  • We have observed the change in the film resistance of thin nickel film up to 13 nm, which is deposited on a porous anodic alumina substrate, prepared by two-step anodization technique under phosphoric acid. The resulting film grows as a porous film, following the pore structure on the surface of the alumina substrate, and the value of the resistance lies above $150k{\Omega}$ within the range of thickness studied here, decreasing very slowly with the film thickness. The observed resistance value is much higher than the reported value of a uniform film at the same thickness. Since the observed value of the surface coverage with the pores is smaller than the critical value, expected from the percolation theory, the pore structure limits the formation of conduction channel across the film. In addition, by comparing to the typical model of thickness-dependent resistivity, we expect that the scattering at the pore edge further increases the film resistance.

  • An analysis procedure for the MCFC channel flow has been developed to predict the fuel cell performance. The channel formed by the uniformly distributed trapezoidal supports is approximated by the porous medium that yields the equivalent pressure drop. The Wavier-Stokes, energy, and species equations are solved to obtain the velocity, temperature and concentration fields for a local current density which is computed from electrochemical correlations. The fuel cell characteristics, such as the temperature, pressure, mole concentration, voltage and current density distributions, are presented and discussed.

  • Porous media containing complex fluid passage have especially large surface area per unit volume. This study is aimed to identify the heat transfer characteristics of high-porosity metal foams in a horizontal channel. Experiment is performed under various heat flux, velocity and pore density. Nusselt number decreases with higher pore density. Metal foams shows higher heat transfer coefficients than pin-fin structure with the same porosity. This is due to the more complex flow passage and larger heat transfer area based on the structure of the metal foams. The analysis on the pin-fin structure may not be suitable to the metal foam structure but should be identified extensively through further study.

  • The configuration of the flow channel on a bipolar plate of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell(PEMFC) for efficient reactant supply has great influence on the performance of the fuel cell. Recent demand for higher energy density fuel cells requires an increase in current density at mid voltage range and a decrease in concentration overvoltage at high current density. Therefore, an interdigitated flow channel where mass transfer rate by convection through a gas diffusion layer is greater than the mass transfer by a diffusion mechanism through a gas diffusion layer was recently proposed. This study attempts to analyze the i-V performance, mass transfer and pressure drop in interdigitated flow channels by developing a fully three dimensional simulation model for PEMFC that can deal with anode and cathode flow together. The results indicate that the trade off between performance and pressure loss should be considered for efficient design of flow channels. Although the performance of the fuel cell with interdigitated flow is better than that with conventional flow channels due to a strong mass transfer rate by convection across a gas diffusion layer, there is also an increase in friction due to the strong convection through the porous diffusion layer accompanied by a larger pressure drop along the flow channel. It was evident that the proper selection of the ratio of channel and rib width under counter flow conditions in the fuel cell with interdigitated flow are necessary to optimize the interdigitated flow field design.

  • The high-speed bypass effect on the heat exchanger performance has been investigated numerically. The plate-fin type heat exchanger was modeled using two-dimensional porous approximation for the fin region. Governing equations of mass, momentum, and energy equations for compressible turbulent flow were solved using ideal-gas assumption for the air flow. Various bypass-channel height were considered for Mach numbers ranging 0.25-0.65. Due to the existence of the fin in the bypass channel, the main flow tends to turn into the core region of the channel, which results in the distorted velocity profile downstream of the fin region. The boundary layer thickness, displacement thickness, and the momentum thickness showed the variation of mass flow through the fin region. The mass flow variation along the fin region was also shown for various bypass heights and Mach numbers. The volumetric entropy generation was used to assess the loss mechanism inside the bypass duct and the fin region. Finally, the correlations of the friction factor and the Colburn j-factor are summarized.

  • A channel design which is closely related with the mass transport overpotential is one of the most important procedures to optimize the whole fuel cell performance. In this study, three dimensional results of a numerical study for gas distribution in channels of a molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) unit cell for a 1kW class stack was presented. The relationship between the fuel and air distribution in the anode and cathode channels of the unit cell and the electric performance was observed. A charge balance model in the electrodes and the electrolyte coupled with a heat transfer model and a fluid flow model in the porous electrodes and the channels was solved for the mass, momentum, energy, species and charge conservation. The electronic and ionic charge balance in the anode and cathode current feeders, the electrolyte and GDEs were solved for using Ohm's law, while Butler-Volmer charge transfer kinetics described the charge transfer current density. The material transport was described by the diffusion and convection equations and Navier-Stokes equations govern the flow in the open channel. It was assumed that heat is produced by the electrochemical reactions and joule heating due to the electrical currents.

  • A stream purification system was applied to the upper reaches of the Masan Reservoir to improve the water quality. This system consisted of two channels which were constructed on both sides of the stream, one side packed with crushed gravels and the other with plastic filter media. The system operated under low pollutant concentrations and high hydraulic loadings during a dry season to avoid clogging of the filter media. Removal rate and efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the channel packed with crushed gravel were $14.8g/m^3/d$ and 11.5%, and for the channel with plastic filter media, $50.1g/m^3/d$ and 13.5%, respectively. Removal efficiencies of total phosphorus (T-P) were 6.6% (gravel) and 10.0% (plastic media). These results indicated plastic filter media having relatively high specific surface areas were more efficient than crushed gravels in removing pollutants. However, due to low influent water quality during dry season, the removal efficiencies were low. The proportion of nitrate nitrogen to total nitrogen (T-N) of the inflow was high but, as the system operated under aerobic condition, nitrate nitrogen could not denitrified. Accordingly, total nitrogen was not attenuated with this system. To improve the reservoir water quality effectively, this system should be able to treat the storm runoff containing higher pollutant loadings. When the filter materials are clogged by the storm runoff instead of backwashing, it would be more efficient to replace them, Therefore, the use of natural materials which are light, easily obtaining and replaceable, and have high specific surface areas is recommended.

  • Since the heat generation in a chip increases as the components are miniaturized and the computing speed becomes faster, suitable heat dissipation has become one of the primary limiting factors to ensure the reliable operation of the electronic devices. A pin-fin array could be used as an alterative cooling system of the electronic equipment. In this study, convective heat transfer through the pin-fin array is analyzed experimentally based on porous medium approach. The influence of the structure of the pin-fin array including the pin-fin spacing, the pin diameter and plate length on heat transfer characteristics is investigated and compared with the previous analytical results and existing correlation equations. Nowadays, electronic and mechanical devices become smaller and smaller. In this sense, the main purpose of this study is to decide the optimum pin-fin arrangement to get similar heat transfer performance when the length of the existing cooling system is reduced as a half.

  • An experimental study was performed to evaluate the effects of surface coating and an enhanced insulation structure on the downward facing boiling process and the critical heat flux on the outer surface of a hemispherical vessel. Steady-state boiling tests were conducted in the Subscale Boundary Layer Boiling (SBLB) facility using an enhanced vessel/insulation design for the cases with and without vessel coatings. Based on the boiling data, CHF correlations were obtained for both plain and coated vessels. It was found that the nucleate boiling rates and the local CHF limits for the case with micro-porous layer coating were consistently higher than those values for a plain vessel at the same angular location. The enhancement in the local CHF limits and nucleate boiling rates was mainly due to the micro-porous layer coating that increased the local liquid supply rate toward the vaporization sites on the vessel surface. For the case with thermal insulation, the local CHF limit tended to increase from the bottom center at first, then decrease toward the minimum gap location, and finally increase toward the equator. This non-monotonic behavior, which differed significantly from the case without thermal insulation, was evidently due to the local variation of the two-phase motions in the annular channel between the test vessel and the insulation structure.

  • Revetment Mattress/Filter is the porous structure filled fillers in meshed structure so that it cail use the fillers of various sizes and form various pores. The porous structure of the Mattress/Filter increases drainage so that it decreases the energy and erosion of flow therefore the tractive force is decreased and the erosion of revetment is mitigated. The filler of Mattress/Filter uses gravels, waste concretes and slags so that the surface is rough and the roughness coefficient increases and the increase of the roughness coefficient decreases flow velocity and tractive force. On the other hand Mattress/Filter and vegetation are combined so that the increase of roughness coefficient and flow velocity still more progress therefore the effect of decrease of tractive force is increased after a few months have passed since the Mattress/Filter is constructed so that the vegetation is developed and be stabilized. The vegetation channel of Mattress/Filter is set tip and the inspection comes into operation by varing flowrate and vegetation spacing to examine these characters of the Mattress/Filter The coefficient of flow velocity U/U*' is decreased exponentially as vegetation esity aH' or $\lambda$ is increased and the coefficient of friction f is increased as vegetation desity aH' is increased but decreased as the coefficient of flow velocity U/U*' is increased. The effective tractive force $F_0$ is decreased exponentially as the vegetation desity aH' is increased. From the inspection the results are obtained that the porous and vegetation structure of the revetment Mattress/Filter system increases the coefficient of friction of revetment so that flow velocity and effective are decreased therefore greatly contributes the stability of the revetment.
