  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the planning characteristics of certain cases of elderly welfare housing (hitherto EWH), and analyze any problems by comparing this against the actual needs of potential residents. To this end, 38 distinct housing plans from twelve EWH built after 2005 were examined, and a survey on housing needs was taken by 198 people between 48 and 62 years of age. The results are as follows: Firstly, the most common size found among the 10 cases was 42-66 $m^2$, however larger sizes are becoming more frequent. The most popular response on the survey was one favoring smaller housing options. Secondly, the most common floor plan examined consisted of 1 bedroom + LDK and 2 bedroom + LDK. Likewise, the survey reflected that 1 or 2 bedroom housing was preferred. Thirdly, a floor plan composed of a smaller bedroom and LDK is commonly found in smaller floor plans of EWH. The survey reflected potential residents preferred this same style of floor plan, with a smaller bedroom and LDK set up. However, lower-income participants preferred a single, larger bedroom which also can serve as a living space, to go along with a kitchen/dining room (DK). Fourthly, 2 bedroom housing typically included a single bathroom, however the survey indicated that participants preferred a second bathroom to go along with a second bedroom. Consequently, the planning of elderly welfare housing is to a large extent meeting the demands of its potential residents, however house size and the planning of bathrooms have yet to meet these demands, especially with potential lower-income residents when it comes to housing size and space composition.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic information regarding the planning of lounge and hallway areas for skilled nursing facilities for the elderly, given that residents spend much of their time in these areas. This study examined Korean elderly residents' occupancy and behavior in lounges and hallways in order to analyze how plan type, spatial composition, and equipment affect residents. To do this, observations were conducted in five facilities that were provided to the elderly at no charge. Results indicate that a central garden offers a wide hallway area that can be used not only for strolling but also for list of activities; at the same time, it can reduce the overall rate of inactivity. A shorter distance between the lounge and hallway on the opposite side is likely to help better disperse residents' throughout the facility. Hallway corners have potential for activities that may require sofas, tables, or equipment for individual activities; they could also be used for planned interaction programs or unplanned collaboration on the part of small groups of residents.

Also this study investigated historical development of domestic POE researches and current discussions to POE in architecture and interior design fields. The results were as follows. For the purpose of this study, 55 articles from 3 journals were selected and analyzed. 55 articles analyzing POE methodology and applying POE method were published from 1990 to 2010. In the 1990s, studies on introduction of POE method, potential and limitation were conducted. In the 2000s, the research theme showed the study for evaluation of apartment measuring the residents satisfaction. Gathering the opinions of designers and people in architecture field, they have recognized the need to perform POE, indeed it has been difficult to find POE researchers and utilized POE data. Nevertheless, some of them have performed POE of their building and got feedback from residents. In conclusion, to apply POE method and develop its potential, it is necessary to minimize the barriers. It should Therefore, be performed POE by stakeholders who are designers, builders and residents and POE data would be provided a variety of types. Furthermore, POE certification system should be designed at the government level and basically, POE courses must be included in the architectural curriculum.

But the government programs have often been troubled with people in the process of executing the projects or making a plan. In this respect, two parties couldn't communicate freely about the problem of those areas. So, the problematic issues of the areas should be shared with local residents at the beginning of decision making and the process of workshop participating local residents will be needed for understanding the standpoint of the residents. This study is to explore the potential of residents participating workshop to figure out current problems of the urban residential district in the process of executing the residential improvement project of Nakyang residence area in Sangju city. Upon investigation residents participating workshop is very practical in making a plan, but needs positive participation by resident and a decision making system dealing with the information shared and the understanding gained by participants.

Thus, this study pays attention to 'cohousing' as an appropriate alternative of new suburban residential development and preference of residents of suburban residential development applied the concept of cohousing. For this study, literature reviews and survey on suburban area residents were carried out and general results were provided. Through the survey on the residents in suburban areas, request on new suburban residential development and preferences to cohousing were analyzed. Residents responded that suburban residential development should be planned reflecting the characteristics of the area and considerations on communities are the necessity. They also responded that residential development developed the low-rise housing with low population density. It shows that there will be broad potential consumers for suburban residential development applied cohousing technique in the future.

  • Objectives: This study sought to examine the association between long working hours and depressive symptoms among interns and residents in South Korea. Methods: We analyzed a cross-sectional survey of 1,661 interns and residents from the 2014 Korean Interns & Residents Survey. Total working hours during the preceding week was assessed and classified into five categories(i.e. less than 60 hours, 60-79 hours, 80-99 hours, 100-119 hours, and 120-168 hours). Depressive symptoms during the previous week were measured by using ten items from the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale questionnaire. Multivariate negative binomial regression was applied to examine the association between long working hours and depressive symptoms after adjusting for potential confounders, including medical specialty and training year. All analyses were performed using STATA/SE version 13.0. Results: 86%(N=1,429) of interns and residents worked 60 hours or more per week. Compared to the "less than 60 hours" group, long working hours for interns and residents were significantly associated with depressive symptoms: "60-79 hours"(PR: 1.56, 95% CI: 1.05, 2.32), "80-99 hours"(PR: 2.27, 95% CI: 1.54, 3.33), "100-119 hours"(PR: 2.62, 95% CI: 1.76, 3.89), and "120-168 hours"(PR: 3.28, 95% CI: 2.21, 4.86). Conclusions: This study found that long working hours were prevalent among interns and residents in South Korea, and it was associated with depressive symptoms.

  • This study analyzed a survey of residents' awareness of rivers and water spaces that reflected residents' awareness in order to establish a basic park green space plan. Through this, the perception and requirements of rivers and water spaces were analyzed and important information was provided for urban planning and environmental management. As a result of analyzing residents' neutral satisfaction with rivers and their opinions on the frequency of use, role, and purpose, it was confirmed that rivers are recognized as an important part of urban life and contain the potential for development for a better urban environment. . However, considering the dissatisfied response and the relatively low frequency of use, we came to the conclusion that better urban planning and management is needed to meet the needs of residents by improving the river environment and providing various facilities. Based on this, city managers should focus on river management and improvement by actively collecting residents' opinions. Through analysis of the causes of dissatisfied responses, measures such as improving the environment around rivers and waste management should be prepared, and a broad strategy for environmental conservation and utilization should be established by reflecting the diverse expectations and demands of residents. These ongoing efforts are expected to have a positive impact on the sustainability of the city and improvement of residents' quality of life. Additionally, the results of this study will be able to contribute to establishing policies for urban planning and environmental improvement through similar research and analysis in other regions.

  • Greenbelt Zones or park areas such as cave areas have strong zoning restrictions that prevent developments. However, whenever it is needed to free the restrictions for development, planning departments are faced with the problems of which part in the area should select. Especially when households are scattered in small groups, there must be a clear guidelines in order to determine the areas having high potential for development while minimizing resistance from the residents. The methodologies should include means to incorporate many different aspects of decision elements. This study presents strategies to choose groups of residents by employing the concentration index of them and means to incorporate preferences among different decision factors using the AHP method.
