  • The gas jet from a coaxial porous injector for two-phase flows is discharged radially from the porous surface, which encloses the center liquid jet. Several hot-firing test using ethanol/nitrous oxide propellants was conducted to analyze the effect of oxidizer/fuel ratio on the combustion performance, and the uncertainty analysis was performed for the results. The characteristic velocity was affected by oxidizer/fuel ratio similarly with the results of CEA calculation except that the maximum characteristic velocity was appeared in the stoichiometric ratio. The characteristic velocity efficiency was increased as the oxidizer/fuel ratio increases.

  • To increase freeze-thaw resistance of porous concrete, this study examined physical properties of polymer by replacing paste used as a binding material with polymer, using unsaturated polyester and epoxy resin, and changing the mixing ratio of polymer. According to the result of this study, when the mixing ratio of resin paste to aggregates was 11 to 16%, voids volume was 33 to 37% and unit weight was about 1620 to 1720kg/$m^3$. In comparison with previous studies using cement paste, voids volume increased by about 7 to 16%, while unit weight decreased by about 100 to 300kg/$m^3$. Compressive strength was 90 to 155kg/$cm^2$ at the age of 7 days, which was 5-40kg/$cm^2$ bigger than porous concrete using cement paste. From a viewpoint of freeze-thaw resistance, it was identified that pluse velocity fell by 0.23km/sec, about 7% of the original velocity, when the cycle of freeze-thaw was repeated 300 times. In spite of 300 repetitions of the cycle, relative dynamic modulus of elasticity was more than 60%, which suggested that its freeze-thaw resistance was more excellent compared with the result that relative dynamic modulus of elasticity of porous concrete using cement paste was 60 % or less under the condition of 80 repetitions of freeze-thaw cycle.

  • In this study, porous electrospun carbon fibers were prepared by electrospinning with PAN and $MgCl_2$, as a MgO precursor. MgO was selected as a substrate because of its chemical and thermal stability, no reaction with carbon, and ease of removal after carbonization by dissolving out in acidic solutions. $MgCl_2$ was mixed with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) solution as a precursor of MgO with various weight ratios of $MgCl_2$/PAN. The average diameter of porous electrospun carbon fibers increased from 1.3 to 3 ${\mu}m$, as the $MgCl_2$ to PAN weight ratio increased. During the stabilization step, $MgCl_2$ was hydrolyzed to MgOHCl by heat treatment. At elevated temperature of 823 K for carbonization step, MgOHCl was decomposed to MgO. Specific surface area and pore structure of prepared electrospun carbon fibers were decided by weight ratio of $MgCl_2$/PAN. The amount of hydrogen storage increased with increase of specific surface area and micropore volume of prepared electrospun carbon fibers.

  • The anatomy of Korean diffuse-porous woods, 36 families, 75 genera, 145 species, 215 specimens was described and analyzed. Sixteen wood anatomical characters, habit and phenology factors were determined by simple correlation and principal component analysis. Strong positive correlations were found between vessel element length and fiber length, ray width and ray height, simple pits of fiber wall and paratracheal parenchyma distribution. The results of principal component analysis (PCA) disclose the primitive characteristics and the direction of xylem evolution of Korean diffuse-porous woods. The xylem evolution scenario for Korean dicotyledonous woods is considered to be developed in the direction of decreasing trends of vessel frequency, vessel element length, and length/diameter(L/D) ratio of vessel element but increasing trends of vessel diameter, fiber length/vessel element length(F/V) ratio, libriform wood fibers, simple perforation, and homogeneous ray composition. Increase of vessel diameter and decrease of vessel frequency seem to be related to the improvement of conductive efficiency, and increase of the vessel element length and occurrence of scalariform perforation in vessel element may be related to enhanced of conductive safety. Also the libriform wood fibers and ray features appear to have relationship with mechanical support and nutrient metabolism, respectively.

  • The main purpose of this study lies on the improvement of micro dilution tunnel based on the typical porous tube type chamber. The characteristics of flow and temperature fields for steady state has been obtained by numerical analysis using FLUENT. Three different geometrical variations of the porous tube; a) increase of thickness at center, b) step increase of thickness at center and downstream, c) tapered increase of thickness, have been proposed. Accordingly results are obtained and compared in terms of penetration velocity and velocity ratio to therrmophoretic velocity for improvement against particulate deposition inside the tube. The penetration velocity and velocity ratio distributions in the upstream portion and portion of impinging of dilution air are apparently shown to be improved for the case of the step and tapered change of porous tube. The tapered change of tube thickness addition are shown to be the most effective among three geometrical changes. In addition, the considerable improvement against deposition are shown that its thickness should be at least 2mm.

  • We have studied the effects that inorganic zeolite powder have on structurally different copolymer [poly(propylene-co-ethylene)] and terpolymer [poly(propylene-co-ethylene-co-l-butene)] systems and the possibility of preparing suitable porous composite films. The impact strength and yield stress of the composites did not improve upon any further loading of zeolite, but the modulus increased gradually with respect to the filler loading. The experimental modulus of each of the two systems was compared with theoretical models. We performed a morphological study of the filler mixing efficiency and image analysis. The number-, weight-, and z-average air hole diameters were compared with respect to the draw ratio as well as the zeolite loading. The experimental results suggest that these two matrices can provide a new choice for preparing future multiphase polymeric porous films by stretching them unidirectionally. In particular, we suggest that a 40 wt% zeolite loading at a draw ratio of 4 is useful for porous film applications.

  • Porous silicon nitride ceramics were prepared by SHS (Self-Propagating High Temperature Synthesis) from silicon powder, silicon nitride powder and pore-forming precursor. The microstructure, porosity and the flexural strength of the porous silicon nitride ceramics were varied according to the Si/Si3N4 ratio, size and amount of the pore-forming precursors. Some sample exhibited as high flexural strength as $162{\pm}24\;MPa$. The high strength is considered to result from the fine pore size and the strong bonding amoung the silicon nitride particles.

  • In this paper, free vibration of Cooper-Naghdi micro sandwich cylindrical shell with saturated porous core and reinforced carbon nanotube (CNT) piezoelectric composite face sheets is investigated by using first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and modified couple stress theory (MCST). The sandwich shell is subjected to magneto-thermo-mechanical loadings with temperature dependent material properties. Energy method and Hamilton's principle are used for deriving of the motion equations. The equations are solved by Navier's method. The results are compared with the obtained results by the other literatures. The effects of various parameters such as saturated porous distribution, geometry parameters, volume fraction and temperature change on the natural frequency of the micro-sandwich cylindrical shell are addressed. The obtained results reveal that the natural frequency of the micro sandwich cylindrical shell increases with increasing of the radius to thickness ratio, Skempton coefficient, the porosity of the core, and decreasing of the length to radius ratio and temperature change.

  • The bending of a porous FG plate is discussed in this study using a novel higher quasi-3D hyperbolic shear deformation theory with four unknowns. The proposed theory takes into consideration the normal and transverse shear deformation effect and ensures the parabolic distribution of the transverse stresses through the thickness direction with zero-traction at the top and the bottom surfaces of the structure. Innovative porous functionally graded materials (FGM) have through-thickness porosity as a unique attribute that gradually varies with their qualities. An analytical solution of the static response of the perfect and imperfect FG plate was derived based on the virtual work principle and solved using Navier's procedure. The validity and the efficiency of the current model is confirmed by comparing the results with those obtained by others solutions. The comparisons showed that the present model is very efficient and simple in terms of computation time and exactness. The impact of the porosity parameter, aspect ratio, and thickness ratio on the bending of porous FG plate is shown through a discussion of several numerical results.

  • Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres have been a useful tool as a controlled drug delivery system for peptides and proteins. Recently, porous microspheres have gained great attention as inhalation drug delivery system due to their low aerodynamic densities. Here, we report highly porous PLGA microspheres, which were prepared by using a single o/w emulsification/solvent evaporation method. Two types of porogen, i.e., (i) extractable Pluronic F127 and (ii) gas foaming salt of ammonium bicarbonate, were used to induce pores on the surface of PLGA microspheres. The respective preparation conditions on dp/cp ratio and porogen concentration were determined by the previous preliminary experiments, and other preparation factors were further optimized on the basis of PLGA Mw and porogen type. The morphological features examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) show these porous microspheres have highly porous surface structure with a diameter range of 20${\sim}$30 ${\mu}$m. These highly porous PLGA microspheres, which have much lower density, would be a practical aerosol system for pulmonary drug delivery.
