Chitin was isolated from the residue of enzymatically hydrolyzed crab, Portunus trituberculatus, and further deacetylated by alkaline boiling to make chitosan. The physical properties of chitosan solution and its film forming properties were examined. The functional characteristics of chitosan film were compared to those of cellophane, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene (PE) films. The proximate chemical composition of chitin obtained from crab residue was 6.95% nitrogen, 0.3% crude ash and 4.57% moisture and the product yield was 12.8% based on a dry material basis. The degree of deacetylation of chitosan was $79{\sim}92%$ and $70{\sim}86%$ as determined by IR spectroscopy, and $70{\sim}86%$ as determined by colloid titration method each respectively. The chitosan at 1% acetic acid solution showed distinct pseudoplastic flow behavior. The flow behavior index and consistency index were 0.8886, 0.2084 $MPa{\cdot}s^n$ for 0.4% solution and 0.8498, 0.6190 $MPa{\cdot}s^n$ for 0.8% solution, respectively. The chitosan film had the highest tensile strength $(888 kg/cm^2)$ and water permeability $(100\;g/m^2{\cdot}24\;hrs)$ among the tested films, but relatively low elongation property (49%). It showed the similar tear strength (90kg/cm) and light permeability (87.7%) to other films tested in spite of the relatively high haze value (12.5%). As the thickness of chitosan film increased from 0.025 to 0.050 mm, the tensile strength of film decreased distictively, and the degree of elongation, tear strength, and water permeability of film also decreased slightly. Whereas the light permeability of film did not change and the haziness of film slightly increased by the increase of film thickness.

To study the catching efficiency of biodegradable trammel net for swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus), three types (biodegradable, monofilament and multifilament) of trammel nets were used in the field test, and the tests were carried out 16 times with two different mesh sizes (105mm and 160mm) in the Yeonpyeong fishing ground of Korea, 2009~2011. The catching efficiency of three type nets was analyzed by catch in number, catch in weight and average weight per individual of small and large size swimming crab by net types and mesh sizes. Statistical T-test was also carried out to verify the efficiency between the three types of nets. The results are as follows. The catch in number of swimming crab was 24,667 and formed about 81.0% of total catch. Of all swimming crab catch, small swimming crabs with less than 64mm in carapace length which is a prohibited landing size by law formed 48.1%, larger swimming crabs with more than 64mm in carapace length which is a landing size formed 51.9%. In 105mm mesh size trammel net test, the catch share in number of small size swimming crab by biodegradable trammel net was 47.5% in comparison with multifilament trammel net and 74.2% in comparison with monofilament trammel net, so biodegradable trammel net has more protective effects on small size swimming crab than other types of trammel nets. The protective effects for small size swimming crab by biodegradable trammel net was 25.8~52.5% in comparison with other types of trammel nets. The catch share in weight of large size swimming crab by biodegradable trammel net was 98.3% in comparison with multifilament trammel net and 92.3% in comparison with monofilament trammel net, so biodegradable trammel net has a similar catch efficiency to multifilament trammel net. The results of 160mm mesh size trammel net test have shown similar results of 105mm mesh size trammel net test. This study shows that biodegradable trammel net is a more useful fishing gear than multifilament and monofilament trammel net because biodegradable trammel net has lower catch rate than other types of nets in small size swimming crab and similar catch rate than multifilament trammel net which is a well used net by fishermen.
Changes in fishing ground of the large pair trawler were investigated by year, month and species off Korean waters. We used catch data by sea-block lat.${\times}$long.:$30^{\prime}{\times}30$) of the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) and monthly fishing production statistics of Korean statistic information service from 1990 to 2007. In the 1990s, the demersal fish like Larimichthys polyactis, Collichthys sp, Portunus trituberculatus and Muraenesox cinereus were the dominant species, and in the 2000s, they were changed from demersal fish into pelagic fish like Scomberomorus niphonius, Scomber japonicus, Engraulis japonicus and Todarodes pacificus. Species composition of catch showed temporal variation by cluster analysis deviding into 4 period, 1990-1994, 1995-2000, 2001-2003 and 2004-2007. Fishing ground in the 2000s was decreased up to 2/3 in the 1990s, while the density of catch in the fishing ground in 2000s was higher than the 1990s.

Experimental fishing was carried out to compare the catches of main species and bycatch according to the codend mesh size (raschel, 15mm, 25mm, 35mm, 45mm) of stow net on anchor in the coastal waters of Seocheon after manufacturing five kinds of fishing gears and commercial fishing boat (7.93 tons) was used for it. Anchovy (Engraulis japonicus), southern rough shrimp (Trachysalambria curvirostris), beka squid (Loligo beka), cuttle fish (Sepia esculenta), swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus) were dominant on the five kinds of experimental fishing gears. Southern rough shrimp was caught from all kinds of fishing gears and catches of anchovy was highest in the raschel codend, southern rough shrimp for 15mm, 25mm, 35mm codend and beka squid for 45mm codend. Bycatch proportion against total catches was 623,376g (28.7%) for 2,171,844g in raschel, 11,932g (1.7%) for 704,451g in 15mm, 3,616g (1.6%) for 221,432g in 25mm, 9,276g (4.9%) for 191,052g in 35mm and 2,724g (5.3%) for 51,431g in 45mm.
This study examined the community structure and temporal variation of the macro-crustaceans on Jangbong tidal flat, Incheon, Korea. Macro-crustaceans on this tidal flat were collected using a modified otter trawl from November 1999 to January 2001. The macro-crustaceans comprised 32 species, 7,741 individuals, and 29,211.3 gWWt during the study period. The Jangbong tidal flat was dominated numerically by three shrimp (Palaemon carinicauda, Crangon affinis, and Metapenaeus joyneri) and two portunid crabs (Charybdis japonica and Portunus trituberculatus). The macro-crustacean assemblages were divided into two different season and species groups based on the q-mode and r-mode clustering methods. In terms of q-mode, they consisted of a winter species group from December through April and a summer species group from May through November. The r-mode analysis showed that the species group visiting the tidal flat in winter was dominated numerically by palaemonid and crangonid shrimps, while a species group characterized by an abundance of portunid crabs and penaeid shrimps was more frequent in spring, summer, and autumn. In conclusion, our study revealed distinct temporal variation in the tidal flat use by macro-crustaceans around Jangbong Island, Incheon, Korea.

This study was conducted to investigate the attractant substances of different solvent fractions of mackerel and tuna viscera. Mackerel and tuna viscera were extracted with methanol and the resultant were fractionated with n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and water. The chemical compounds such as free amino acid, fatty acid, nucleotide related compounds contents were estimated for mackerel, tuna viscera and various fractions. These fractions were also subjected to attracting experiments in water tank to estimate attracting effects. The aqueous fractions of mackerel and tuna viscera showed the highest attraction effect on swimming crab. The major chemical compounds of the aqueous fractions were histidine, taurine, cysteine, glutamic acid, inosine monophosphate (IMP) and inosine (HxR) for mackerel and arginine, glutamic acid, aspartic aid, alanine, IMP and hypoxanthin (Hx). Results indicated that higher polarity compounds, such as amino acid and nucleotide related compounds have higher attraction activities than nonpolar substances such as neutral lipid.
Evidence highlighting the importance of gut microbiota in biodiversity conservation is growing; however, gut bacteria in South Korean wildlife have not been well identified. Using a culture-dependent isolation method, we identified the gut bacteria from Korean aquatic wildlife: the gazami crab (Portunus trituberculatus), Korean striped bitterling (Acheilognathus yamatsutae), oily bitterling (Acheilognathus koreensis), leopard mandarin fish (Siniperca scherzeri), Korean dark chub (Zacco koreanus), diving beetle (Cybister lewisianus), spotted steed (Abbottina springeri), and Korean spotted sleeper (Odontobutis obscura interrupta). We identified 18 strains previously unrecorded in South Korea by comparing 16S rRNA gene sequences of isolates against the EzBioCloud and National Institute of Biological Resources(NIBR) databases. The isolated strains belong to the phyla Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria. We also assessed for phylogenetic relatedness, Gram-stain reaction, colony and cell morphology, and biochemical characteristics. Basic information and 16S rRNA gene sequences of the isolates were registered in NIBR, and NIBR accession numbers are provided.
The author succeeded in rearing the young blue crab from the first stage of zoe ato the true crab shape, and during this time he observed their growth and metamorphosis. The relationships between the number of eggs carried by female crabs (E) and the carapace width (C) and body weight (W) are shown as follows: E= 27.9049C-281.8155, E=0.5682 W-116.4606. There are five zoeal stages and a megalopa in the complete larval development of the blue crab. Water temperature in rearing aquaria ranged from 21.4 to $25.2^{\circ}C$. The duration of each zoeal stage was two days on the average. After the fifth moulting, the zoea becomes megalopa and 5 to 6 days later the megalopa moults and develops into the first stage of adult crab shape. The carapace width of megalopa measured about 1.70 mm and the carapace length, from the tip of the rostrum to the posterior dorsal margin of the carapace, was about 2.78 mm on the average. The carapace width and length of the first crab, 18 days after hatching, measured about 4.48 mm and 2.62 mm respectively. After two days, the first crab moulted and grew into the second crab with about 6.47 mm in carapace width and 4.66 mm in carapace length. The larval rearing in the outdoor tank shelved better results than in the indoor aquarium. The highest mortality occurred when the first stage of zoea moulted into the second stage. Percentage of crabs which survived, from the first crab to the ninth crab stages, was about $55\%$. The relationships between rearing days (D) and the carapace width (C), carapace length (L) and body weight (W) of the crab stages during 40 days of rearing are shown as follows. Carapace width, Indoor: C=1.1250D+1.7227 Outdoor C=1.3465D -0.2449 Carapace length, Indoor: L=0.6654D+1.6712 Outdoor: L=0.7893D+0.6919 Body Weight, Outdoor: $$W=1.15e^{0.12423D}$$ Indoor: $$W=6.759\times10^{-2}D^{1.2598}$$ (9-19 day old crabs) Outdoor: $$W=4.136\times10^{-2}D^{1.6024}$$ (21-40 day old crabs) During the crab stage, the following relationships between the number of moulting times and the carapace width (C), carapace length (L) and body weight (W) were found as follows: $$C=5.2e^{0.28119N}$$$$L=3.65e^{0.26372N}$$$$W= 0.14e^{0.7037N}$$ The relationships between the carapace length (L) and the carapace width (C) and body weight (W) of the crab stages are shown as follows: Carapace length, mm Formula 2.62-27.17 L=1.6864C-1.0387 7.47-18.53 $$W=9.367\times10^{-5}C^{3.5567}$$ 22.11-27.17 $$W=3.406\times10^{-5}C{3.8571}$$
Seasonal and annual variation in the species composition of bag-net catch in the coastal waters of Incheon, Korea were examined from April 2000 to November 2004. To analyze seasonal variation of the fisheries data, we implemented a self-organizing map(SOM), an unsupervised artificial neural network, with the catch amount of 97 species. Over 5 years, we caught 68 species of fish, 23 species of crustaceans and six species of cephalopods. The total number of fish species were gradually increased during the study period. The number of species was higher during the spring than the autumn. The SOM identified four groups of the sampling months based on seasonal changes in communities. In the spring, the dominant species were Leptochela gracilis and Pholis fangi; whereas, in the autumn, Engraulis japonicus and Portunus trituberculatus were dominant species in bag-net catch. Our results will be used to estimate seasonal and annual variation in fisheries resources of Korean coastal waters.
Nitrogenous constituents in the extract of 3 species of raw and boiled crabs, tenner crab (Chionoeretes opilio elongatus), horsehair crab (Erimacrus isenbecki), and blue crab (Portunus trituberculatus) caught in the Korean adjacent sea, were analyzed and compared their compositions with the sex and the tissues, body meat, leg meat, and viscera. The crabs contained about 3% of the extractive nitrogenous constituents in the tissues, meat and viscera. The free amino acid compositions were commonly featured a high content of arginine, taurine, proline, and glycine regardless of the differences in species and tissues. Free amino acids and quarternary bases were greatly increased in hot water extraction while nucleotides were slightly diminished. Glycine betaine and trimethylaminoxide were accounted for above 30% of the total extractive nitrogenous constituents. Arginine, taurine, proline, glycine, glycine betaine, and trimethylaminoxide which abundant in the meats and viscera of the crabs were estimated to greatly contribute directly or indirectly toward appearing the characteristic crabs taste.
