BESS). The performance of the proposed method is verified by an electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation.
This paper proposes a novel active damping scheme to suppress LCL-filter resonance with only grid-current feedback control in grid-connected voltage-source converters. The idea comes from the concept of the model reference adaptive control (MRAC). A detailed theoretical derivation is given, and the effectiveness of this method is explained based on its physical nature. According to the control structure of this method, the active damping compensator, which is essentially a second order resonant integrator (SORI) filter, provides an effective solution to damp LCL resonance and to eliminate the need for additional sensors. Compared with extra feedback methods, the cost and complexity are reduced. A straightforward tuning procedure for the active damping method has been presented. A stability analysis is illustrated in the discrete domain while considering a one-step delay. Finally, experimental results are presented to validate the analysis and to demonstrate the good performance of the proposed method.
A current balance problem exists in multi-phase LLC converters due to the resonant parameter tolerance. This paper presents a current balancing method for interleaved three-phase half bridge LLC converters. This method regulates the phase shift angle of the driving signals between the three phases based on a converter with a floating Y-connection. The floating midpoint voltage has different influences on each phase current and makes the three-phase current balance performance better than midpoint non-floating systems. Phase shift control between modules can further regulate the midpoint voltage. Then three phase current sharing is realized without adding extra components. The current distributions in a midpoint non-floating system and a midpoint floating system are compared. Then the principle and implementation of the proposed control strategy are analyzed in detail. A 3kW prototype is built to verify the validity and feasibility of the proposed method.
Due to the inherent feedforward of load current, capacitor current (CC) control shows a fast transient response that makes it suitable for the power supplies used in various portable electronic devices. However, considering the effect of the outer voltage loop, the stable range of the duty-cycle is significantly diminished in CC controlled buck converters. To investigate the stability effect of the outer voltage loop on buck converters, a CC controlled buck converter with a proportion-integral (PI) compensator is taken as an example, and its second-order discrete-time model is established. Based on this model, the instability caused by the duty-cycle is discussed with consideration of the outer voltage loop. Then the dynamical effects of the feedback gain of the PI compensator and the equivalent series resistance (ESR) of the output capacitor on the CC controlled buck converter with a PI compensator are studied. Furthermore, the design-oriented closed-loop stability criterion is derived. Finally, PSIM simulations and experimental results are supplied to verify the theoretical analyses.
