  • This study proposes a rule-based image classification method for the time-series analysis of changes in the land surface of the Seongnam-Yongin area using satellite-image data from 2000 to 2009. In order to identify the change patterns during each period, 11 classes were employed in accordance with statistical/mathematic rules. A generalized algorithm was used so that the rules could be applied to the unsupervised-classification method that does not establish any training sites. The results showed that the urban area of the object increased by 145% due to housing-site development. The image data from 2009 had a classification accuracy of 98%. For method verification, the results were compared to land-cover changes through Post-classification comparison. The maximum utilization of the available data within multiple images and the optimized classification allowed for an improvement in the classification accuracy. The proposed rule-based image-classification method is expected to be widely employed for the time-series analysis of images to produce a thematic map for urban development and to monitor urban development and environmental change.

  • In this article a comprehensive review of the Rock Mass Rating and Q-rockmass classification systems is made with reference to their scope with in the constraints of underground mining operations. The modifications suggested by KIGAM for both the RMR and Q for the calculation of a safe unsupported span were tested for Daesung and Pyunghae underground limestone mines. Even though the suggested modifications were site specific, the additional parameters considered in the above classification systems are very significant for a design of stable underground openings, considering any general mining conditions.

  • This paper describes an algorithm to suppress composite noise in a two-microphone speech enhancement system for robust hands-free speech communication. The proposed algorithm has four stages. The first stage estimates the power spectral density of the residual stationary noise, which is based on the detection of nonstationary signal-dominant time-frequency bins (TFBs) at the generalized sidelobe canceller output. Second, speech-dominant TFBs are identified among the previously detected nonstationary signal-dominant TFBs, and power spectral densities of speech and residual nonstationary noise are estimated. In the final stage, the bin-wise output signal-to-noise ratio is obtained with these power estimates and a Wiener post-filter is constructed to attenuate the residual noise. Compared to the conventional beamforming and post-filter algorithms, the proposed speech enhancement algorithm shows significant performance improvement in terms of perceptual evaluation of speech quality.

  • The current research focuses on the seismic vulnerability assessment of typical Southern Europe buildings, based on processing of a large set of observational damage data. The presented study constitutes a sequel of a previous research. The damage statistics have been enriched and a wider damage database (178578 buildings) is created compared to the one of the first presented paper (73468 buildings) with Damage Probability Matrices (DPMs) after the elaboration of the results from post-earthquake surveys carried out in the area struck by the 7-9-1999 near field Athens earthquake. The dataset comprises buildings which developed damage in several degree, type and extent. Two different parameters are estimated for the description of the seismic demand. After the classification of damaged buildings into structural types they are further categorized according to the level of damage and macroseismic intensity. The relative and the cumulative frequencies of the different damage states, for each structural type and each intensity level, are computed and presented, in terms of damage ratio. Damage Probability Matrices (DPMs) are obtained for typical structural types and they are compared to existing matrices derived from regions with similar building stock and soil conditions. A procedure is presented for the classification of those buildings which initially could not be discriminated into structural types due to restricted information and hence they had been disregarded. New proportional DPMs are developed and a correlation analysis is fulfilled with the existing vulnerability relations.

  • Previous post sender recognition study was focused on recognizing the address of receiver. Relatively, there was lack of study to recognize the information of sender's address. Post sender recognition study is necessary for the service and application using sender information such as returning. This paper did the experiment and suggested how to recognize post sender using SIFT. Although SIFT shows great recognition rate, SIFT had problems with time and mis-recognition. One is increased time to match keypoints in proportion as the number of registered model. The other is mis-recognition of many similar keypoints even though they are all different models due to the nature of post sender. To solve the problem, this paper suggested SIFT adding distance function and did the experiment to compare time and function. In addition, it is suggested how to register and classify models automatically without the manual process of registering models.

  • In this study, we developed novel indicators to assess postoperative pain based on PPG derivative waveform. As the candidate indicator of postoperative pain assessment, the time from the start of beating to the n-th peak($T_n$) and the n-th peak amplitude($A_n$) of the PPG derivative were selected. In order to verify derived indicators, each candidate indicator was derived from the PPG of 78 subjects before and after surgery, and it was confirmed whether significant changes were observed after surgery. Logistic classification was performed with each proposed indicator to calculate the pain classification accuracy, then the classification performance was compared with SPI(Surgical Pleth Index, GE Healthcare, Chicago, US). The results showed that there were significant differences(p < 0.01) in all indicators except for $T_3$ and $A_3$. The coefficient of variation(CV) of every time-related indicators were lower than the CV of SPI(30.43%), however, the CV in amplitude-related parameters were higher than that of SPI. Among the candidate indicators, amplitude of the first peak, $A_1$, showed that highest accuracy in post-operative pain classification, 68.72%, and it is 15.53% higher than SPI.

  • There are various problems while applying classification or clustering algorithm in that document classification which requires post processing or classification after getting as a web search result due to my keyword. Among those, two problems are severe. The first problem is the need to categorize the document with the help of the expert. And, the second problem is the long processing time the document classification takes. Therefore we propose a new method of web document clustering which can dramatically decrease the number of times to calculate a document similarity using the Transitive Closure Tree(TCT) and which is able to speed up the processing without loosing the precision. We also compare the effectivity of the proposed method with those existing algorithms and present the experimental results.
