Global Positioning System (GPS) is used in various fields such as communications systems, transportation systems, e-commerce, power plant systems, and up to various military weapons systems recently. However, GPS receiver is vulnerable to jamming signals as the GPS signals come from the satellites located at approximately 20,000 km above the earth. For this reason, various anti-jamming techniques have been developed for military application systems especially and it is also required for commercial application systems nowadays. In this paper, we proposed a dual-channel Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) RF ASIC for digital pre-correlation anti-jam technique. It not only covers all GNSS frequency bands, but is integrated low-gain/attenuation mode in low-noise amplifier (LNA) without influencing in/out matching and 14-bit analogdigital converter (ADC) to have a high dynamic range. With the aid of digital processing, jamming to signal ratio is improved to 77 dB from 42 dB with proposed receiver. RF ASIC for anti-jam is fabricated on a 0.18-μm complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology and consumes 1.16 W with 2.1 V (low-dropout; LDO) power supply. And the performance is evaluated by a kind of test hardware using the designed RF ASIC.

With the fast-developing of mobile terminals, positioning techniques based on fingerprinting method draws attention from many researchers even world famous companies. To conquer some shortcomings of the existing fingerprinting systems and further improve its performance, we propose a radio map building and updating technique, which is able to customize the spatial and temporal dependency of radio maps. The method includes indoor propagation and penetration modeling and the analysis of human traffic. Based on the combination of Ray-Tracing Algorithm, Finite-Different Time-Domain and Rough Set Theory, the approach of indoor propagation modeling accurately represents the spatial dependency of the radio map. In terms of temporal dependency, we specifically study the factor of moving people in the interest area. With measurement and statistics, the factor of human traffic is introduced as the temporal updating component. We improve our existing indoor positioning system with the proposed building and updating method, and compare the localization accuracy. The results show that the enhanced system can conquer the influence caused by moving people, and maintain the confidence probability stable during week, which enhance the actual availability and robustness of fingerprinting-based indoor positioning system.

This paper describes a location tracking system to guide landing process of an Unmanned Helicopter(UMH) exploiting MIT Cricket nodes. For automatic landing of a UMH, a precise positioning system is indispensable. However, GPS(Global Positioning System) is inadequate for tracking the three dimensional position of a UMH because of large positioning errors. The Cricket systems use Time-Difference-of-Arrival(TDoA) method with ultrasonic and RF(Radio Frequency) signals to measure distances. They operate in passive mode in that a listener attached to a moving device receives distance signals from several beacons located at fixed points on ground. Inevitably, this passive type of implementation causes large disturbances in measuring distances between beacons and the listener due to wind blow from propeller and turbulence of UMH body. To cope with this problem, we proposed active type of implementation for positioning a UMH. In this implementation, a beacon is set up at UMH body and four listeners are located at ground area at least where the UMH will land. A pair of Ultrasonic and RF signals from the beacon arrives at several listeners to calculate the position of the UMH. The distance signals among listeners are synchronized with a counter value appended to each distance signals from the beacon.

The satellite navigation system was developed for the purpose of calculating the location of local users, starting with the Global Positioning System (GPS) in the 1980s. Advanced countries in the space industry are operating Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) that covers the entire earth, such as GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou, by establishing satellite navigation systems for each country. Regional Navigation Satellite Systems (RNSS) such as QZSS and NavIC are also in operation. In the early 2010s, only GPS and GLONASS could calculate location using a single system for location determination. After 2016, the EU and China also completed the establishment of GNSS such as Galileo and BeiDou. As a result, satellite navigation users can benefit from improved availability of GNSS. In addition, before Galileo and BeiDou's Full Operational Capability (FOC) declaration, they used combined navigation algorithms to calculate the user's location by adding another satellite navigation system to the GPS satellites. Recently, it may be possible to calculate a user's location for each navigation system using the resources of a single system. In this paper, we evaluated the performance of single system navigation and combined navigation solutions of GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou and QZSS individual navigation systems using high-performance GNSS receivers.

Visible light communication (VLC) using LED lamps is suitable for implementing an indoor positioning system in an indoor environment where the global positioning system (GPS) signal does not reach. In this paper, we present an indoor positioning system for mobile robots using a VLC beacon and fuzzy rules. This system consists of an autonomous mobile robot, VLC modules, and device application software. Fuzzy rules are applied to plan the global and local paths along which the mobile robot navigates indoors. The VLC transmitter modules are attached to the wall or the ceiling as beacons to transmit their own location information. The variable pulse position modulation (VPPM) algorithm is used to transmit data, which is a new modulation scheme for VLC providing a dimming control mechanism for flicker-free optical communication. The mobile robot has a receiver module to receive the location information while performing its mission in the environment where VLC transmitters are deployed.

The purpose of this paper is introducing WiFi based EKF(Extended Kalman Filter) method for indoor positioning. The advantages of our EKF method include: 1) Any special equipment dedicated for positioning is not required. 2) implementation of EKF does not require off-line phase of fingerprinting methods. 3) The EKF effectively minimizes squared deviation of the trilateration method. In order to experimentally prove the advantages of our method, we implemented indoor positioning systems making use of the K-NN(K Nearest Neighbors), Bayesian, decision tree, trilateration, and our EKF methods. Our experimental results show that the average-errors of K-NN, Bayesian and decision tree methods are all close to 2.4 meters whereas the average errors of trilateration and EKF are 4.07 meters and 3.528 meters, respectively. That is, the accuracy of our EKF is a bit inferior to those of fingerprinting methods. Even so, our EKF is accurate enough to be used for practical indoor LBS systems. Moreover, our EKF is easier to implement than fingerprinting methods because it does not require off-line phase.

The expected positioning accuracies of civil users utilizing modernized GPS and Galileo are derived using the error analysis in this paper. Since, in general, the performance of DLL, PLL and FLL is proportional to chip lengths and wavelengths, the positioning accuracies from various measurements of modernized GPS and Galileo are derived as function of chip length and wavelength. These results are compared with that from GPS Ll measurement. In absolute positioning, compared to GPS C/A code only case, more than 17 times performance improvement is expected when all civil code signals of modernized GPS and Galileo (L1, L2, L5, E1, E5A and E5B) are used. In relative positioning, compared to GPS L1 carrier phase only case, more than 2 times performance improvement is expected when all civil signals of modernized GPS and Calileo are used. Furthermore, the relationship between GDOP and RGDOP in single frequency case is expanded to general case where multiple frequencies and both code and carrier phase measurements are used.

A frictionless positioning device using cone-shaped active magnetic bearings(AMBs) is developed, which is driven by a brushless DC motor equipped with resolver. The cone-shaped AMB feature that the structure is simple and yet the five d.o.f. rotor motion is controlled by four magnet pairs. A linearized dynamic model, which accounts for the relationship between input voltage and output current in the cone-shaped magnet, is developed and the azimuth motion of the frictionless positioning device is modeled as the second order system. The feedback controller is designed by using linear quadratic regulator with integral action optimal control law so that the cone-shaped AMB system is stabilized and the frictionless positioning device gets the zero steady state. It is observed that the linearized dynamic model is adequate and the frictionless positioning device can achieve the tracking accuracy within the sensor resolution.

Indoor positioning is recently highlighted and various kinds of indoor positioning systems are under developments. Since positioning systems have their own characteristics, proper positioning scheme should be chosen according to the required specifications. Positioning methods are often classified into time-based and angle-based one, and this paper presents the error analysis of these location methods. Because measurement equations of these methods are nonlinear, linearization is usually needed to get the position estimate. In this paper, Gauss-Newton method is used in the linearization. To analyze the position error, we investigate the error ellipse parameters that include eccentricity, rotation angle, and the size of ellipse. Simulation results show that the major axes of error ellipses of TOA and AOA method lie in different quadrants at most region of workspace, especially where the geometry is poor. When the TOA/AOA hybrid scheme is employed, it is found that the error ellipse is reduced to the intersection of ellipses of TOA and AOA method.
Given an object, its positioning in the space is a main concern in structural monitoring and a required feedback in structural health monitoring, structural control and robotics. In addition, to make the sensor unit wireless is a crucial issue for advanced applications. This paper deals with the exploitation of wireless transmission technology to long-term monitoring GPS (Global Positioning System) receivers - like the Leica GMX 902 and the Leica GRX 1200-pro. These GPS receivers consist of five parts: antenna, receiver, user client computer, interface and power supply. The antenna is mounted on the object to be monitored and is connected with the receiver by a coaxial-cable through which the radio frequency signals are transmitted. The receiver unit acquires, tracks and demodulates the satellite signals and provides, through an interface which in this paper is made wireless, the resulting GPS raw data to the user client computer for being further processed by a suitable positioning algorithm. The power supply reaches the computer by a wired link, while the other modules rely on batteries re-charged by power harvesting devices. Two wireless transmission systems, the 24XStream and the CC1110, are applied to replace the cable transmission between the receiver and the user client computer which up to now was the only market offer. To verify the performance and the reliability of this wireless transmission system, some experiments are conducted. The results show a successful cable replacement.
