  • A sol-gel method was applied to coat TiO$_2$ on porous silica prepared using slurry foaming method from silica. from the results of XRD, SEM, and BET, the anatase phase was firstly observed at the coated supports with the heated of 50$0^{\circ}C$. The coated supports with the heated of $700^{\circ}C$ had the maximum anatase peak, and the particle size of coated TiO$_2$ was about 1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Bending strength and gas permeability of the porous silica were measured for the feasibility as a catalytic supports. In case of the uncoated porous materials with the strength of 2.4 MPa, the strength increased to 3.9∼4.3 MPa after the coating process regardless of the heating temperature. On the other hand, the permeability of the uncoated porous materials decreased from 770${\times}$10$^{-13}$ $m^2$ to 363${\times}$10$^{-13}$ $m^2$ after the coating process, and it decreased with the increasing heating temperature.

  • Spherical porous silica supports modified with titanium or zirconium alkoxides were prepared, and allyl groups were chemically attached to the titanized or zirconized silica supports, and the product was cross-polymerized with a double bond containing cellulose derivative to yield new CSPs (chiral stationary phases). Magic angle spinning 13C solid state NMR and elemental analysis were used to characterize the CSPs. The performances of the chiral stationary phases were examined in comparison with a conventional chiral stationary phase. Spherical porous silica particles modified with 3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate of cellulose were prepared and used as the conventional chiral stationary phase. Chromatographic data were collected for a few pairs of enantionmers in heptane/2-propanol mixed solvents of various compositions with the three chiral columns and the results were comparatively studied. The separation performance of the chrial phase made of the titanized silica was better than the others, and the separation performance of the chiral phase of the zirconized silica was comparable to that of the conventional chiral phase. The superiority of titanized silica over bare or zirconized silica in chiral separation seemed to be owing to the better yield of crosslinking (monitored by increase of carbon load) for titanized silica than for the others.

  • Porous ceramics were manufactured using the foaming method for the development of inorganic insulating materials. Silica fume and SiO2 were used as main raw materials, and bentonite was used as a rapid setting agent for uniform structure formation of porous ceramics. The porous ceramics were sintered at 1200℃, and porosity, density, compressive strength, microstructure and thermal conductivity were analyzed. As the content of silica fume to SiO2 of the porous ceramics increased 70 to 90 %, the specific gravity increased from 0.63 to 0.69, and the compressive strength increased from 9.41 Mpa to 12.86 Mpa. But, the porosity showed a tendency to decrease from 72.07 % to 70.82 %, contrary to the specific gravity. As a result of measuring the thermal conductivity, the porous ceramic with a silica fume content of 70 % showed a thermal conductivity of 0.75 to 0.72 W/m·K at 25 to 800℃, respectively, and, another that a silica fume content of 90 % showed a 0.66~0.86 W/m·K. So the lower the silica f ume content, the lower the thermal conductivity, which was conf irmed to be consistent with porosity result. As a result of microstructure analysis using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), pores in the range of tens to hundreds ㎛ were observed inside and outside the porous ceramic, and it was confirmed that the pore distribution was relatively uniform.

  • The polycarbonate (PC)-based optical diffusers for direct-lit LED backlight unit were prepared by using extrusion compounding followed by compression molding process. The application of inorganic porous silica particles as a diffusing agent in addition to conventional poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) beads was attempted, and the optical, thermal, and mechanical properties of the prepared diffusers were investigated. The morphological observations revealed that the diffusing agents could be uniformly dispersed in the PC matrix without agglomeration by high shear stress generated during extrusion process. The incorporation of the porous silica particles mixed with PMMA beads remarkably enhanced the luminance uniformity with respect to both location and view angle for the diffuser, while minimizing the reduction in the absolute luminance, as compared with the diffuser containing only PMMA beads. In addition, thermal and mechanical properties of the diffusers were shown to be improved upon addition of the porous silica particles.

  • Oxidation behaviors of porous silicon were investigated by the measurement of area of $SiO_2$ vibrational peaks in FT-IR spectra during thermal oxidation of porous silicon at corresponding temperatures. Visible photoluminescent porous silicon samples were obtained from an electrochemical etch of n-type silicon of resistivity between 1-10 ${\Omega}/cm$. The etching solution was prepared by adding an equal volume of pure ethanol to an aqueous solution of HF. The porous silicon was illuminated with a 300 W tungsten lamp for the duration of etch. Etching was carried out as a two-electrode galvanostatic procedure at applied current density of 200 $mA/cm^2$ for 5 min. The porosity of samples prepared was about 80%. After formation of porous silicon, the samples were thermally oxidized at $100^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$, and $400^{\circ}C$, respectively. The growth rate of $SiO_2$ layer of porous silicon was investigated by using FT-IR spectroscopy. The effect of oxidation of porous silicon was presented.

  • For application in adsorption process, we synthesized silica nanospheres by Stober method, and silica particles with wrinkled surface as well as macroporous silica particles were also fabricated by utilizing emulsion droplet as micro-reactors, followed by modification of the particle surface using suitable coupling agents containing amine groups. These particles exhibited improved adsorption capacity for heavy metal ions and anionic dyes, which were difficult to be removed by conventional silica particles without surface modification. Anionic dye, methyl orange could be removed almost completely by adsorption using porous silica particles modified using APTES. The adsorption efficiency of heavy metal like copper ions was close to 100%, when porous silica was used as adsorbent particles modified with AAPTS.

  • Thermal insulation material was prepared by cross-linking chemical reaction of silica aerogel and epoxy resin, which has a high porous and vacant properties. The structural, mechanical, and thermal properties were analyzed in order to verify its application for industrial and electrical applications. The thermal conductivities were changed from 115 mW/mK to 75 mW/mK by reducing the contents of nano-porous silica areogel powders. The compressive loading is also decreased by increasing the contents of silica aerogels by 20 wt% in aerogel/epoxy composites. It is concluded that the formulated composite materials can be applied to building materials, electronics parts, and heavy industries.

  • A porous $\alpha$-alumina tube of 2.5 mm O.D. and 1.9 mm I.D. was used as the support of an inorganic membrane. Macropores of the tube, about 150 nm in size, were plugged with silica formed by thermal decomposition of tetraethylorthosilicate at $600^{\circ}C$. The forced cross-flow CVD method that reactant was evacuated through the porous wall of the support was very effective in plugging macropores. The H$_2$ permeance of the prepared membrane was of the order of $10^{-8}/ molㆍs^{-1}/ㆍm^{-2}/. Pa{-1}$/, while the $N_2$ permeance was below $10^{-11}/ molㆍs^{-1}/ㆍm^{-2}/ㆍPa^{-1}$/ at $600^{\circ}C$. This was comparable to that of silica-modified Vycor glass whose size was 4 nm.

  • In order to lower porosity of the porous silica, titanium alkoxide solution was filled in the pore of silica in the heating-vacuum condition. The specific surface area of modified samples was decreased effectively from 900 m$^2$/g to 100 m$^2$/g. (The aggregation phenomena in modified samples were improved fairly.) Samples were heated at 600 , and then the titanium alkoxide in the pore was decomposed completely to titanium oxide from TGA-DTA measurement. From SEM result, it was evident that titanium oxide did not coat the surface of the silica. The modified samples were analyzed using SEM, DTA-TGA, BET, and UV-visible spectrometer.

  • Silica aerogels are attracting attention due to certain outstanding properties such as low bulk density, low thermal conductivity, high surface area, high porosity, high transparency and flexibility. Due to these extraordinary properties of aerogels, they have become a promising candidate in thermal superinsulation. The silica-based aerogels are brittle in nature, which constrains their large scale-application. It is necessary to achieve transparency and flexibility of silica-based aerogels at the same time and with the same porous structure for optical field applications. Therefore, the present review focuses on the different sol-gel synthesis parameters and precursors in the synthesis of flexible as well as transparent silica aerogels. Also, a brief overview of reported flexible and transparent aerogels with some important properties and applications is provided.
