  • Hydrogen serves as a clean energy source with potential applications across various sectors including electricity, transportation, and industry. In terms of policy and economic support, governmental policy backing and economic incentives are poised to accelerate the commercialization and expansion of hydrogen energy technologies. Hydrogen energy is set to become a cornerstone for a sustainable future energy system. Additionally, when constructing hydrogen production plants, economic aspects must be considered. The essence of hydrogen production plants lies in the electrolysis of water, a process that separates water into hydrogen and oxygen using electrical energy. The initial capital expenditure (CAPEX) for hydrogen production plants can vary depending on the electrolysis technology employed. This study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of hydrogen production technologies as well as to propose a method for predicting the CAPEX of hydrogen production plants.

  • In this work, the hydrogen production costs of the nuclear energy sources are estimated in the necessary input data on a Korean specific basis. G4-ECONS was appropriately modified to calculate the cost for hydrogen production of HTE process with Very High Temperature nuclear Reactor (VHTR) as a thermal energy source rather than the LUEC (Levelized Unit Electricity Cost). The general ground rules and assumptions follow G4-ECONS. Through a preliminary study of cost estimates, we wished to evaluate the economic potential for hydrogen produced from nuclear energy, and, in addition, to promptly estimate the hydrogen production costs for an updated input data for capital costs. The estimated costs presented in this paper show that hydrogen production by the VHTR could be competitive with current techniques of hydrogen production from fossil fuels if $CO_2$ capture and sequestration is required. Nuclear production of hydrogen would allow large-scale production of hydrogen at economic prices while avoiding the release of $CO_2$. Nuclear production of hydrogen could thus become the enabling technology for the hydrogen economy. The major factors that would affect the cost of hydrogen were also discussed.

  • Characteristics of hydrogen production from various food wastes in anaerobic batch reactors were evaluated to assess the energy potential of organic wastes. Organic wastes which were used in this study were scallion as vegetable, apple as fruit, rice as grain and pork as meat. Ultimate hydrogen yield of scallion, apple, rice and pork were 0.46, 0.47, 0.62 and $0.05mol\;H_2/mol\;hexose$, respectively. On the other hand, hydrogen production rates of scallion, apple, rice and pork were 0.013, 0.021, 0.014 and $0.005mol\;H_2/mol\;hexose/h$, respectively. These results indicated that anaerobic hydrogen fermentation from food waste except for meat was effective in removing organic material as well as producing renewable energy. Volatile fatty acids increased as hydraulic retention time was increased. In the hydrogen fermentation, acidification degree of rice was measured as the highest rate of 75.8% whereas pork was found as the lowest rate of 35.2%.

  • GaN-based sensors have been widely investigated thanks to its potential in detecting the presence of hydrogen. In this study, we fabricated hydrogen gas sensors with AlGaN/GaN heterojunction and investigated how the sensing performance to be affected by SiN surface passivation. The gas sensor employed a high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) with 30 nm platinum catalyst as a gate to detect the hydrogen presence. SiN layer was deposited by inductively-coupled chemical vapor deposition as post-passivation. The sensors with SiN passivation exhibited hydrogen sensing characteristics with various gas flow rates and concentrations of hydrogen in inert background gas at $200^{\circ}C$ similar to the ones without passivation. Aside from quick response time for both sensors, there are differences in sensitivity and recovery time because of the existence of the passivation layer. The results also confirmed the dependence of sensing performance on gas flow rate and gas concentration.

  • Flame onset and propagation within hydrogen premixed gas mixture are numerically investigated in an rectangular enclosure. A detailed chemistry for hydrogen reaction is applied to anticipate the thermochemical behavior of intermediate species appropriately. To facilitate computation, 10 species and 16 elementary reaction steps for hydrogen combustion are taken into account. On the basis of 30% of hydrogen concentration in hydrogen-air mixture, the effects of position and quantity of ignition sources on the flame evolution are analyzed. From the simulation results, the methods to decrease the potential hazard caused by the flame propagation are suggested.

  • It is well known that SSCC (sulfide stress corrosion cracking) is caused by drastic ingression of hydrogen during the service and accumulation of hydrogen near the potential crack initiation site in the material. It is important to characterize the hydrogen trapping behavior to evaluate the service performance of the high strength pipeline steels. In this study. the relationship between the hydrogen trapping behavior and SSCC susceptibility is evaluated in terms of alloy composition, microstructure and carbide behavior. The hydrogen trapping behavior was measured by electrochemical hydrogen permeation test cell (Devanathan cell). The SSCC susceptibility is evaluated by constant extension rate test and constant strain lest method. The hydrogen trapping behavior is affected greatly by microstructure and nature of carbide particles. The fine TiC, and NbC in the matrix of ferritic structure acts as strong irreversible trap sites whereas the bainitic structure acts as reversible trap site. The SSCC susceptibility is closely related to not only the hydrogen trapping behavior but also the loading condition. As the activity of reversible trap site increases, SSCC susceptibility decreases under static loading condition below yield strength, whereas SSCC susceptibility increases under dynamic loading condition or above yield strength. As the activity of irreversible trap site increases. SSCC susceptibility increases regardless of loading condition. It is cased by the mixed effect of dislocation on hydrogen diffusion and trapping behavior.

  • Hydrogen has potential for preventive and therapeutic applications as an antioxidant. However, micro- and macroparticles of hydrogen in water disappear easily over time. In order to eliminate reactive oxygen species (ROS) related with the aging process, we used functional water containing nanoparticle hydrogen. Nanoparticle hydrogen does not disappear easily and collapse under water after long periods of time. We used murine embryonic fibroblasts that were isolated from 12.5-day embryos of C57BL/6 mice. We investigated the ability of nanoparticle hydrogen in water to suppress hydroxyurea-induced ROS production, cytotoxicity, and the accumulation of ${\beta}-galactosidase$ (an indicator of aging), and promote cell proliferation. The accumulation of ${\beta}-galactosidase$ in the cytoplasm and the appearance of abnormal nuclei were inhibited by daily treatment of cells with hydrogen water. When the aging process was accelerated by hydroxyurea-induced oxidative stress, the effect of hydrogen water was even more remarkable. Thus, this study showed the antioxidant and anti-senescence effects of hydrogen water. Nanoparticle hydrogen water is potentially a potent anti-aging agent.

  • Electrochemical properties were studied for a single particle of active material of hydrogen storage alloy $(MmNi_{3.55}Co_{0.75}Mn_{0.4}Al_{0.3})$ and nickel hydroxides $(NiOH)_2$ for the secondary Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) batteries using the microelectrode, which was manipulated to make electrical contact with an active material particle for cyclic voltammograms (CV) and potential-step experiments. As a result of CV test, it was found that three kinds of hydrogen oxidation peaks at -0.9, -0.75 and -0.65 V and hydrogen evolution peak at -0.98 V for hydrogen storage alloy were separately observed and two kinds of peaks of proton oxidation/reduction at 0.45 and 0.32 V and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at 0.6 V for nickel hydroxides were also more clearly observed. Furthermore hydrogen diffusion coefficient within a single particle was also found to vary the order between $10^{-9}\;and\;10^{-10}cm^2/s$ over the course of hydrogenation and dehydrogenation process for potential-step experiments.

  • When some kinds of inhibitors, i.e. $1{\times}10{-3}mol/l$ arsenic trioxide, 0.2 mol/l 2-mercaptoethanol, 0.2mol/l thiourea were added to 3% NaCl solution, there were some considererable effects to decrease corrosion current density in natural potential condition and the effect fo solution temperature increasing corrosion rate was smaller than that of no addition to 3% NaCl solution. However the susceptibility of hydrogen embrittlement due to over-protection in case of cathodic protection was much greater than that of no addition, especially was the greatest in case of addition of 2-mercaptoethanol. Therefore adding inhibitors for anti-corrosion effect, it is suggested that selection of the optimum protection potential is important from the view point of prevention against hydrogen embrittlement due to over-protection in case of cathodic protection.
