  • We have developed new algorithms for solution of the three-dimensional, time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations that utilize massively parallel supercomputing implemented on the Connection Machine 5. Here, we apply these techniques to analyze he fluid flows that occur during the growth of the tow nonlinear optical crystals-potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP), which is producted in a novel rapid growth system under development by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Laser Division, and Potassium titanyl phosphate(KTP), which is grown from a high-temperature aqueous solution.

  • The microorganisms producing a lipoxygenase inhibitor were screened from a wide variety of sources. The isolated strain was assigned to genus Penicillium by its cultural and morphological characteristics. The proper medium for the production of lipoxygenase inhibitor was composed of glucose 3.0%, ammonium sulfate 0.4%, and potassium phosphate (dibasic) 0.1%. The cultivation for lipoxygenase inhibitor production was carried out in 500m1 Erlenmyer flasks containing 100m1 of the medium at $30^{\circ}C$ by cultivating reciprocally. The highest lipoxygenase inhibitor production was observed after 8 days of cultivation. The inhibitor was the low molecular weight substance and inhibited specifically soybean origin lipoxygenase.

  • The properties of the alcohol-oxidase from yeasts assimilating of methanol(Hansenula polymorpha CBS 4732, Pichia pastoris CBS 2612 and Candida boidinii CBS 8106) as free(cellules, purified enzymes) and immobilized forms(immobilized cellules, immobilized enzymes) were investigated. Immobilization enhanced the activity and stability of alcohol-oxidase to a certain degree. The optimum temperature of the immobilized alcohol-oxidase was lower than those of the free forms. The pH / activi쇼 profiles of alcohol-oxidase did not change by immobilization, but changed by the microorganisms. When the immobilized cellules were stocked at 4$^{\circ}C$ in 10mM potassium phosphate buffer(pH 7.5 or 8.0), alcohol-oxidase was more stable than those were stocked in potassium phosphate buffer containing 0.65M sucrose. The immobilization modifies the conditions of oxidation on the various substrates. alcohol-oxidase in immobilized forms showed some with higher Km value for methanol than that in free ones.

  • We have experimentally simulated the violation of the Leggett-Garg inequality (LGI) using a heralded-single-photon source via spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in a periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) crystal. We measured the polarization fringe as a function of the angle of the linear polarization of the photons, and analyzed the LGI according to n measurement. Simulation results for LGI based on the polarization of the heralded single photon were in good agreement with theoretical calculations.

  • The potential of electrokinetic (EK) technology has been successfully demonstrated for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated fine-grained soils through laboratory scale and field application studies. Arsenic contamination in soil is a serious problem affecting both site use and groundwater quality. The EK technology was evaluated for the removal of arsenic from two soil samples: kaolinite clay artificially contaminated with arsenic and arsenic-bearing tailing soil taken from the Myungbong (MB) mining area. The effect of cathodic electrolyte on the process was investigated using three different types of electrolyte: deionized water (DIW), potassium phosphate (KH$_2$PO$_4$) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The result of experiments on the kaolinite clay shows that the potassium phosphate was most effective in extracting arsenic, probably resulting from anion exchange of arsenic species by phosphate. On the contrary, the sodium hydroxide seemed to be most efficient in removing arsenic from the tailing soil, and it is explained by the fact that sodium hydroxide increased the soil pH and accelerated ionic migration of arsenic species through increase in desorption and dissolution of arsenic species into pore water.

  • Ammonium nitrogen is volatilized as ammonia at high pH soil. This study was conducted to observe an injury cause of egg plant grown in a high pH rockwool amended with ammonium phosphate. The etiolation symptom (yellowing) was appeared on veins of a leaf but not in healthy root when nutrient solution containing ammonium phosphate in addition to essential elements was applied in a top soil of which pH was 7.8. However, the same symptom did not appeared in the egg plant from the top soil in which the nutrition solution containing potassium phosphate instead of ammonium phosphate was applied. pHs were similar between these two different solutions. This revealed that the injury was caused by ammonia gas.

  • With the aim to explore the possible role of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria in soil, we conducted a survey of phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms colonizing in upland and plastic film house soils. Soil EC, pH, organic matter, available phosphate, exchangeable cation such as potassium, calcium and magnesium, and total P of plastic film house soils were higher than those of upland soils. Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria population was higher in plastic film house soils than upland soils, but species of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria was more diverse in the upland soils than the plastic film house soils. There was significant positive correlation between phosphate solubilization and phosphate-solubilizing bacteria in soils. Bacillus, Cedecea, Brevibacillus, Paenibacillus, Pseudomonas, Serratia spp. were isolated from upland soils and Bacillus and Cellulomonas spp. were from plastic film house soils.

  • Three rates of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium were applied to a old tobacco Hyangcho for the establishment of the optimum rate of fertilizers for Growth and chemical component. 1. The rate increament of nitrogen and potassium increased tobacco growth, but the effect of phosphate was non-significant between rates. 2. The contents of total-nitrogen and total-alkaloid in the leaf increased with increase of nitrogen rate while the effect of phosphate and potassium were negligible.

  • In exopolysaccharide fermentation by Aureobasidium pulluans, the effects culture conditions (concentration of nitrogen, potassium phosphate, dissolved oxygen, and initial pH) on the production of exopolysaccharide and the appearance of melanin pigment were investigated. The results are as follows. (1) The specific growth rate and the specific production rate of exopolysaccharide were inhibited by substrate when the carbon source concentration higher than $50g\;/\;{\ell}$ and the cell growth increased with increases of nitrogen source but exopolysaccharide production decreased with the nitrogen concentration when it become greater than $1\;g\;/\;{\ell}$. (2) The maximum cell growth and the maximum exopolysaccharide production were obtained at initial pH values of 3.0 and 7.5 respectively. As the initial pH increased, the yeast-like cells increased and the increased of dissolved oxygen increased the cell growth and exopolysaccharide production. (3) As the concentration of dissolved oxygen is increased or the concentration of nitrogen source is decreased, the period of melanin pigment appearance becomes shorter and the melanin pigment never appeared when the initial pH was less than 3.0 or the potassium phosphate was not added.
