The vibratory bowl feeder is the most versatile of all hopper feeding devices for small engineering parts, and the typical nonlinear dynamic system experiencing repeated impacts with friction. We model and analyze the dynamic behavior of a single part on the vibrating track of the bowl feeder. While the previous studies are restricted to the sliding regime, we focus our analysis on the hopping regime where the high conveying rate is available. We present the numerical analysis results for conveying rate and frictional impact process both in periodic and chaotic regimes. We examined the dynamic effects from the variation of several physical parameters, and presented the important features for the design of the vibratory bowl feeder. This research holds much potential for leverage over design problems of wide range of mechanisms and tools with repeated collisions.

This paper is concerned with the dynamic modeling of transmission line undergoing galloping vibrations. To this end, the kinetic and potential energies of a uniform wire vibrating in space are derived. The equations of motion suitable for numerical simulations are derived using the assumed mode method and Lagrange equation. The resulting equations of motion are expressed in matrix form. To cope with bundled transmission line, the spacer was modelled by a spring element. As a numerical example, a two-wire transmission line combined by spacers was considered. Natural vibration characteristics show that the in-plane vibrations of the transmission line appeared in low frequency range, which may lead to galloping.
During the loading/offloading operation of a liquefied natural gas carrier (LNGC) that is moored in a side-by-side configuration with an offshore plant, sloshing that occurs due to the partially filled LNG tank and the interactive effect between the two floating bodies are important factors that affect safety and operability. Therefore, a time-domain software program, called CHARM3D, was developed to consider the interactions between sloshing and the motion of a floating body, as well as the interactions between multiple bodies using the potential-viscous hybrid method. For the simulation of a floating body in the time domain, hydrodynamic coefficients and wave forces were calculated in the frequency domain using the 3D radiation/diffraction panel program based on potential theory. The calculated values were used for the simulation of a floating body in the time domain by convolution integrals. The liquid sloshing in the inner tanks is solved by the 3D-FDM Navier-Stokes solver that includes the consideration of free-surface non-linearity through the SURF scheme. The computed sloshing forces and moments were fed into the time integration of the ship's motion, and the updated motion was, in turn, used as the excitation force for liquid sloshing, which is repeated for the ensuing time steps. For comparison, a sloshing motion coupled analysis program based on linear potential theory in the frequency domain was developed. The computer programs that were developed were applied to the side-by-side offloading operation between the offshore plant and the LNGC. The frequency-domain results reproduced the coupling effects qualitatively, but, in general, the peaks were over-predicted compared to experimental and time-domain results. The interactive effects between the sloshing liquid and the motion of the vessel can be intensified further in the case of multiple floating bodies.
This article investigates kinematic characteristics of a Sch$\ddot{o}$nflies motion generator which represents a mechanism having translational three Degree-of-Freedom (DOF) and rotational one-DOF motion about a fixed axis. The mechanism consists of the base plate and the moving plate, and four identical limbs connecting them. Each limb employs two revolute joints (RR), one parallelogram (Pa), and two revolute joints (RR) from the base plate to the moving plate. The mechanism is driven by four actuators which are placed on the base plate to minimize dynamic loads. It is shown through simulations that the mechanism can be designed to secure large dexterous workspace and thus has very high potential for actual applications such as haptic devices and high-speed requiring tasks such as pick-and-place operations, riveting, screwing tasks, etc.

A general procedure is presented here to develope seismic design and analysis method for cable-supported bridges like suspension bridges subjected to ground motion. For representing a numerical model of suspension bridges. a new approach which satisfy design conditions for the initial equilibrium state of suspension bridges. without any nonlinear iterations. is proposed. The dynamic behavior of that model is verified by free vibration analysis. This study uses the response spectrum analysis to determine the Peak response of a suspension bridge to earthquake-induced ground motion. The SRSS(Square Root of Sum of Square). modal combination rule, is adopted for each direction, longitudinal and transverse. To illustrate the potential applicability for the seismic design of suspension bridges, a numerical example is presented in which the dynamic response of the Nam-hae suspension bridge subjected to earthquake

Maglev vehicles, which are levitated and propelled by electromagnets, often run on elevated flexible guideways comprised of steel, aluminum and concrete. Therefore, an analysis of the dynamic interaction between the Maglev vehicle and the flexible guideway is needed in the design of the critical speed, ride, controller design and weight reduction of the vehicle. This study introduces a dynamic interaction simulation technique that applies structural dynamics. Because the proposed method uses detailed 3D FE models, it is useful to analyze the deformation of the elevated flexible guideway, the dynamic stress, and the motion of the vehicle. By applying the proposed method to an urban transit Maglev vehicle, UTM01, the dynamic response is simulated and validated. From the result of the study, we concluded that the simulation of dynamic interaction between the Maglev vehicle and the flexible guideway is possible and a potential of using computational mechanics.

A numerical method is developed for the nonlinear motion of two-dimensional wedges and axisymmetric-forced-heaving motion using Semi-Largrangian scheme under assumption of potential flows. In two-dimensional-problem Cauchy's integral theorem is applied to calculate the complex potential and its time derivative along boundary. In three-dimensional-problem Rankine ring sources are used in a Green's theorem boundary integral formulation to salve the field equation. The solution is stepped forward numerically in time by integrating the exact kinematic and dynamic free-surface boundary condition. Numerical computations are made for the entry of a wedge with a constant velocity and for the forced harmonic heaving motion from rest. The problem of the entry of wedge compared with the calculated results of Champan[4] and Kim[11]. By Fourier transform of forces in time domain, added mass coefficient, damping coefficient, second harmonic forces are obtained and compared with Yamashita's experiment[5].
For the spatially coupled free vibration analysis of shear deformable thin-walled non-symmetric curved beam subjected to initial axial force, an exact dynamic element stiffness matrix of curved beam is evaluated. Firstly equations of motion and force-deformation relations are rigorously derived from the total potential energy for a curved beam element. Next a system of linear algebraic equations are constructed by introducing 14 displacement parameters and transforming the second order simultaneous differential equations into the first order simultaneous differential equations. And then explicit expressions for displacement parameters are numerically evaluated via eigensolutions and the exact $14{\times}14$ dynamic element stiffness matrix is determined using force-deformation relations. To demonstrate the accuracy and the reliability of this study, the spatially coupled natural frequencies of shear deformable thin-walled non-symmetric curved beams subjected to initial axial forces are evaluated and compared with analytical and FE solutions using isoparametric and Hermitian curved beam elements and results by ABAQUS's shell elements.
A simple efficient method of spotting and recognizing hand gestures in video is presented using a network of hidden Markov models and dynamic programming search algorithm. The description starts from designing a set of isolated trajectory models which are stochastic and robust enough to characterize highly variable patterns like human motion, handwriting, and speech. Those models are interconnected to form a single big network termed a spotting network or a spotter that models a continuous stream of gestures and non-gestures as well. The inference over the model is based on dynamic programming. The proposed model is highly efficient and can readily be extended to a variety of recurrent pattern recognition tasks. The test result without any engineering has shown the potential for practical application. At the end of the paper we add some related experimental result that has been obtained using a different model - dynamic Bayesian network - which is also a type of stochastic model.

The longitudinal stability characteristics of a Wing-In-Ground Effect Craft are quite different from that of the conventional airplane due to the existence of force and moment derivatives with regard to height. This stability characteristics plays a great role in designing a safe and efficient WIG due to its potential danger in sea surface proximity. The static and dynamic stability criteria are derived from the motion equations of WIG in the framework of small disturbance theory and discussed in the paper. The static and dynamic stability analyses of a 20-passenger WIG are conducted based on the wind tunnel test data and the dynamic motion behaviors are investigated for the change of the design parameters. Finally, the flying quality of the 20-passenger WIG is analysed at the cruising condition according to the military regulations.
