A lot of research is being done on metal materials to improve the lifespan of molded parts. As a result, excellent mold materials have been developed that withstand high hardness at high temperatures and frictional heat generated from high-speed cutting. In this study, the press mold life of powder high-speed tool steel and general high-speed tool steel was compared. Powdered high-speed steel is composed of alloying elements such as tungsten, maldividene, cobalt, chromium, and vanadium in steel, which improves wear resistance compared to high-hardness and high-speed tool steels. The mold parts of both steel types were manufactured in the same way from heat treatment to machining, and the powder high-speed tool steel was 66HRC and the high-speed tool steel was 61HRC. As a result of the experiment, it was observed that the number of punching of powder high-speed tool steel was improved by 40-50%, and powder high-speed tool steel had fewer impurities, uniform texture, and excellent surface structure. It has a microscopic structure.
P/M high speed steel (1.26% C, 4.42% Cr, 6.54% W, 4.92% Mo, 3.21 % V, 8.77% Co, bal. Fe) was applied to hot former die. It showed that the die life became 2.7 times higher than that of cast/wrought SKH 55 tool steel which is commercially used. The increase of die life was corresponding to the improved hardness and transverse rupture strength of PM high speed steel due to the finer grain and carbide as well as the uniform carbide distribution. The P/M high speed steel with the promoted die life could be an alternative to the conventional SKH55.
P/M high speed steels with various Co contents were fabricated by gas atomization and Canning/HIP process. As Co content in P/M high speed steel increased, hardness, transverse rupture strength and yield strength in compressive testing increased due to solid solution hardening of Co in matrix. Especially, PM high speed steels with Co have high deformation resistance to repeated compressive loading.
In metal cutting at the tool-chip interface, friction generates considerable amount of heat. Thus, the knowledge of wear properties of cutting tool material in high temperature has been as one of important factors in need of clarification. The authors presented the wear properties of 5%Co-5%V-1%Nb high speed steel, fabricated by powder metallurgy, in room temperature in previous articles. The objective of this paper is to clarify the effects of temperature on its wear properties. Wear tests in sliding conditions under various temperatures have been conducted using the pin-on-disc type wear test machine. The results indicate that the wear properties of 5%Co-5%V-1%Nb high speed steel in high temperature as well as in room temperature are excellent. It may be deduced that the oxide layer formed on worn surface at high temperature is stable enough to prevent wear due to the high temperature strength of its matrix.
In order to evaluate the effect of Nb on wear properties of high speed steel(HSS) by powder metallurgy, niobium-alloyed HSS have been prepared by adding 0%, 1%, 3% and 5%Nb to HSS of 6%W-5%Mo-4 %Cr-5%V-5%Co. Sliding wear tests were conducted at various sliding speed conditions under the constant pressure using a pin-on-disc type machine. The results of this study show that the wear resistance of HSS by powder metallurgy was increased by the addition of Nb within the range of sliding speed used in this experimental study. However, the amount of Nb did not improve the wear resistance. It may be due to the thermal stability of carbide and high temperature properties of the matrix containing Nb comparing to that without Nb.
The effect of tempering temperature on the three point bending fatigue behavior of a P/M high speed steel JYPS-23 (1.28% C, 4.20% Cr, 6.40% W, 5.00% Mo, 3.10% V, bal. Fe) was investigated. The number of cycles to failure of the specimen austenitized at $1175^{\circ}C$ drastically increased with increasing tempering temperature. As tempering temperature increased from 500 to $620^{\circ}C$, the volume fraction and average size of carbides (MC or M6C) did not significantly changed, while hardness decreased drastically. The reduced hardness is due to the softening of matrix, which increased the resistance of the fatigue crack propagation. For a practical application, powder compacting test were also conducted with the P/M high speed steel punches tempered at 500, 580, and $620^{\circ}C$. The number of compacting cycles to failure of the punches also increased with increasing tempering temperature.
Direct energy deposition (DED) is an additive manufacturing technique that involves the melting of metal powder with a high-powered laser beam and is used to build a variety of components. In recent year, it can be widely used in order to produce hard, wear resistant and/or corrosion resistant surface layers of metallic mechanical parts, such as dies and molds. For the purpose of the hardfacing to achieve high wear resistance and hardness, application of high speed steel (HSS) can be expected to improve the tool life. During the DED process using the high-carbon steel, however, defects (delamination or cracking) can be induced by rapid solidification of the molten powder. Thus, substrate preheating is generally adopted to reduce the deposition defect. While the substrate preheating ensures defect-free deposition, it is important to select the optimal preheating temperature since it also affects the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties. In this study, AISI M4 powder was deposited on the AISI 1045 substrate preheated at different temperatures (room temperature to $500^{\circ}C$). In addition, the micro-hardness distribution, cooling rates, and microstructures of the deposited layers were investigated in order to observe the influence of the substrate preheating on the mechanical and metallurgical properties.
The mechanical characteristics of the high speed steel by Powder metallurgy Process (PM-HSS) has been reported to improve with several alloying constituents, such as high carbon, vanadium and cobalt. In this paper, sliding wear test has been conducted using a pin-on-disc machine for three PM-HSS which contains 0%, 5% and 12% cobalt respectively, in order to evaluate the effect of cobalt on wear properties of PM-HSS. The results of this study showed that the wear resistance of PM-HSS has been increased by the addition of cobalt on the range of experimental friction velocities. When compared with the effect of addition of cobalt, the wear resistance of PM-HSS with 5% cobalt has been found to be superior to that of PM-HSS with 12% cobalt.

Based on the comparison of structures and properties of the HS6-5-2 high speed steels made with the powder injection moulding method, pressureless forming, compacting and sintering, and commercial steels made with the ASEA-STORA method, fine carbides spread evenly in the steel matrix were found in the structure of all tested high-speed steels in the sintered state. The steels made with the pressureless forming method are characteristic of the lowest sintering temperature and the highest density, resulting from the high carbon concentration coming from the binding agent degradation.

Powder metallurgy(P/M) process has been used for the production of high performance high-speed steels. P/M high speed steel has more uniform and fine microstructure than those of conventional wrought products. Therefore, it offers distinct advantages over conventional tool steels. The superior uniformity of composition and fine microstrucure lead to excellent toughness and less distortion during heat treatment, which in turn can reduce total grinding costs and provides other benefits, such as uniform hardness and increased tool life. From these reasons, milling, hole machining, broaching, and gear manufacturing tools are major applications of P/M high-speed steels. In this research, we evaluated tool wear of flat endmill which is made of P/M high-speed steel from the view point of cutting tool performance.
