Using a three-dimensional numerical code, B3R developed for nuclide transport of an arbitrary length of decay chain in the buffer between the canister and adjacent rock in a high- level radioactive waste repository by adopting a finite difference method utilizing the control- volume scheme, some illustrative calculations have been done. A linear sorption isotherm, nuclide transport due to diffusion in the buffer and the rock matrix, and advection and dispersion along thin rigid parallel fractures existing in a saturated porous rock matrix as well as diffusion through the fracture wall into the matrix is assumed. In such kind of repository, buffer and rock matrix are known to be important physico-chemical harriers in nuclide retardation. To show effects of buffer and rock matrix on nuclide transport in HLW repository and also to demonstrate usefulness of B3R, several cases of breakthrough curves as well as three- dimensional plots of concentration isopleths associated with these two barriers are introduced for a typical case of decay chain of $^{234}$ Ulongrightarrow$^{230}$ Thlongrightarrow$^{226}$ Ra, which is the most important chain as far as the human environment is concerned.

Three-dimensional dynamic analysis of underground openings subjected to explosive loadings considering the effects of water saturation is carried out in this study. The problem considered in this study is an unlined circular tunnel subjected to a finite cylindrical charge placed at the center of the proposed tunnel. The surrounding rock mass is assumed to be the limestone with 13.5% of porosity. Two calculations are compared using an identical explosive charge; the first in dry rock of 13.5% porosity, the second in the identical rock, but in a fully saturated condition. It is shown that underground openings in saturated porous medium could be significantly more vulnerable to the potential damages associated with high motions and shear failure than those in dry medium.

According to the Korean Design Code for port and harbor facilaties, bearing capacity of rubble mound under eccentric and inclined load is calculated by the simplified Bishop method, and strength parameters are recommended to be c=0.2kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and ø=35$^{\circ}$for standard rubble if the compressive strength of parent rock is greater than 300kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, quoting from research results by Jun-ichi Mizukami(1991), But this facts have never been certified in Korea because there was not large-scale triaxial test apparatus until 2000 in Korea. Firstly in Korea, the large-scale triaxial test (sample diameter, 30cm and height, 60cm) on the rubble originated from porous basalt rock in North-Cheju was accomplished. Then strength parameters for basalt rubble produced in North-Cheju are recommended to be c=0.3kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and ø=36$^{\circ}$if the compressive strength of parent rock is greater than 400kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$.
As the flow velocity and Reynolds number increase in rockfill porous media, the flow deviates from Darcy conditions. In this study, the permeability tests of rock column specimen and laboratory gabion weir model were carried out to investigate a head loss behaviour of flow through rockfill deposition in small river artificial recharge. Through column test, the nonlinear relationships between flow velocity and hydraulic gradient and coefficients were determined and the correlation formula of hydraulic mean radius and coefficients was proposed. The flow velocities and discharges in voids estimated by proposed equations were well matched with the measured values of laboratory gabion weir model.
Anisotropy observed in sedimentary rock such as sandstone is mainly caused by existence of bedding consequently influencing on its hydraulic characteristics. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of locally changing pore structure due to bedding on the hydraulic anisotropy of sandstone, in terms of localized porosity. X-ray CT scan is applied to observe the internal pore structures which is hard to be seen by other experimental methods. Permeability test is also conducted for samples cored at every $15^{\circ}$ from $0^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$ with respect to bedding plane. As a result, the permeability anisotropy is manifest having 1.8 of anisotropy ratio ($k_{90^{\circ}}/k_{0^{\circ}}$) and corresponds with the anisotropy of porosity due to bedding.
Radionuclide released from corroded container migrates through groundwater flow pathway in the underground rock. Therefore it is important to study the groundwater flow analysis for total system performance assessment of a HLW repository. In this study assuming a geological change of underground rock in future, the two dimensional groundwater flow analysis is done by the NAMMU, the assessment code for groundwater flow in porous media. Assuming the hypothetical repository with the reactivation of fault in the vicinity of it, the effect of change in aperture and permeability by reactivation of fault around a repository on groundwater pathway is studied.
High porous AlO(OH) gel is used in precursor of ceramic material, coating material and porous catalyst. For use of these, not only physiochemical control for particle morphology, pore characteristic and peptization but also studies of synthetic method for preparation of high porous AlO(OH) gel were required. In this study, high porous AlO(OH) gel was prepared through the aging and filtration process of aluminum hydroxides gel precipitated by the hydrolysis reaction of $Na_2CO_3$ solution and $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ and $Na_2SO_4$ mixed solution. In this process, optimum synthetic condition of AlO(OH) gel having excellent pore volume as studying the effect of hydrolysis pH on gel precipitates has been studied. Hydrolysis pH brought about numerous changes on crystal morphology, surface area, pore volume and pore size. Physiochemical properties of gel were investigated as using XRD, TEM, TG/DTA, FT-IR and $N_2$ BET method.
Some gases can be formed into hydrate by physical combination with water under appropriate temperature and pressure condition. Besides them, it was found that the pore size of the sediments can affect the formation and dissociation of hydrate. In this study, formation temperatures of carbon dioxide and methane hydrate have been measured using isobaric method to investigate the effects of flow rates of gases on formation condition of hydrate in porous rock samples. The flow rates of gases were controlled using a mass flow controller. To minimize Memory effect, system temperature increased for the dissociation of gas hydrates and re-established the initial saturation. The results show that the formation temperature of hydrate decreases with increasing the injection flow rate of gas. This indicates that the velocity of gas in porous media may act as kinds of inhibitor for the formation of hydrate.
Hydro-environmental impact assessments (HEIA) in tunnel constructions have been performed through various methods including preliminary investigations, field tests, numerical simulations, and monitoring. Specially, it is very important to evaluate quantitatively groundwater inflows into tunnels as well as drawdowns caused by tunnelling. Obvious definitions between porous and fractured rock media in hvdrogeologic properties of study regions must be needed to execute HEIA for rational tunnel construction in fractured bedrocks. In this paper, we propose a HEIA on tunnel constructions in fractured rocks media resulted from various hydrogeologic field tests and numerical models on given regions and determination of systematic order, i.e. the technical road map (TRM) of HEIA. These systematic HEIAs are expected to be usefully applied to base data in tunnel construction in fractured rock media.
Excavation of an opening in a saturated porous rock may lead to the development of pore pressure around the opening due to the redistribution of initial rock stresses. The built-up of pore pressure, in turn, may affect the mechanical behavior of rock mass and give the different pattern of stress distribution around the opening from that of the case where the coupling is neglected. In this study, the short time response of an opening excavated in saturated ground under anisotropic initial stress conditions was investigated numerically. Not on the wall of opening but at a short distance from the wall, the tangential stresses were peak during the short period after excavation when the hydro-mechanical coupling is considered.
