  • The modern ports have become multi-functionalized and network-centralized over time. Recently the development of industry in the land behind the port area has become very important for port itself. Furthermore, the port functions as a finance center and an integrated function of the main bank of the world. It will be necessary for Inchon port to pursue the policy for building itself as a hub center for logistics integration and building network in the region of Northern-East Asia and Seoul Capital City area in order for Inchon port to support and develop various industries through utilizing each aspect of the industrial complex in these areas. By doing this, it will act as a policy for strengthening competiveness for Inchon port. The sharp increase of cargo movement from rapidly developing Industries in China will become a good opportunity for strengthening the competitiveness of Inchon port. However, considering the characteristics of the ports competitiveness, this policy must quickly overcome the difficulties of Inchon port.

  • In the midst of worldwide response to climate change, the advanced ports including LA/LB(Los Angeles/Long Beach) has started to reduce carbon emission from port area which has not been targets of interests in the worldwide cooperation. Recently, the Port of Busan has started to reduce carbon emission from the port area under the Green Port Strategy in Korea. However, the low-carbon port management increases the cost of port management and negatively impacts the port competitiveness in the short term. Therefore, the Busan Port Authority is carrying out the low-carbon projects directly and has not transfer the cost to the port users, such as shipowers, cargo owners and terminal operators. However, the Port Authority of LA/LB has transferred the cost at low-carbon port management to customers of port. In this study, comparative analysis on cost of low-carbon port management at Busan and LA/LB is carried out for sustainable port management.

  • This study aims to propose an assessment tool of port service quality (PSQ) in the context of container transport logistics (CTLs), by taking the perspectives from port users. The CTLs defined in this study are the relevant activities of serving the physical flows of a container box from a point of origin via a container port to a point of destination. To address the ports' role in collaboration between its channel members in CTLs, the PSQ measures for all port user groups (i.e. common PSQ measures) are selected based on the relevant CTLs activities involved by port, and its users within terminal/port area as well as throughout the CTLs chain. An importance-performance analysis (IPA) is applied as a diagnostic tool to analyse the status quo of Busan Port in CTLs contexts, by comparing the importance and performance (IP ) scores against each individual CTLs criterion. The findings from the IPA reveal that port managers and policy makers at the Busan Port should concentrate on six PSQ measures (i.e. SR1, SR4, ITS1, VAS1, VAS4, ICI3) to enhance PSQ in CTLs. However, four measures (i.e. ITS2, ITS3, ITS4, VAS2) are identified as a possible overkill, indicating an area of inefficiency where a remedial action of the cost-cutting decision is necessary. On the other hand, the Busan port shows an outstanding performance on four measures such as SR2, SR3, ICI1 and ICI2. The measures are not only important but also high performance. The study findings provide managerial guidance to port managers in Busan Port, in view of searching for managerial and operational strategies for sustainable port growth.

  • Hydrogen has reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the main cause of global warming, and is emerging as an eco-friendly energy source for ships. Hydrogen is a substance with a lower flammability limit (LFL) of 4 to 75% and a high risk of explosion. To be used for ships, it must be sufficiently safe against leaks. In this study, we analyzed the effect of changes in the area of the air inlet / vent port on the ventilation performance when hydrogen leaks occur in the hydrogen tank storage room. The area of the air inlet / vent port is 1A = 740 mm × 740 mm, and the size and position can be easily changed on the surface of the storage chamber. Using ANSYS CFX ver 18.1, which is a CFD commercial software, the area of the air inlet / vent port was changed to 1A, 2A, 3A, and 5A, and the hydrogen mole fraction in the storage chamber when the area changed was analyzed. Consequently, the increase in the area of the air inlet port further reduced the concentration of the leaked hydrogen as compared with that of the vent port, and improved the ventilation performance of at least 2A or more from the single air inlet port. As the area of the air inlet port increased, hydrogen was uniformly stratified at the upper part of the storage chamber, but was out of the LFL range. However, simply increasing the area of the vent port inadequately affected the ventilation performance.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the competitiveness between Busan New Port and Shanghai's New Yangshan Port, on an island 20 miles off the Chinese mainland coast. For this aim, the paper examines backgrounds of Yangshan Port construction and its related projects, namely, Donghai Bridge and Luchao Logistics Park including operation strategies of Yangshan New Deepwater Port. The main results of this paper are as follows: Busan New Port has competitive advantage over Yangshan Port in terms of ideal location, especially in Asia-North America route, and connection between terminal and hinterland logistics park. Because Busan New Port is operated by fully on-dock system. Nevertheless, Yangshan Port has more strength in its centrality, port tariff and port productivity, which are represented by crane productivity, quay productivity and area productivity. Therefore, Korean ports are recommended by transformation from cargo attraction-type to cargo generation-type port through early activation of port logistics center along with Free Economic Zone.
