  • In this research, a new method for consolidation of Al-20wr%Si powders using a magnetic pulsed compaction (MPC) was introduced. A wide Range of experimental studies were carried out to characterize the mechanical properties and microstructure of the MPCed materials by means of SEM, TEM and tensile test. It was found that the effective properties like higher strength and full density were achieved while maintaining a fine microstructure. Consolidated bulk by MPC showed higher density without any crack than that of the general process. With increasing the number of MPC compaction, the density and mechanical properties were also greatly improved.

  • In the present study, Zr-base metallic glass(MG)/diamond composites are fabricated using a combination of gas-atomization and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The densification behaviors of mixtures of soft MG and hard diamond powders during consolidation process are investigated. The influence of mixture characteristics on the densification is discussed and several mechanism explaining the influence of diamond particles on consolidation behaviour are proposed. The experimental results show that consolidation is enhanced with increasing diamond/Metallic Glass(MG) size ratio, while the diamond fraction is fixed.

  • Using Spark Plasma Sintering process (SPS), consolidation behavior of gas atomized $Mg_{97}Zn_1Y_2$ alloys were investigated via examining the microstructure and evaluating the mechanical properties. In the atomized ahoy powders, fine $Mg_{12}YZn$ particles were homogeneously distributed in the ${\alpha}-Mg$ matrix. The phase distribution was maintained even after SPS at 723 K, although $Mg_{24}Y_5$ particles were newly precipitated by consolidating at 748 K. The density of the consolidated bulk Mg-Zn-Y alloy was $1.86g/cm^3$. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation were varied with the consolidation temperature.

  • N-Type $SbI_3$ doped $95%Bi_2Te_3+5%\;Bi_2Se_3$ compounds were newly fabricated by the combination of gas atomization process and Magnetic Pulsed Compaction process. The thermoelectric properties of the MPCed bulks according to consolidation temperatures were investigated by a combination of microscopy, XRD and thermoelectric property testing. The microstructure of MPCed bulk shows homogeneous and fine distribution through consolidated bulks due to the high solidification of compound powders. The research presented the challenges toward the successful consolidation of thermoelectric powder using magnetic pulsed compaction (MPC) and analysis of thermoelectric properties of the consolidated bulks.

  • Fabrication of $Mg_{95.75}Zn_1Y_3Yb_{0.25}$ bulk alloy has been performed through the consolidation of rapidly solidified ribbons. The $Mg_{95.75}Zn_1Y_3Yb_{0.25}$ bulk alloy exhibited excellent mechanical properties, high tensile yield strength of 530 MPa, and large elongation of 3 %. Microstructure of the alloy was characterized by equiaxed fine grains that consist of -Mg, long period ordered (LPO) structure phase, and $Mg_5RE$-type cubic compound. The strengthening of the alloys may be due to fine grains with LPO structure phase and $Mg_5RE$-type compound.

  • Microstructure and soft magnetic properties of bulk amorphous and/or nanocrystalline $Fe_{73.5}Cu_1Nb_3Si_{13.5}B_9$ alloys prepared by consolidation at 5.5GPa were investigated. The relative density of the bulk sample 1 (from amorphous powders) was 98.5% and the grain sizes were about 10.6nm. While the relative density and grain sizes of bulk sample 2 (from nanocrystalline powders) are 98% and 20.1nm, respectively. Particularly, the bulk samples exhibited a good combined magnetic property: for Sample1, $M_s=125emu/g$ and $H_c=1.5Oe;$ for Sample2, $M_s=129emu/g$ and $H_c=3.3Oe$. The success of synthesizing the nanocrystalline Fe-based bulk alloys will be encouraging for the future development of bulk nanocrystalline soft magnetic alloys.

  • The consolidation results of fine tungsten powders, W-Cu composite and W/Cu FGM by using a novel method combining resistance sintering with ultra high pressure have been reviewed. The densification effects of the consolidation parameters, including pressure, input power and sintering time, have been investigated. The sintering mechanism of this method was quite different from other sintering methods. Particle rearrangement, sliding, distortion and crushing due to the ultra high pressure are the dominant mehanisms at the initial stage, then the dominant sintering mechanisms are transient arc-fused processes controlled by the input power.

  • N-Type $SbI_3$-doped $95%{Bi_2}{Te_3}-5%{Bi_2}{Se_3}$ compounds were prepared by a gas atomization and Magnetic Pulsed Compaction process. The dynamic recrystallization and thermoelectric properties of the MPCed bulks with consolidation temperatures and times were investigated by a combination of microscopy, XRD and thermoelectric property testing. The microstructure of MPCed bulk shows homogeneous and fine distribution through consolidated bulks due to dynamic recrystallization during hot MPC. This research presented the challenges toward the successful consolidation of thermoelectric powder using magnetic pulsed compaction (MPC).
