To evaluate the influence of the external force components on the littoral currents in the Gusipo beach, Jeonbuk, West Coast of Korea where a wide tidal sand flat developed, a coupled hydrodynamic model considered real time tidal currents and wave-induced currents was constructed in which the EFDC for tides and tidal currents, the SWAN for waves and the SHORECIRC for wave-induced currents were used as the hindcasting models. A series of field observations for tides, tidal currents and incident waves were carried out and especially to observe the littoral currents in the tidal sand flat, the GPS mounted and light weight drogues were used. Also wind data were collected from the adjacent weather station. To analyze the littoral current components, the numerical drogue tracking results considered real time winds, tides and waves were compared with the field drogue data. The drift speed of numerical drogues was reproduced as the range of 68.0~105.2% compared with the field data and the velocity error of main direction component showed a good result as -16.7~10.0%. As a result, in the mild slope tidal flat including wide surf zone, the tides and winds were the major affection component of the littoral currents, on the other hand, the wave-induced currents seemed the minor component when the incident wave heights were relatively small.

In this study, we conducted real-time measurement at the ship arrivals and departures at the port and at a constant speed of 150 rpm for exhaust emissions from a main engine installed on the training ship, HANBADA, of Korea Maritime University. The result showed that the concentration of nitrogen oxide was measured in the range of 800 ppm to 1,000 ppm at constant speed mode. On the other hand, the concentration of nitrogen oxide during ship arrivals and departures was significantly fluctuated between 210 ppm and 1,230 ppm. And, the concentration of carbon oxide at the arrivals and departures was also larger than that of at constant speed mode. These results show that the ship maneuvering skills to prevent a sudden load change of main engine at the arrivals and departures of ship is needed. Additionally, it means that the difference of exhaust emissions generated between the constant speed mode and the arrival/departure has to be considered when invented many technologies are adopted into the reduction technologies of air pollutants from ships.

When sea tide and wave velocity change, the behavior of silt protectors underwater changes, and a hydraulic force exceeding the anchor wave force is applied. In this study, the movement mechanism of a silt protector has been analyzed using the mass-spring method. The initial position of the silt protector was in the Jindo area near Gwangpo Port (742-1, Gyupori, Chongdo-myeon, Jindo-gun, Jeonnam, Korea). The tension required to exceed the holding power of the anchor was 0.05 m/s at 318 sec., 0.15 m/s at 77 sec., 0.25 m/s at 43 sec., and 0.3 m/s at 37 sec.. As the anchor started to move from the sea floor and the tide speed increased to 0.01 m/s, anchor movement start time shortened by an average of 11.2 sec.. Compared with when tide was the only affecting factor, the silt protector and anchor were found to have moved 19.7 % at 0.1 m/s, 7.6 % at 0.15 m/s, 5.8 % at 0.2 m/s, 4.3 % at 0.25 m/s and 2.8 % at 0.3 m/s, showing an increase. When wave effect was added to the tide, anchor movement started when the flow rate was slow 7.6 % of the time. With a high flow velocity, anchor movement started without any significant difference less than 4.3 % of the time. When tide speed exceeded 0.13 m/s and the direction of the waves matched, the silt protector was not able to perform due to collisions with surrounding sea structures. When installing a silt protector, the fluid flow situation and the silt protector situation must be carefully analyzed using the mass-spring method to apply the result found in this study.

HNS accidents involve large-scale fires and explosions, causing numerous human casualties and extreme environmental pollution in the surrounding area. The widespread diffusion of effects should be prevented through rapid decision making. In this study, a high-quality, standardized, and digitized HNS accident databases has been generated based on the HNS standard code proposed. Furthermore, the HNS Accident Tracking System (HATS) was applied and implemented to allow for systematic integration management and sharing. In addition, statistical analysis was performed on 76 cases of domestic HNS accident data collected over 23 years using HATS. In Korea, an average of 3.3 HNS accidents occurred each year and major HNS accident factors were Springs (41 %), Aprons (51 %), Chemical Carriers (49 %), Crew's Fault (45 %) and Xylenes (12 %). (The number in parentheses is the percentage of HNS accident factors for each HNS accident classification)

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted the International Convention on the Control of Ships' Air Pollutants and Discharge as it became interested in environmental issues such as global warming and air pollution. In addition, a special bill on the improvement of air quality, including in port areas, has recently been enacted in Korea to reduce the amount of fine dust generated. As part of such fine dust reduction measures, feasibility studies have been underway on converting diesel engines into battery electric propulsion systems that do not cause fine dust and emissions. Since the battery electric propulsion system can easily utilize renewable energy sources, and does not generate exhaust gas due to combustion of fuel, small coastal ferries with battery electric propulsion systems that use renewable energy have been operating in Europe and the U.S. for several years. However, they have not been introduced in Korea. Therefore, in this study, we selected small coastal ferries in Korea as target ferries, and performed simulations to study the applicability of electric propulsion with batteries linked to solar power systems. Based on the results, we want to confirm the applicability of battery electric propulsion.

In response to possible HNS (Hazardous and Noxious Substance) spill accident, HNS spill accident scenario and response scenario were developed. The accident area listed in scenarios is the coastal area of Busan, and scenario for possible accident in the designated area and strategies to respond the accident were developed, respectively. The scenario for accident was developed by designating HNS spill according to risk evaluation of HNS and analysis of HNS spill probability along the coastal area of Busan, and then estimating possible and potential impact from the accident. The scenario for response has been suggested as a systematical responding operations in order to effectively reduce the estimated impact from the accident. The possible HNS spill accident on the seas around Busan, has been designated by the spillage of 1,000ton of xylene due to collision accident in Gamcheon Port, and the possible impacts occurred by the accident has been simulated with the help of the atmospheric and oceanic dispersion model of xylene. In the responding scenario for the accident, a phased strategies regarding emergency rescue of peoples, protection and recovery of xylene, protective measures for the responders, and post management of the accident have been suggested.

In this paper, the design procedure of substructure of the steel-type breakwater was described and the actual foundation design was performed for the test bed. The site investigation was executed at the Osan-port area, in Uljin, Gyeongbuk, where the steeltype detached breakwater is constructed. The foundation mainly depends on the lateral load and uplift force due to the wave force. Since the superstructure is stuck out about 9.0m from the ocean bed, the foundation must resist on the lateral force and bending moment. After considering various factors, the foundation type of this structure was determined by the steel pipe pile(${\varphi}711{\times}t12mm$). On the stability of pile foundation, the safety factors of the pile on the compressive, lateral and uplift forces were grater than the minimum factor of safety. The displacements of pile under the working load were evaluated as the values below the permissible ones. Based on the subgrade reaction method, we evaluated the relationship of subgrade reaction and displacement for the lateral and the vertical directions in the layers. The structural analyses along with the foundation were perfomed and the effect of pile foundations were compared quantitatively.

The purpose of this study is to improve the current vessel departure control regulations to prevent traffic congestion after the lifting of vessel departure controls due to restricted visibility. AIS data was collected to analyze the traffic volume of normal traffic flow and after departure control. A statistical test was conducted to confirm the difference in traffic volume at peak hours according to whether or not departure control was used. The results of the t-test showed that there was a significant difference in traffic volume among groups of less than 10,000 tons in gross tonnage. However, the Mann-Whitney test showed no difference in traffic volume regardless of vessel control. Small and medium-sized vessels of less than 10,000 tons after departure control increased in traffic volume by 142% over normal traffic, and it was concluded that traffic congestion resulted as these small and medium-sized vessels were departing at the same time as large vessels of more than 10,000 tons. In order to prevent vessel collision accidents due to traffic congestion, it is suggested that the navigability of vessels less than 160 m or less than 10,000 tons should be improved.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of fishery in offshore wind farms and evaluate the risk linked to the presence of turbines and submarine cables in these areas. With this objective, we studied an offshore wind farm in the Southwest Sea and the current state of vessels in the surrounding National Fishing Port. The risk assessment criteria for 22 fishing gears and methods were set by referring to the fishing boats; thereafter, the risk was assessed by experts. The fishing gears and methods that could be safely operated (i.e., associated with low risk) in the offshore wind farm were: single-line fishing, jigging, and the anchovy lift net. The risk was normal so that it is possible to operate, but the fishing gears and methods that need attention are: the set long line, drifting long line, troll line, squid rip hook, octopus pot, webfoot octopus pot, coastal fish pot, stow net on stake, winged stow net, stationary gill net, and drift gill net. Moreover, the fishing gears and methods difficult to operate in the of shore wind farm (i.e., associated with high risk) were: the dredge, beam trawl, and purse seine. Finally, those associated with very high risk and that should not be allowed in offshore wind farms were: the stow net, anchovy drag net, otter trawl, Danish seine, and bottom pair trawl.

There is a growing interest this paper for ocean sensing where autonomous vehicles can play an essential role in assisting engineers, researchers, and scientists with environmental monitoring and collecting oceanographic data. This study was conducted to develop a rigid sail for the autonomous sailing drone. Our study aims to numerically analyze the aerodynamic characteristics of curvy twin sail and compare it with wing sail. Because racing regulations limit the sail shape, only the two-dimensional geometry (2D) was open for an optimization. Therefore, the first objective was to identify the aerodynamic performance of such curvy twin sails. The secondary objective was to estimate the effect of the sail's spacing and shapes. A viscous Navier-Stokes flow solver was used for the numerical aerodynamic analysis. The 2D aerodynamic investigation is a preliminary evaluation. The results indicated that the curvy twin sail designs have improved lift, drag, and driving force coefficient compared to the wing sails. The spacing between the port and starboard sails of curvy twin sail was an important parameter. The spacing is 0.035 L, 0.07 L, and 0.14 L shows the lift coefficient reduction because of dramatically stall effect, while flow separation is improved with spacing is 0.21 L, 0.28 L, and 0.35 L. Significantly, the spacing 0.28 L shows the maximum high pressure at the lower area and the small low pressure area at leading edges. Therefore, the highest lift was generated.
