This study aims to reduce the rancid odor generated during the fermentation process of kimchi by inserting zinc oxide (ZnO) into an inorganic porous material with a high surface area to decompose or adsorb the fermentation odor. ZnO activated by the presence of moisture exhibits decomposition of rancid odors. Mixed with Titanium dioxide (TiO2), a photocatalyst. To manufacture the packaging liner used in this study, NaOH, ZnCl2, and TiO2 powder were placed in a tank with diatomite and water. The sludge obtained via a hydrothermal ultrasonication synthesis was sintered in an oven. After being pin-milled and melt-blended, the powders were mixed with linear low-density polyethylene (L-LDPE) to make a masterbatch (M/B), which was further used to manufacture liners. A gas detector (GasTiger 2000) was used to investigate the total amount of sulfur compounds during fermentation and determine the reduction rate of the odor-causing compounds. The packaging liner cross-section and surface were investigated using a scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM-EDS) to observe the adsorption of sulfur compounds. A variety of sulfur compounds associated with the perceived unpleasant odor of kimchi were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). For the analyses, kimchi was homogenized at room temperature and divided into several sample dishes. The performance of the liner was evaluated by comparing the total area of the GC-MS signals of major off-flavor sulfur compounds during the five days of fermentation at 20℃. As a result, Nano-grade inorganic compound liners reduced the sulfur content by 67 % on average, compared to ordinary polyethylene (PE) foam liners. Afterwards SEM-EDS was used to analyze the sulfur content adsorbed by the liners. The findings of this study strongly suggest that decomposition and adsorption of the odor-generating compounds occur more effectively in the newly-developed inorganic nanocomposite liners.
A high-performance forward osmosis (FO) membrane was prepared using polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogel as a support layer. Through the UV-induced polymerization and subsequent phase separation of PEGDA, the crosslinked, hydrophilic, and porous PEGDA suppor layer was obtained. To achieve high FO flux and salt selectivity using the fabricated PEGDA support, a selective layer was synthesized via the toluene-assisted interfacial polymerization (TIP), in which toluene is used as an organic solvent. The prepared PEGDA-based FO membrane showed higher FO water flux and lower salt selectivity compared with commercial HTI membranes using 1.0 M NaCl draw solution and DI water feed solution. We propose the strategy to fabricate high-performance FO membranes utilizing supports formed with new hydrophilic materials and fabrication processes.
This paper presents the synthesis of ampholyte immobilized hollow-fiber membranes and adsorption characteristic of metallic ions. This is prepared by radiation induced grafting polymerization of an epoxy group containing Glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto an existing polyethylene porous hollow-fiber membrane. Ampholyte ion-exchanged alkalic group, $-NH_2$ (amine function) of Taurine (TAU) is reacted with glycidyl of GMA for the synthesis of stable membrane. However, Sodium sulfite (SS) membrane is also prepared by making chemical bonds with GMA of porous hollow-fiber membrane for the comparison of adsorption characteristic of metallic ions. These are called as TAU and SS membranes, respectively. It is shown that TAU membrane shows a steady flux, 0.9 m/h regardless of the density of TAU, while the flux of SS membrane decreases rapidly as the density of $SO_3H$ group increases. SS membrane showed a negligible flux. TAU membrane with the density 0.8 mmol/g shows the amount of metallic ions adsorbed in the following order, Cu > Cd > Mg > Sb > Pb. In general, TAU membrane with high density and reaction time showed the high amount of metallic ions adsorbed and flux.
This study was carried out in order to develop an economical and convenient way to improve storability of sweet persimmon 'Fuyu'. Natural porous materials (bamboo active carbon, chaff charcoal, and Ge-lite) pouching bags were enveloped in the conventional LDPE (low density polyethylene) package during room temperature and low temperature storage. The changes of soluble solids content, flesh firmness, flavor, decay, and softening of sweet persimmon were investigated in the 1- or 2-week intervals. The LDPE packaging with bamboo active carbon treatment was confirmed to maintain longer storability and higher quality than the LDPE packaging only. This method is expected to be applied to both of conventional and organic farming as an economical and convenient way to improve storability on long term storage and during distribution.
Sol-gel methods offer many advantages over conventional slip-casting, including the ability to produce ceramic membranes. They are purer, more homogeneous, more reactive and contain a wider variety of compositions. We produced ormosil sol using sol-gel process under various molecular weight of polymer species[polyethylene glycol(PEG)] in total system [Tetraethyl ortho silicate(TEOS)-polyethylene glycol(PEG)]. The properties of as-prepared ormosil sol such as viscosity and gelation time are characterized. Also, the ceramic membrane was prepared by dip-coating with synthetic sol and its microstructure was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The permeability and rejection efficiency of membrane for oil/water emulsion were evaluated as crossflow apparatus. The ormosil sol coated membrane was easily formed by steric effect of polymer and it improved flux efficiency because infiltration into porous support decreased. Its flux efficiency was elevated about $200\;l/m^2h$ compared with colloidal sol coated membrane at point of five minutes from starting test.

This study investigated the removal of recalcitrant organics in dyeing wastewater using a fluidized bed reactor(FBR) that contained cell-immobilized pellets. The pellets were manufactured and condensing the gel phase by mixing PEG-polymer and cells to form micro-porous PEG-polymer pellets whose size were ${\Phi}\;4mm{\times}H\;4mm$ on average. An industrial activated sludge without any pre-adaptation was used for the cell immobilization because it gave an equivalent removal efficiency to a pre-adapted sludges. The feed was obtained from an effluent of a biological treatment plant, which contained $SCOD_{Cr}$ of 330 mg/L and $SBOD_5$ of 20 mg/L. The $SCOD_{Cr}$ removal efficiency was over 45% and the effluent $COD_{Mn}$ concentration was less than 100 mg/L at HRTs from 6 to 24 hrs. The optimum HRT in the FBR was determined as 12 hrs considering the removal efficiency and cost. When a raw wastewater containing 768 mg/L of $COD_{Cr}$ was fed to the FBR, the effluent $COD_{Cr}$ concentration increased only slightly, giving a 70% of $COD_{Cr}$ removal or a 97% of $BCOD_5$ removal. This indicated that the FBR had an excellent capability of biodegradable organics removal also. In conclusion, the FBR could be applied to textile wastewater treatment in place of an activated sludge process.
Purpose: Superior orbital fissure syndrome is a rare neurological complex. Superior orbital fissure syndrome may result from a variety of inflammatory, infectious, neoplastic, iatrogenic, traumatic, vascular cause. The author report a patient who suffered from superior orbital fissure syndrome after inferior orbital wall reduction. Methods: A 26-year-old female suffered from inferior orbital wall fracture with inferior gaze limitation and orbital soft tissue herniation. On posttrauma 10 day, inferior orbital wall was reduced using endoscope and porous polyethylene ($Medpor^{(R)}$) was inserted. On immediate postoperation, she reported that extraocular movement was limited in almost any directions. She underwent exploration surgery to release the presence of extraocular muscle impingement. But, there was no observation of extraocular muscle impingement. On postoperative one day, high-dose steroid therapy was started to release superior orbital fissure syndrome which was defined in postoperative computed tomography. Results: After one month of high-dose steroid therapy, extraocular movement limitations improved progressively in all directions. In four months, extraocular movement recovered completely. Conclusion: Superior orbital fissure syndrome may occur after surgical procedure of orbital wall reduction. Prompt diagnosis and treatment with mega-dose corticosteroid is an effective option for avoiding disaster from compressive syndrome.
Objective : Medpor porous polyethylene was used to reconstruct small bone defects (gaps and burr holes) along a craniotomy bone flap. The feasibility and cosmetic results were evaluated. Methods : Medpor Craniotomy Gap Wedges, V and T, were designed. The V implant is a 10 cm-long wedge strip, the cross section of which is an isosceles triangle with a 4 mm-long base, making it suitable for gaps less than 4 mm after trimming. Meanwhile, the Medpor T wedge includes a 10 mm-wide thin plate on the top surface of the Medpor V Wedge, making it suitable for gaps wider than 4 mm and burr holes. Sixty-eight pterional craniotomies and 39 superciliary approaches were performed using the implants, and the operative results were evaluated with respect to the cosmetic results and pain or tenderness related to the cranial flap. Results : The small bone defects were eliminated with less than 10 minutes additional operative time. In a physical examination, there were no considerable cosmetic problems regarding to the cranial bone defects, such as a linear depression or dimple in the forehead, anterior temporal hollow, preauricular depression, and parietal burr hole defect. Plus, no patient suffered from any infectious complications. Conclusion : The Medpor Craniotomy Gap Wedge is technically easy to work with for reconstructing small bone defects, such as the bone gaps and burr holes created by a craniotomy, and produces excellent cosmetic results.

Retrobulbar hemorrhage is a disastrous condition that can lead to permanent blindness. As such, rapid diagnosis and treatment are critical. Here, we report a patient who presented with retrobulbar hemorrhage following an orbital floor fracture. Restoration of inferior orbital wall with porous polyethylene implant was underwent. Four days after the orbital floor reconstruction, the patient smoked a cigarette outdoors in -3℃ weather. Cold temperature and smoking caused an increase in his systemic blood pressure. The elevated blood pressure increased intraorbital pressure to the extent of causing central retinal artery occlusion and exacerbated oozing. During exploratory surgery, 3 mL of hematoma and diffuse oozing without arterial bleeding were observed. Prompt diagnosis and treatment prevented vision impairment. Few studies have reported on the risk factors for retrobulbar hemorrhage. This case showed that daily activities, such as exposure to cold weather or tobacco smoking, could be risk factors for retrobulbar hemorrhage.

This study reports the potential of using commercial copy papers as substrates for simple sensitive glucose detection. Typical paper-based devices use filter papers as porous substrates that can contain reagents; however, this is the first study to report the use of copy papers for the purpose of enhancing enzymatic colorimetric detection. Glucose detection using glucose oxidase, horseradish peroxidase and potassium iodide was performed on a copy paper, cellulose-based filter paper, and polyethylene film. The results indicated that the copy paper exhibited a stronger coloration than the other substrates. Reagents required for detection were dried on the copy paper, and a 3D-printed holder was designed to provide an environment for consistent imaging, making it a convenient cost-effective option for point-of-care testing using a mobile phone camera. The simple paper-based glucose sensor exhibited a linear range of 0.1-20 mM, limit of quantification of 0.477 mM, and limit of detection of 0.143 mM.
