  • Purpose: This study aims to investigate the effects of an intervention of self-feeding for elderly residents who were eating with assistance or eating by himself/herself with spilling food. Methods: The Participants were 11 elderly people and 6 formal caregivers from 7 nursing homes in Korea. The intervention was to use the spoon and chopstick sets designed for compensating the weakened eating function. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected through observation, structured questions, and in-depth interviews. Results: The mealtime was significantly increased by 3.2 minutes (p=.011) after the intervention. Three themes were extracted for the meaning of self-feeding expressed by the elders; fighting alone for self-feeding, pride of participating in the study, and burden for self-feeding and research participation. Caregivers expressed the meaning of the elder's self-feeding such as the regret of missed chances, facilitating rehabilitation, the increase of the eating pleasure and quality of care, and ambivalence. Conclusion: Self-feeding has become an opportunity to recognize life values for the elders in nursing homes; for the caregivers, to reconsider caring of the elderly. Posture and eating utensils were also important to improve self-feeding skills.

  • This paper presents a farce manipulability analysis of multi-legged walking robots, which calculates force or acceleration workspace attainable from joint torque limits of each leg. Based on the observation that the kinematic structure of the multi-legged walking robots is basically the same as that of multiple cooperating robots, we derive the proposed method of analyzing the force manipulability of walking robot. The force acting on the object in multiple cooperating robot systems is taken as reaction force from ground to each robot foot in multi-legged walking robots, which is converted to the force of the body of walking robot by the nature of the reaction force. Note that each joint torque in multiple cooperating robot systems is transformed to the workspace of force or acceleration of the object manipulated by the robots in task space through the Jacobian matrix and grasp matrix. Assuming the torque limits are given in infinite norm-sense, the resultant dynamic manipulability is derived as a polytope. The validity of proposed method is verified by several examples, and the proposed method is believed to be useful for the optimal posture planning and gait planning of walking robots.

  • C.elegans are often used to study of function of gene, but it is difficult for human observation to distinguish the mutants of C.elegans. To solve this problem, the system, which can classify the mutant types automatically using the computer vision, is now studying. Tn previous work[1], we described the preprocessing method for automated-classification system. In this paper, we introduce shape features, which can be extracted from an acquisition image. We divide the feature into two categories, which are related to size and posture of the worm, and each feature is described mathematically We validate the shape information experimentally. And we use hierarchical clustering algorithm for classification. It reveals that 4 mutants of the worm, which are used in experiment, can be classified with over 90% of success rate.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine inter- and intra-examiner reliability of the sacroiliac joint (SIJ) anatomical landmarks palpation. Two physical therapists and one doctor specializing in rehabilitation examined 22 asymptomatic subjects. They examined anterior superior iliac supine (ASIS), posterior superior iliac supine (PSIS) and iliac crest (IC). For the assessment of intra-examiner reliability, 3 examiners repeated the measurements 3 times over a 2-week interval. Kappa (Kg) yielded intra-examiner reliability that ranged between slight to fair for the ASIS (Kg=.06 to .26; mean Kg=.19), and slight for the PSIS(Kg=-.04 to .18; mean Kg=.07) and slight to fair for the IC (Kg=.06 to .32; mean Kg=.21). Inter-examiner reliability was slight (ASIS Kg=.13; PSIS Kg=.05; IC Kg=.14). These results suggest that the reliability of the assessing SIJ anatomical landmarks using palpation and observation as an indication of SIJ dysfunction still remains questionable. Before this test can be relied upon as an accurate indicator of SIJ dysfunction, it must undergo further research. This further research needs to examine not only reliability, but also validity, sensitivity and specificity.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify metacommunicative behaviors between nurses and patients in a pediatric unit. The research method included observation using videotaping. Data were collected from December, 2001 to February, 2002. Total six nurses, and eight patients and their mothers in a pediatric unit participated in this study. The interactions were videotaped under the participants' consent. The participants were observed for total 8 hours over 2-day period. Special episodes which were identified as metacommunicative behaviors in the taped interactions were transcribed. Transcription included verbal and nonverbal interactions. Selected episodes were classified using Mitchell's definition. Each classified definitions were named, and categorized by its purpose. The results were as follows: Nineteen metacommunicative behaviors which used frequently by nurses-approaching, mediating eye level, eye contact, touching, encouraging, turnabout, mimic voice, giving choices, friendly demand, expansion, tagging, repeating and confirming, identification, reflection, baby talk, symbolization, description of acts, relaxed posture, turning away- were identified and organized into four categories. They were call for attention, facilitating response, empathy, and tension release. In conclusion, nurses in this study used metacommunicative behaviors frequently and these behaviors were effective in interacting with children. It is suggested that any educational programs to teach communication skills to nurses need to include techniques on metacommunicative behaviors. This will help nurses to be more sensitive to different characteristics of their patients.

  • This paper represents the development of the brake system for the inline skate using bellows. The inline skate that is used at present has defects due to frequent impulse, which weakens the breaking force by damaging the parts. Therefore to solve these problems a break system for the inline skates using hydraulics is suggested. To solve the oil leakage problems, bellows is used. Also to prevent the breaks from not touching the ground when skating the bellows is placed at the heel, high as possible. To obtain fast response speed, the ratio of inner diameter of the bellows is changed so that with only a small displacement from the bellows the rubber pad attached to the bellows will touch the ground fast. The performance of the break system using bellows depends on the optimal design of the bellows. Therefore the parameters that changes the form of the bellows are tested and also the interaction between the forces are investigated. The performance of new model brake system with bellows and old model system with only a rubber pad without bellows was estimated through observation of braking posture.
