According to the government's policy to demonstrate and expand the renewable energy sources, distributed generators such as PV and WP are installed and operated in distribution systems. However, there are many issues related to power quality problems including over voltage and under voltage of customers. In order to overcome these problems, the electric power company have installed a step voltage regulator (SVR) in primary feeders interconnected with distributed generators, and also have established the technical guidelines for the distributed generators to stabilize the customer voltages in distribution systems. However, it is difficult to maintain the customer voltages within allowable limit. Therefore, this paper reviews the problems of voltage control by SVR in a distribution systems interconnected with a large amount of PV systems, and proposes characteristics of operating range and voltage control limit of the small hydropower generators. Also, with the estimation of the influence to the power system voltages from the voltage control mode of generators, this paper proposes the optimal voltage control algorithm of the small hydropower generators. By programming the proposed algorithm into control simulator of exciter, it is confirmed that the proposed algorithm can contribute the voltage stabilization in distribution systems interconnected with large scaled PV systems.
Utilities are trying to install the equipment of high quality to avoid deterioration of supply reliability. In addition, many sectionalizing switches which can decrease the total outage value for a fault are installed for the same reason. Therefore, utilities are interested in stun dards and criteria for installing switches to optimize the total cost on distribution systems. The affect of sectionalizing switches installed on distribution feeder is gradually decreased because the failure rate on distribution feeder is decreased. Also the automation for distribution systems is widely applied for the efficient operation. Therefore, the renewal for installation standards of sectionalizing switches Is required to reflect the current operation situation. The variable data is used to consider the KEPCO's real situation of distribution feeder as follows; the feeder capacity, connecting rate, feeder length, failure rate of distribution feeder, the failure rate of switches, perception time of feeder fault, the restoration time for a faulted section, the transfer time to other feeders, and the switching time. In this study, We propose equations which can determine the number of sectionalizing switches for minimizing the outage and switch installation cost.
Distribution system is a critical link between customer and utility. The control of power loss is the main factor which decides the performance of the distribution system. There are two methods such as (i) distribution system reconfiguration and (ii) inclusion of capacitor banks, used for controlling the real power loss. Considering the improvement in voltage profile with the power loss reduction, later method produces better performance than former method. This paper presents an advanced evolutionary algorithm for capacitor inclusion for loss reduction. The conventional sensitivity analysis is used to find the optimal location for the capacitors. In order to achieve a better approximation for the current candidate solution, Opposition based Differential Evolution (ODE) is introduced. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is validated through 10, 33, 34 and85-bus radial distribution systems.
The authors have studied on the application of IEC 60364-4-44 to Korean electrical installations of buildings from 2004 sponsored by Korean ministry of commerce, industry and energy and the test field is established in K.E.R.I. (Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute). This paper presents the summary results of establishment of test field and analysis for the application of IEC 60364 in Korea. IEC 60364-4-44 provides rules for the protection against the effects of conducted and radiated disturbances on electrical installations. Especially this standard deals with the protection of low voltage facility against the ground fault in the high voltage side of power distribution system. Many countries define the regulations on the use and production of electrical facilities based on their own power system and technical references which are considered to be suitable for them. The background of circuit of IEC 60364-4-44 is based on the ungrounded system as most of European countries. However, since Korean electric power distribution system is based on multi-grounding system different from European system, it is necessary to evaluate or prove the effect of the IEC 60364-4-44 for introducing and applying it to the domestic grounding system as a Korean standard. This paper presents the establishment of test field to get background data to introduce the IEC 60364-4-44 and to evaluate the standard is applicable to domestic rule for the protection against ground fault through the related test
This paper presents a scheme for the interconnection of dispersed generator systems(DGs) based on load .unbalance and load model in composite distribution systems. Groups of each individual load model consist of residential, industrial, commercial, official and agricultural load. The unbalance is involved with many single-phase line segment. . Voltage profile improvement and system loss minimization by installation of DGs depend greatly on how they are placed and operated in the distribution systems. So, DGs can reduce distribution real power losses and replace large-scale generators if they are placed appropriately in the distribution systems. The main idea of solving fuzzy goal programming is to transform the original objective function and constraints into the equivalent multi-objectives functions with fuzzy sets to evaluate their imprecise nature for the criterion of power loss minimization, the number or total capacity of DGs and the bus voltage deviation, and then solve the problem using genetic algorithm. The method proposed is applied to IEEE 13 bus and 34 bus test systems to demonstrate its effectiveness.
Most of the loads in industrial power distribution systems are balanced and connected to three wires power systems. However, in the user power distribution systems, most of the loads are single & three phase and unbalanced, generating a large amount of non-characteristic harmonics. With the advent of power electronics and proliferation of non-linear loads in industrial power applications, power harmonics and their effects on power quality are a topic of concern. Harmonics by the unbalance voltage and non-linear loads, cause the increase of machine loss and heating. In order to allow current harmonic compensation, a filter must be installed. This paper describes the performance of passive filter under the voltage unbalance and non-linear load.

Recently, the operation of power distribution systems has become more difficult because the peak demand load is increasing continuously and the daily load factor is getting worse and worse. Also, the consideration of deregulation and global environment in electric power industry is required. In order to overcome these problems, a study on the planning and operation in distribution systems of dispersed generating sources such as fuel cell systems, photovoltaic systems and wind power systems has been performed energetically. This study presents a method for determining an optimal operation strategy of dispersed co-generating sources, especially fuel cell systems, in the case of both only electric power supply and thermal supply as well as electric power supply. In other words, the optimal operation of these sources can be determined easily by the principle of equal incremental fuel cost and the thermal merits is evaluated quantitatively through Kuhn-Tucker's optimal conditions. In order to select the optimal locations of those sources, an priority method using the comparison of total cost at the peak load time interval is also presented. The validity of the proposed algorithms is demonstrated using a model system.
Direct current(DC) systems have recently attracted attention due to the increase in DC loads and distributed generations, such as renewable energy sources. Among these technologies, there has been much research into DC distribution systems or DC microgrids. Within this body of research, the main topics have been about optimum control and operation methods in terms of improving power efficiency. When DC systems are controlled and operated using power electronic devices such as converters, it is necessary to design and analyze them by considering the power electronics sections. For this reason, we propose a scalable DC system analysis algorithm, which considers various system configurations depending on the operating mode and location of the converter. The algorithm consists of power flow fault current calculations, and the results of the algorithm can be used for designing DC systems. The algorithm is implemented using MATLAB with defined input and output data. The verification of the algorithm is mainly performed using ETAP software, and the accuracy of the algorithm analysis can be confirmed through the results.
