Formation of Anodic Films on Pure Mg and Mg alloys for Corrosion Protection

  • Mg and its alloys have been of great interest because of their low density of 1.7, 30% lighter than Al, but their wide applications have been limited because of their poor resistances against corrosion and/or abrasion. Corrosion resistance of Mg alloys can be improved by formation of anodic films using anodic oxidation method in aqueous electrolytes. Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is one of anodic oxidation methods by which hard anodic films can be formed as a result of micro-arc generation under high electric field. PEO method utilize not only substrate elements but also chemical components in electrolytes to form anodic films on Mg alloys. PEO films formed on AM50 magnesium alloy in an acidic fluozirconate electrolyte were observed to consist of mainly $ZrO_2$ and $MgF_2$. Liu et al reported that PEO coating on AM30 Mg alloy consists of $MgF_2$-rich outer porous layer and an MgO-rich dense inner layer. PEO films prepared on ACM522 Mg die-casting alloy in an aqueous phosphate solution were also reported to be composed of monoclinic $Mg_3(PO_4)_2$. $CeO_2$-incorporated PEO coatings were also reported to be formed on AZ31 Mg alloys in $CeO_2$ particle-containing $Na_2SiO_3$-based electrolytes. Magnesium tin hydroxide ($MgSn(OH)_6$) was also produced on AZ91D alloy by PEO process in stannate-containing electrolyte. Effects of $OH^-$, $F^-$, $PO{_4}^{3-}$ and $SiO{_3}^{2-}$ ions and alloying elements of Al and Sn on the formation of PEO films on pure Mg and Mg alloys and their protective properties against corrosion have been investigated in this work. $PO{_4}^{3-}$, $F^-$ and $SiO{_3}^{2-}$ ions were observed to contribute to the formation of PEO films but $OH^-$ ions were found to break down the surface films under high electric field. The effect of pulse current on the formation of PEO films will be also reported.

Preparation of Nanoporous Ceramic Membranes by Sol-gel Method and Characterization of Gas Permeation (졸-겔법에 의한 나노기공성 세라믹 막의 제조 및 기체투과 특성)

  • Nano-porous ceramic membranes was synthesized by the sol-gel method. Gas permeation of hydrogen and nitrogen was determined by single composition gas. Pore size $0.1{\mu}m$ and porosity 32% of flat type ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ substrate was manufactured. An intermediate ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ layer with pore size of 4 nm was formed by dip-coating. Polymeric silica sol was synthesized by acid catalyzed hydrolysis and condensation of tetra-ethyl-ortho-silicate. Supported membranes on alumina were prepared by dipping and calcining. He, $N_2$ permeation experiments with nanoporous sol-gel modified supported ceramic membranes were peformed to determine the gas transport characteristics. $He/N_2$ permselectivity around $100{\sim}160$ and helium permeation in the order of $10^{-7}mol/m^2{\cdot}s{\cdot}Pa$ were measured in the temperature range of $303{\sim}363K$.

Ceramic barrier coated Pd hydrogen membrane on a porous nickel support (수소 분리용 팔라듐계 분리막의 세라믹 코팅 영향)

  • A highly performed Pd-based hydrogen membrane has prepared successfully on a modified porous nickel support. The porous nickel support modified by impregnation method of $Al(NO_3)_3{\cdot}9H_2O$ (Aldrich Co.) over the nickel powder showed a strong resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and thermal stability. Plasma surface modification treatment was introduced as a pre-treatment process instead of conventional HCl wet activation. Ceramic barrier was coated on the external surface of the prepared nickel supports to prevent intermetallic diffusion and to enhance the affinity between the support and membrane. Palladium and copper were deposited at thicknesses of $4\mu}m$ and $0.5{\mu}m$, respectively, on a barrier-coated support by DC sputtering process. The permeation measurement was performed in pure hydrogen at $400^{\circ}C$. The single gas permeation of our membrane was two times higher than that of the previous membrane which do not have ceramic barrier.

Vapor Permeation Characteristics of TiO2 Composite Membranes Prepared on Porous Stainless Steel Support by Sol-Gel Method

  • Composite membranes with a titania layer were prepared by soaking-rolling method with the titania sol of nanoparticles formed in the sol-gel process and investigated regarding the vapor permeation of various organic mixtures. The support modification was conducted by pressing $SiO_2$ xerogel of 500 nm in particle size under 10 MPa on the surface of a porous stainless steel (SUS) substrate and designed the multi-layered structure by coating the intermediate layer of ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$. Microstructure of titania membrane was affected by heat-treatment and synthesis conditions of precursor sol, and titania formed at calcination temperature of 300$^{\circ}C$ with sol of [$H^+$]/[TIP]=0.3 possessed surface area of 210 $m^2$/g, average pore size of 1.25 nm. The titania composite membrane showed high $H_2/N_2$ selectivity and water/ethanol selectivity as 25-30 and 50-100, respectively. As a result of vapor permeation for water-alcohol and alcohol-alcohol mixture, titania composite membrane showed water-permselective and molecular-sieve permeation behavior. However, water/methanol selectivity of the membrane was very low because of chemical affinity of permeants for the membrane by similar physicochemical properties of water and methanol.

A Study of Properties and Coating Natural Mineral Pumice Powder of in Korea (한국산 천연 광물 부석 파우더 코팅 및 특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study is based on a coating method that provides utilization value as a micronised powder for cosmetic raw materials using natural minerals buried in Bonghwa, Gyeongsangbuk-do in Korea. The mineral powder name is called Buseok, and chemical name is pumice powder. The results of a study on the efficacy of cosmetics are reported by the development of particulate powder to assess the performance of this powder. First of all, in order to coat the surface of this powder with oil, aluminum hydroxide was coated on the particulate surface and then coated with alkylsilan. In addition, it was coated with vegetable oil to prevent condensation of the powder and increase the dispersion in the oil phase. First; the particle size of pumice powder was from 10 to 50mm having porous holes on the surface of the particles. Second; The components of this powder contained $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, $Fe_2O_3$, MgO, CaO, $K_2O_2$, $Na_2O$, $TiO_2$, $TiO_2$, MnO, $Cr_2O_3$, $V_2O_5$. Third: The particles of this powder have a planetary structure and are reddish-brown with porosity through SEM and TEM analysis. Fourth; the far-infrared radiation rate of this parabolic powder was $0.924{\mu}m$, and the radiative energy was $3.72{\times}102W/m^2$ and ${\mu}m$. In addition, the anion emission is 128 ION/cc, which shows that the coating remains unchanged. Based on these results, it is expected to be widely applied to basic cosmetics such as BB cream, cushion foundation, powderfect, and other color-coordinated cosmetics, sunblock cream, wash-off massage pack as an application of cosmetics. Pulverization and Densification Behavior of YAG Powder Synthesized by PVA Polymer Solution Method

  • YAG (Yttrium Aluminum Garnet, Y3Al5O12) has excellent plasma resistance and recently has been used as an alternative to Y2O3 as a chamber coating material in the semiconductor process. However, due to the presence of an impurity phase and difficulties in synthesis and densification, many studies on YAG are being conducted. In this study, YAG powder is synthesized by an organic-inorganic complex solution synthesis method using PVA polymer. The PVA solution is added to the sol in which the metal nitrate salts are dissolved, and the precursor is calcined into a porous and soft YAG powder. By controlling the molecular weight and the amount of PVA polymer, the effect on the particle size and particle shape of the synthesized YAG powder is evaluated. The sintering behavior of the YAG powder compact according to PVA type and grinding time is studied through an examination of its microstructure. Single phase YAG is synthesized at relatively low temperature of 1,000 ℃ and can be pulverized to sub-micron size by ball milling. In addition, sintered YAG with a relative density of about 98 % is obtained by sintering at 1,650 ℃.
