  • Platy silver powders with varied size and thickness were prepared by polyol process with $PdCl_2$ in ethylene glycol and characterized its properties and investigated the effects of reaction time, $NH_4OH$, PVP(poly-vinylpyrrolidone) and $PdCl_2$. The characteristics of the products were verified by scanning electron microscopy(SEM), high resolution transmitted electron microscopy(HR-TEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD) and particle size analyzer(PSA) and image analyzer. Platy silver powder was prepared about $5.5\;{\mu}m$ of size and $0.2\;{\mu}m$ at 120minute. It was found that the size of powders increased by the increasing of $NH_4OH$ and $PdCl_2$ concentrations, and the thickness of powders was decreased by increasing of PVP concentration.

  • The mechanical alloying (MA) effect in $\sigma$-VFe intermetallic compound was studied by neutron and X-ray diffraction. The structure of MA $\sigma$-VFe powders were characterized by the X- ray diffraction with Cu- $K\alpha$ radiation and neutron diffraction with monochromatic neutrons of $1.835\AA$ using a high resolution powder diffractometer (HRPD). Mechanical alloying of $\sigma$-VFe compound gives rise to a dramatic structural change. After 60 hours of MA, the Fe-Fe distribution of the $\sigma$- phase VFe tetragonal structure with 30 atoms in a unit cell is found to change into that of the $\sigma$-(V,Fe) solid solution with bcc structure, which is a stable phase at elevated temperature above $1200^{\circ}C$. A comparison of X-ray diffraction data for the $\alpha$-phase has been also made with the corresponding neutron diffraction data. The (101) and (111) diffraction peaks of the $\sigma$-phase was clearly observed only in neutron diffraction pattern, which is believed to be a characteristic feature due to the chemical atomic ordering of $\sigma$- VFe phase.

  • In this research, it used cement powder and reduction slag, which generates high hydration heat in hydration reaction without heat cure below $-5^{\circ}C$ degree. Purpose of final research is preventing freezing and thawing by making the compressive strength 5MPa in 3days below zero temperature due to own heat of concrete. and it is the result of physical characteristic and thermal property evaluation of reduction slag. Because reduction slag generates high hydration heat, compressive strength development is excellent. By generating highly hydration heat by $C_{12}A_7$ and $C_3A$ in reduction slag, compressive strength is developed in low temperature. In case of displacing only reduction slag without $SO_3$, it is indicated that quick-setting occurs by shortage of $SO_3$. For preventing quick-setting, gypsum is used essentially. According to this research result, in case of using reduction slag and gypsum as a ternary system, compressive strength developed 5MPa in 3 days below zero temperature. It is identified to prevent early frost damage of concrete below zero temperature.

  • In order to develop a natural food preservative, UlGeum (Curcuma longa L.) powder was extracted with ethanol, and its antimicrobial activity was investigated. This ethanol extract showed antimicrobial activity against Bacillussubtilis, Escherichiacoli, and Staphylococcus aureus, and the resulting inhibition zones against the microorganisms by the extract (4 mg/disc) were 11, 10, and 8.5 mm, respectively. To test for further food preservation effects, solutions of the extract were added to rice cakes and noodles at concentrations of 0%, 0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75%, and 1.00%, respectively. Microbial growth was less in the UlGeum ethanol extract-added groups than in the control group. In sensory evaluations, there were significant differences among the groups of rice cakes and noodles in terms of color, taste, flavor, chewiness, and overall acceptability (p<0.05), and the 0.5% added groups received significantly higher scores than the other groups. Furthermore, as storage time increased, the sensory scores of the rice cakes and noodles significantly decreased in all groups (p<0.05). These results suggest that UlGeum is effective for increasing the shelf-life of rice cakes and noodles.

  • For recycling of waste foundry sands, researchers recently try to recycle them rather than depend on reclamation, and are studying on how to combine waste foundry sands with cement and use them for various kinds of construction material as the effective recycling method of waste foundry sand. In this research, The ways to find the proper replacement rate of waste foundry sands and to make use of them were suggested through the experiments on the range to apply waste foundry sands with two levels of 1:3 mixture rate of W/C 43% and 50%. The research result showed that in terms of liquidity as the characteristic of unhardened mortar, as the replacement rate of waste foundry sands increased, its flow tended to decrease. The amount of air also displayed a similar tendency to that of liquidity in that the higher the replacement rate of waste foundry sands became, the lower it became. With regard to the solidity trait of hardened mortar, it increased when the waste foundry sands were replaced more, and the replacement of waste foundry sands caused increased initial solidity. As for the amount of water permeated and that of water absorbed as the water tight proofing properties, the amount of permeated water was proved to decrease because of the gap recharge effect by the fine powder of waste foundry sands, and the replacement of waste foundry sands in the structures requiring watertightness is concluded to be very effective.

  • $LiGd_9(SiO_4)_6O_2:Ce^{3+}$ phosphors were synthesized by solid-state reaction method. The structural characteristic was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction analysis. The emission and excitation spectra of the $Ce^{3+}$ ions doped $LiGd_9(SiO_4)_6O_2$ phosphors were obtained under the UV excitation. The emission spectra of $LiGd_9(SiO_4)_6O_2:Ce^{3+}$ shows the band at 410 nm corresponding to the $^2F_{5/2}$ and $^2F_{7/2}$ states of $Ce^{3+}$. The red shift of $Ce^{3+}$ emission is found as the $Ce^{3+}$ concentration increases, which could be explained by the change in crystal-field symmetry and strength with increasing $Ce^{3+}$ concentration. Fluorescence decay time of $Ce^{3+}$ was about 20 ns. When the concentration of $Ce^{3+}$ increases life time was slightly reduced.

  • In order to increase the surface area of electrodes for electrosorption, porous carbon electrodes were fabricated by a wet phase inversion method. A carbon slurry consisting of a mixture of activated carbon powder (ACP), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF), and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as a solvent was cast directly on a graphite sheet. The cast film was then immersed in pure water for phase inversion. The physical and electrochemical properties of the electrodes were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), porosimetry, and cyclic voltammetry. The SEM images verified that the pores of various sizes were formed uniformly on the electrode surface. The average pore sizes determined for the electrodes fabricated with various NMP contents ranged from 64.2 to 82.4 nm and the size increased as the NMP content increased. All of the voltammograms showed a typical behavior of charging and discharging characteristic at the electric double layer. The electrical capacitance ranged from 3.88 to $5.87F/cm^2$ depending on the NMP contents, and the electrical capacitance increased as the solvent content decreased. The experimental results showed that the solvent content is an important variable controlling pore size and ultimately the capacitance of the electrode.

  • This study carried out an experiment in order to compare thermal characteristics after collecting dust generated in the process of disposing of waste tire, plywood flour in the process of manufacturing plywood, salicylic acid dust in the process of manufacturing functional soap, and dust in the process of manufacturing wheat powder, which has potential fire and explosion hazard. According to the results of experiment, the analysis showed that all samples subject to the experiment were in the condition where heat flux decreased and temperature decreased as the quantity of added talc was increased. This shows that decomposition rate decreased, and hazard decreased. However, in all of samples subject to the experiment, as heating rate increased, endothermic onset temperature moved to the low-temperature part, and the amount of absorbed heat was largely increased. This showed that the decomposition hazard of sample increased as heating rate increased, according to the analysis. Besides, TGA experiment results showed that thermal stability was secured because total weight loss decreased as the amount of talc was increased for all samples subject to the experiment regarding the ratio of weight loss. It is expected that the continuous research and supplementation of dust explosion mechanism in the future will contribute to the establishment of measures for the effective dust explosion prevention.

  • The objective of this paper is to minimize installation length of pipeline and to reduce burial depth for construction by increasing the friction coefficient caused by the interface between backfill material and pipeline. And then, the sufficient friction coefficient shortens the length of expansion joint pipe and gives the life extension of expansion joint absorber for efficient procedure regarding maintenance and administration of construction. The backfill material which is developed in this study has larger and smaller friction angle than that of conventional backfill material (river sand). The backfill material with tire powder provides low friction angle at curved section when pipe diameter increases in size (38% reduction at pipe diameter in 900 mm). When using backfill material with river sand and fly-ash, the mixture mixed with 1.5% fly-ash has 30% and that with 3% fly-ash has 50% reduction effect for minimum installation length of expansion joint pipe.

  • Polyethylene glycol (PEG) 6000-based solid dispersions (SDs), by incorporating various pharmaceutical excipients or microemulsion systems, were prepared using a fusion method, t o compare the dissolution rates and bioavailabilities in rats. The amorphous structure of the drug in SDs was also characterized by powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The ketoconazole (KT), as an antifungal agent, was selected as a model drug. The dissolution rate of KT increased when solubilizing excipients were incorporated into the PEG-based SDs. When hydrophilic and lipophilic excipients were combined and incorporated into PEG-based SDs, a remarkable enhancement of the dissolution rate was observed. The PEG-based SDs, incorporating a self microemulsifying drug delivery system (SMEDDS) or microemulsion (ME), were also useful at improving the dissolution rate by forming a microemulsion or dispersible particles within the aqueous medium. However, due to the limited solubilization capacity, these PEG-based SDs showed dissolution rates, below 50% in this study, under sink conditions. The PEG-based SD, with no pharmaceutical excipients incorporated, increased the maximum plasma concentration (C$_{max}$) and area under the plasma concentration curve (AUC$_{0-6h}$) two-fold compared to the drug only. The bioavailability was more pronounced in the cases of solubilizing and microemulsifying PEG-based SDs. The thermograms of the PEG-based SDs showed the characteristic peak of the carrier matrix around 60$^{\circ}C$, without a drug peak, indicating that the drug had changed into an amorphous structure. The diffraction pattern of the pure drug showed the drug to be highly crystalline in nature, as indicated by numerous distinctive peaks. The lack of the numerous distinctive peaks of the drug in the PEG-based SDs demonstrated that a high concentration of the drug molecules was dissolved in the solid-state carrier matrix of the amorphous structure. The utilization of oils, fatty acid and surfactant, or their mixtures, in PEG-based SD could be a useful tool to enhance the dissolution and bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs by forming solubilizing and microemulsifying systems when exposed to gastrointestinal fluid.
