Microstructure and Tribological Properties along with Chemical Composition and Size of Initial Powder in Fe-based BMG Coating through APS (대기 플라즈마 용사공정을 이용한 Fe계 벌크 비정질 금속 코팅의 초기 분말의 화학조성과 크기에 대한 미세 조직 및 마모 특성)

  • In this study, two kinds of Fe-based bulk metallic glasses (BMG) powder were built-up through atmospheric plasma spray (APS) technique. The microstructure of two coatings was analyzed through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Crystallization and oxidation in coatings were affected by chemical composition and initial powder size. Then, both of them influenced the tribological property.

Characterization of Plasma Sprayed $Cr_2O_3$ Coatings ($Cr_2O_3$계 용사분말의 제조조건 및 용사거리에 따른 플라즈마 용사 코팅층의 특성)

  • Oxide powders of $Cr_2O_3 \;and\;Cr_2O_3+3{\%}TiO_2$ were prepared by spray drying, plasma densification and fused+crushed processes. The oxide coating layers were made by plasma spray and characterized by microstructure, hardness, adhesion strength and relative density. The optimum spray distance for the high quality coatings by spraying dried powders was found to be 9cm. A small amount addition of $TiO_2\;in\;Cr_2O_3$ powder significantly improved coating characteristics by lowering the melting point of powders. The hardness and relative density of coating layers of the plasma densified powders were comparable to fused and crushed powders, however, the adhesion strength was much higher in the former case.

  • Principal peculiarities of technology for applying coatings of metallic powders on internal surfaces of hollow cylindrical parts by centrifugal method with induction heating from internal surface of part are examined. It is shown that most effective checking and regulating method of sintered powder layer is monitoring the high-frequency current generator power upon contactless pickup indications of external surface temperature of rotating part.

Friction and wear properties of plasma-sprayed $Cr_2$$O_3$/$MoO_3$ composite coatings ($MoO_3$가 첨가된 $Cr_2$$O_3$ 플라스마 용사코팅의 마찰 마멸 특성)

  • Plasma-sprayed coatings were prepared using by spray-dried Cr$_2$O$_3$ powder with and without MoO$_3$ addition. A reciprocal type tribe-tester was employed to examine friction and wear behavior of the specimens at room temperature. The worn surfaces of plasma spray coated specimens were observed by SEM. The results showed that friction coefficient of the MoO$_3$-added coatings were lower than those without MoO3 addition. However pure Cr$_2$O$_3$ coating showed the lowest wear loss at the self-mated test. The larger protecting layers were observed at the worn surface of plasma spray coated specimens with MoO$_3$ addition.

  • The various process parameters of thermal spray process affects on quality of Ni-based coatings. Thus, there is need to analyze the effect of process parameters on quality of Ni-based coatings. In this paper, the effects of process parameters on hardness and wear rate of Ni-based coatings were investigated using 4 design of experiments. First, the Ni-based coatings were fabricated according to $L_9(3^4)$ orthogonal array. The hardness tests and the wear tests were performed on the Ni-based coatings. The analysis of variance for the hardness and wear rate were carried out. As a results, the acetylene gas flow and the powder feed rate were identified as main factors effected on the hardness and the oxygen gas flow and the acetylene gas flow were identified as main factors effected on the wear rate. The full factorial experiments design with different levels was applied for investigation of effect of these main factors.

  • Development of biodegradable implants for treatment of complex bone fractures has recently become one of the priority areas in biomedical materials research. Multifunctional corrosion resistant and bioactive coatings containing hydroxyapatite $Ca_{10}(PO_4)_6(OH)_2$ and magnesium oxide MgO were obtained on Mg-Mn-Ce magnesium alloy by plasma electrolytic oxidation. The phase and elemental composition, morphology, and anticorrosion properties of the coatings were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The PEO-layers were post-treated using superdispersed polytetrafluoroethylene powder. The duplex treatment considerably reduced the corrosion rate (>4 orders of magnitude) of the magnesium alloy. The use of composite coatings in inducing bioactivity and controlling the corrosion degradation of resorbable Mg implants are considered promising. We also applied the plasma electrolytic oxidation method for the formation of the composite bioinert coatings on the titanium nickelide surface in order to improve its electrochemical properties and to change the morphological structure. It was shown that formed coatings significantly reduced the quantity of nickel ions released into the organism.

  • Aluminum alloys are being employed in automobile parts as strive to reduce overall vehicle weight to meet demands for improved fuel economy and reduction in vehicle emissions. Al-based composites reinforced with ceramic ($Al_2O_3,\;SiC,\;TiC\;and\;B_4C$) applications in a variety of components in automotive engines, such as liners, where the tribological properties of the material are important. In this study, Al-base composites reinforced with TiC particle powders has been developed for producing plasma spray coatings. The composite plasma spray powders were prepared Al-13Si-3Mg(wt%) alloy with TiC(40, 60 and 80wt%) particles ($0.2~5{\mu}textrm{m}$) by drum type ball milling. The composite powders ($36~76{\mu}textrm{m}$) were sprayed with plasma torch. Plasma sprayed coatings were heat-treated at $500^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours. The wear resistances of the plasma sprayed coatings were found to decrease with increasing TiC content and improved with heat treatment. AlSiMg-40% TiC heat-treated coatings were showed the best wear resistance in this study.

Photocurrent Characteristics of Plasma Sprayed TiO2 Composite Coatings according to Additive Transition Metal (전이금속을 첨가한 플라즈마 TiO2 복합 용사피막의 광전류 특성)

  • In this study, the photocurrent characteristics of plasma sprayed $TiO_2$ coatings have been investigated according to additive transition metal (Fe, Mn, Nb powder) and heat treatment conditions. The plasma sprayed $TiO_2$ coatings by heat treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ and 90 min had the higher photocurrent at ultraviolet light, no photocurrent at visible light. The photocurrent of plasma sprayed $TiO_2$ coatings added by Fe, Mn, Nb (named by plasma sprayed $TiO_2$ composite coatings) was lower than that of plasma sprayed $TiO_2$ coatings at ultraviolet light, as was low in intensity ratio of XRD(101)/(110). and the atomic percentage of oxygen by plasma sprayed $TiO_2$ composite coatings was higher than that by plasma sprayed $TiO_2$ coatings. The photocurrent of plasma sprayed $TiO_2$ composite coatings in heat treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ and 90 min was higher than that of plasma sprayed $TiO_2$ coatings in same heat treatment conditions at ultraviolet and visible light, as was high in oxygen affinity by heat treatment.

Effect of Oxide Particles Addition to Powder Coating on Corrosion Resistance of Steel Used as Marine Equipments (조선·해양 기자재용 강재의 내식성에 미치는 분체도장 중 산화물 첨가의 영향)

  • The demand for powder-coated steel used in the marine industry is increasing owing to their superior corrosion resistance. However, the powder coatings used in commercial products can deteriorate easily by the penetration of brine. In an attempt to suppress brine penetration into the powder coating and significantly increase the corrosion resistance, three types of oxide particles were added to the coating. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests in 3.5% NaCl solution were performed to evaluate the corrosion behaviors of the powder coating with oxide particles. The results showed that the addition of SiO2 particles to a powder coating severely decreased the corrosion resistance due to the easy detachment of agglomerated SiO2 particles with a coarse size from the coating layer. In contrast, the TiO2 and SnO2-added coatings showed better corrosion resistance, and the TiO2-added coating performed best in the test conducted at room temperature. However, conflicting results were obtained from tests conducted at a higher temperature, which may be attributed to the effective suppression of brine penetration by the fine SnO2 particles uniformly distributed in the coating.
