  • This paper presents a new in-flight alignment method for an SDINS under large initial heading error. To handle large heading error, a new attitude error model is introduced. The attitude errors are divided into heading error and leveling errors using a newly defined horizontal frame. Some navigation error dynamic models are derived from the attitude error model for indirect feedback filtering of the in-flight alignment system. A Kalman filter with Position measurement is designed to estimate navigation errors as the indirect feedback filter Simulation results show that the proposed in-flight alignment method reduces the heading error very quickly from more than 40deg to about 5deg so as to apply a refined navigation filter. The total alignment process including leveling mode and navigation mode in addition to the proposed one allows large initial values not only in heading error but also in leveling errors.

  • In this paper, we propose a new manipulator control scheme based on the CMAG neural network. The proposed control consists of two components. The feedforward component is an output of trained CMAC neural network and the feedback component is a modified sliding mode control. The CMAC accepts the position, velocity and acceleration of manipulator as input and outputs two values for the controller : One is the nominal torque used for feedforward compensation(M1 network) and the other is the inertia matrix related information used for the feedback component(M2 network). Since the used control algorithm guarantees the robust trajectory tracking in spite of modeling errors, the CMAC mapping errors due to the memory limitation are little worth consideration.

  • Design of an in-process feedback control system has been studied for precision grinding. A grinding system consists of a grinding tool, a turn table and a disk-shaped workpiece on the table is taken as an object. A grinding process model has been deduced which gives some reasoning about the process errors. In the control system the tool position is actively controlled by an electro-magnetic actuator in-process. The ground error is feedback to compose a closed-loop control system and an optimal PID controller is applied. Some control performances such as transient response and disturbance such as transient response and disturbance attenuation have been examined, which convinces the effectiveness of the control. Some methods for implementation of the control. Some methods for implementation of the control have been suggested from a standpoint of practical application.

  • A fuzzy learning control algorithm is proposed in this paper. In this method, two fuzzy controllers are used as a feedback and a feedforward type. The fuzzy feedback controller can be designed using simple knowledge for the controlled system. On the other hand, the fuzzy feedforward controller has a self-organizing mechanism and therefore, it does not need any knowledge in advance. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by experiment on the position and force control problem of a parallelogram type robot manipulator with two degrees of freedom. It is shown that the rapid learning and the robustness can be achieved by adopting the proposed method.

  • The precision stage is an essential device for optic fiber assembly systems, micro machines and semiconductor equipments. A new piezoelectric inchworm type actuator is proposed to implement an actuator-integrated long-stroke linear stage. An in-and-quadrature phase (I/Q) heterodyne interferometer is developed as a feedback sensor of a servo system, and a synchronized counting method is proposed. The proposed measurement system can measure the accurate position of fast moving object with robustness to external sensing noise from actuator vibration. The developed servo stage will be applied to optic fiber device assembly system.

  • This work proposes a new method for describing the hysteresis non-linearity of a piezoelectric actuator. The hysteresis behaviour of piezoelectric actuators, including the minor loop trajectory, are modeled by geometrical relationship between a reference major loop and its minor loops. This hysteresis model is transformed into inverse hysteresis model in order to output compensated voltage with regard to the given input displacement. A feedforward neural network, which is trained by a feedback PID control module, is incorporated to the inverse hysteresis model to compensate unknown dynamics of the piezoelectric system. To show the feasibility of the proposed feedforward-feedback controller, some experiments have been carried out and the tracking performance was compared to that of simple PTD controller.

  • This paper is concerned with the active vibration controller design for the grid structure based on the positive position feedback (PPF) and the strain rate feedback (SRF) control. A new control methodology by the combination of the PPF and SRF control can suppress all the modes of the structure theoretically and can be easily implemented with analog circuits. The underlying concept for the design of the new controller is that the SRF controller stabilizes the modes higher than the second mode and the PPF controller stabilizes the fundamental mode which is destabilized by the SRF controller. In order for the new controller to be implemented succesfully, the collocated control is necessary. To this end, the piezoceramic sensor and actuator are located as close as possible, thus realizing the nearly collocated control. The combined PPF and ARF controller proves its effectiveness by experiments.

  • This paper is concerned with the active vibration control of grid structure by means of piezoceramic actuators and sensors. The control technique used in this paper is based on the positive position feedback(PPF) and the strain rate feedback(SRF) control, which have been successfully used for the vibration control of beam structures. A new control methodology is developed using the PPF and SRF controller of single-input single-output method. The PPF controller is used for the suppression of first bending mode and SRF controller is used for the suppression of higher vibration modes of grid structure. Electric circuits for the realization of control schemes are explained in detail. The control techniques prove its effectiveness by experiments.

  • There has been a recent surge of research interest on the smart structure. This paper presents active vibration control scheme of multi-mode forced vibration using piezoceramic sensors/actuators. The control scheme adopted is the Positive Position Feedback control. Among various vibration control techniques, PPF control technique makes use of generalized displacement measurements to accomplish vibration suppression. Two independent controllers are implemented to control the first and the second modes of the beam under external excitation. Experimental results for various damping ratio and feedback gains of the PPF controllers are compared with respect to the control efficiency. The results indicate that steady state vibration under wideband excitation can be controlled effectively when multiple sets of PZT sensors/actuators were used with PPF control technique.

  • We present the initial results of on-going research for building a novel Mobile Haptic Interface (MHI) that can provide an unlimited haptic workspace in large immersive virtual environments. When a user explores a large virtual environment, the MHI can sense the position and orientation of the user, place itself to an appropriate configuration, and deliver force feedback, thereby enabling a virtually limitless workspace. Our MHI (PoMHI v0.5) features with omnidirectional mobility, a collision-free motion planning algorithm, and force feedback for general environment models. We also provide experimental results that show the fidelity of our mobile haptic interface.
