  • In an edentulous situation, the dentist must make several determinations when constructing artificial teeth. These include vertical and horizontal relationships of mandible with respect to the maxilla, occlusal form and position, vertical dimension, occlusal relationships during both centric closure and eccentric excursive movements. Artificial teeth are attached to a movable base resting on movable and displaceable living tissue subject to damage. They act as a unit; therefore, they must be arranged to function as a unit. Bilateral balanced occlusion is that stability of the denture is attained when bilateral contacts ex ist throughout all dynamic and static states of the denture during function. Lateral excursion in a balanced scheme implies simultaneous working side and nonworking side contact, while occlusal contacts are maintained on both anterior and posterior teeth as the mandible moves anteriorly into protrusion.

  • Leiomyoma is a type of benign smooth muscle neoplasm that is a common neoplasm of the uterus and gastrointestinal tract but rarely affects the head and neck region and is especially unlikely to affect the oral cavity. The diagnosis of leiomyoma is mainly determined by histopathological studies due to variation in its clinical appearance and symptoms. In the present paper we report two rare cases of gingival angioleiomyoma in the posterior maxilla and mandible. After total excision, hematoxylin-eosin and smooth muscle actin staining confirmed the diagnosis of angioleimyoma.

  • This is the first report of Champsodon longipinnis (Champsodontidae) collected from Korea. The specimen (100.9 mm in standard length) was caught by a bottom trawl in the coastal waters off Busan, Korea. This species is characterized by the following morphological traits: body with small denticulate scales except abdomen around pelvic fin base; posterior end of maxilla extending beyond margin of eye; dark pigmentation on most of the first dorsal fin, upper half of the first to the fourth soft ray of the second dorsal fin, and partial upper lobe of caudal fin. We add C. longipinnis to the Korean fish fauna and suggest a new Korean name, "Jeom-ak-eo-chi," for the species.

  • Migration of dental implants into the maxillary sinus is uncommon. However, poor bone quality and quantity in the posterior maxilla can increase the potential for this complication to arise during implant placement procedures. The aim of this report is to present a dental implant that migrated into the maxillary sinus and disappeared. A 53-year-old male patient was referred to us by his dentist after a dental implant migrated into his maxillary sinus. The displaced implant was discovered on a panoramic radiograph taken five days before his referral. Using computed tomography, we determined that the displaced dental implant was not in the antrum. There was also no sign of oroantral fistula. Because of the small size of the displaced implant, we think that the implant may have left the maxillary sinus via the ostium.

  • Calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (CCOT) is an uncommon benign cystic neoplasm of the jaw that develops from the odontogenic epithelium. Invasion into the maxillary sinus by a CCOT is not a typical, and the recurrence of the cystic variant of CCOT in the posterior maxilla is rare. This report describes a recurrent CCOT occupying most of the maxillary sinus of a 24-year-old male patient. As a treatment, marsupialization was carried out as a means of decompression, and the involved teeth were all endodontically treated. Afterward, surgical enucleation was performed. The size of the lesion continued to shrink after marsupialization, and the maxillary sinus restored its volume. This patient has been followed-up for 3 years after the surgery, and there have not been any signs of recurrence.

  • 150 "K" primary school children, from 6 to 10 years old, have been examined both clinically and radiographically for proximal caries in deciduous canine and deciduous posterior teeth and permanent first molar teeth. 1. 598 proximal cavities were diagnosed 154 (25.75%) were revealed by both examinations. 39 (6.52%) appeared on clinical examination only, but 405 (67.73%) were revealed by radiographic examination only. 2. The dental caries occurance on distal surface of first deciduous molar and mesial surface of second deciduous molar were revealed much higher values in all ages. 3. There is no significant differences observed between right and left arch. 4. Proximal cavities were revealed 1.7 times more in mandible than in maxilla.

  • The patient,20 year-old female, complained of anterior open bite. She had tongue thrusting habit and suffered from maxillary sinusitis since 12-years old. Cephalometric analysis revealed slightly forward relationship in maxilla, but normal in mandible. The anterior open bite was corrected through retraction and extrusion of anterior segment and mesial movement of posterior segment under multibanded system after extraction of 4-first premolars. After 2 years and 3 months, she gained ideal overbite, overjet and good interdigitation of buccal segment.

  • The purposes of this investigation was to determine the appearance rate of nutrient canals and the aspect of alveolar bone trabecular patterns. 1949 subjects, averages 23 years old, who have normal occlusion were used. The film used in this investigation was full mouth roentgenographic survey. The obtained results were as follows: 1. In the trabecular pattern, coarse form was 35.17% and fine one was 64.14% in both jaws. 2. The appearance rate of nutrient canals was much higher in mandibular anterior segment(89.13%) than in the maxillary posterior segment(0.86%). 3. In the trabecular forms, small trabecular space and horizontal relation appeared in the mandible, and vertical relation in the maxilla.

  • Herein, we report and discuss the detection of fossa navicularis magna, a close radiographic anatomic variant of canalis basilaris medianus of the basiocciput, as an incidental finding in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging. The CBCT data of the patients in question were referred for the evaluation of implant sites and to rule out pathology in the maxilla and mandible. CBCT analysis showed osseous, notch-like defects on the inferior aspect of the clivus in all four cases. The appearance of fossa navicularis magna varied among the cases. In some, it was completely within the basiocciput and mimicked a small rounded, corticated, lytic defect, whereas it appeared as a notch in others. Fossa navicularis magna is an anatomical variant that occurs on the inferior aspect of the clivus. The pertinent literature on the anatomical variations occurring in this region was reviewed.

  • Ovigerous crab of Sphaerozius nitidus of the family Menippidae was collected from Geojedo, Gyeongsangnamdo and hatched in the laboratory. Digital imaging of live zoeas of the first zoea stage of S. nitidus has been reported for the first time in the world, and its morphology has been redescribed and illustrated. This study is different from former study in that it has three unequal setae with exopod of antenna, 5+4 setae with basial endite of maxilla, and dorsomedial spine and lateral minute spine with fork of telson. The first zoea of S. nitidus has black pigments occurring behind the eyes, on the dorsal spine medially and on the basis of lateral carapace spines, on basal of basis of maxillipeds 1, 2, and posterior margins of somites 1-5, and yellowish green chromatophores on the dorsal spine.
