The flow characteristics of a circular cylinder surrounded by an outer permeable cylinder were experimentally investigated using Particle Image Velocimetry Technique in deep water flow. In order to consider the effects of diameter and porosity of the outer cylinder on flow structures of the inner cylinder, five different outer cylinder diameters (D=37.5, 52.5, 60, 75 and 90 mm) and eight different porosities (${\beta}$=0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.65, 0.7, 0.75, 0.8 and 0.85) were selected. During the experiments, the diameter of inner cylinder was kept constant as d=30 mm. The depth-averaged free-stream velocity was adjusted as U=0.156 m/s, which corresponds to the Reynolds number of Re=5000 based on the inner cylinder diameter. It has been concluded that both the outer permeable cylinder diameter and the porosity have important influences on the attenuation of vortex shedding in the wake region. The presence of outer permeable cylinder decreases the magnitude of Reynolds shear stress and turbulent kinetic energy compared to the bare cylinder case. Moreover, the spectral analysis of vortex shedding frequency has revealed that the dominant frequency of vortex shedding downstream of the cylinder arrangement also reduces substantially due to the weakened Karman shear layer instability.

This work addresses the free vibration analysis of Functionally Graded Porous (FGP) nanocomposite truncated conical shells with Graphene PLatelet (GPL) reinforcement. In this study, three different distributions for porosity and three different dispersions for graphene platelets have been considered in the direction of the shell thickness. The Halpin-Tsai equations are used to find the effective material properties of the graphene platelet reinforced materials. The equations of motion are derived based on the higher-order shear deformation theory and Sanders's theory. The Fourier Differential Quadrature (FDQ) technique is implemented to solve the governing equations of the problem and to obtain the natural frequencies of the truncated conical shell. The combination of FDQ with higher-order shear deformation theory allows a very accurate prediction of the natural frequencies. The precision and reliability of the proposed method are verified by the results of literature. Moreover, a wide parametric study concerning the effect of some influential parameters, such as the geometrical parameters, porosity distribution, circumferential wave numbers, GPLs dispersion as well as boundary restraint conditions on free vibration response of FGP-GPL truncated conical shell is also carried out and investigated in detail.
This research investigates the free vibration of porous advanced composite plates resting on Winkler/Pasternak/ Kerr foundations by using a new hyperbolic quasi three dimensional (quasi-3D) shear deformation theory. The present theory, which does not require shear correction factor, accounts for shear deformation and thickness stretching effects by parabolic variation of all displacements across the thickness, and satisfies the stress-free boundary conditions on the upper and lower surfaces of the plate. In this work, we consider imperfect FG plates with porosities embedded within elastic Winkler, Pasternak or Kerr foundations. Implementing an analytical approach, the obtained governing equations from Hamilton's principle according to FG plates are derived. The closed form solutions are obtained by using Navier technique, and natural frequencies of FG plates are found, for simply supported plates, by solving the results of eigenvalue problems. A comprehensive parametric study is presented to evaluate effects of the geometry of material, mode numbers, porosity volume fraction, Power-law index and stiffness of foundations parameters on free vibration characteristics of FG plates.
Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) flat sheet hydrophobic membranes were prepared using 16 wt% PVDF in Dimethyl acetamide (DMAc) by phase inversion technique for desalination application using Membrane Distillation (MD). In this work, the effect of coagulation mediums such as ethanol and water as well their synergistic behavior on the fabricated PVDF membrane morphology was studied using SEM. Moreover, other characteristics required for the membrane distillation applications namely porosity, hydrophobicity and tensile strength were measured using the gravimetric method, sessile drop method and universal testing machine respectively. It was observed that the membrane morphology paradigm shifted from the finger-like structure to the sponge-like structure on increasing the ethanol concentration in coagulant. The porosity of the fabricated membrane was under the required MD range and found to be 57.3% at 16 weight % of PVDF in DMAc solvent under a pure ethanol coagulant bath. Moreover, the top surface contact angle ranges from 85° to 115° on increasing the bath concentration from CBC 0 to CBC 100 at 16 weight % of PVDF in DMAc solvent.

This paper studies the effects of porosity distributions on buckling and post-buckling behaviors of a functionally graded saturated porous (FGSP) circular plate. The plate is under the uniformly distributed radial loading and simply supported and clamped boundary conditions. Pores are saturated with compressible fluid (e.g., gases) that cannot escape from the porous solid. Elastic modulus is assumed to vary continuously through the thickness according to three different functions corresponding to three different cases of porosity distributions, including monotonous, symmetric, and asymmetric cases. Governing equations are derived utilizing the classical plate theory and Sanders nonlinear strain-displacement relations, and they are solved numerically via shooting method. Results are verified with the known results in the literature. The obtained results for the monotonous and symmetric cases with the asymmetric case presented in the literature are shown in comparative figures. Effects of the poroelastic material parameters, boundary conditions, and thickness change on the post-buckling behavior of the plate are discussed in details. The results reveal that buckling and post-buckling behaviors of the plate in the monotonous and symmetric cases differ from the asymmetric case, especially in small deflections, that asymmetric distribution of elastic moduli can be the cause.

The soda lime waste glass powder was dissolved in NaOH-4M solution to synthesize an alkaline activator, which was used to activate Class-C fly ash (FA). Compressive and flexural strength tests were conducted to determine the mechanical properties. Archimedes' principle was applied to measure the porosity of samples, (SEM-EDX) and XRD was used to study the microstructure and phase changes of samples. Through Inductive Coupled Plazma technique, the solution was found to increase the concentration of Si as the amount of dissolved glass powder was increased. Owing to the increased concentration of Si in an alkaline solution, the reactivity of FA was accelerated resulting in an increased strength and reduced porosity. Additionally, the dissolution of FA was improved as well as the formation of amorphous phases in the matrix was also enhances with the concentration of increased Si in an alkaline solution.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the free vibration behavior of the micro sandwich beam composing of five layers such as functionally graded (FG) porous core, nanocomposite reinforced by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and piezomagnetic/piezoelectric layers subjected to magneto electrical potential resting on silica aerogel foundation. The effect of foundation has been taken into account using Vlasov model in addition to rigid base assumption. For this purpose, an iterative technique is applied. The material properties of the FG porous core and FG nanocomposite layers are considered to vary throughout the thickness direction of the beams. Based on the Timoshenko beam theory and Hamilton's principle, the governing equations of motion for the micro sandwich beam are obtained. The Navier's type solution is utilized to obtain analytical solutions to simply supported micro sandwich beam. Results are verified with corresponding literatures. In the following, a study is carried out to find the effects of the porosity coefficient, porous distribution, volume fraction of CNT, the thickness of silica aerogel foundation, temperature and moisture, geometric parameters, electric and magnetic potentials on the vibration of the micro sandwich beam. The results are helpful for the design and applications of micro magneto electro mechanical systems.

In this study, we fabricated tubular ceramic support for segmented-in-series solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) by using CSZ(CaO-stabilized $ZrO_2$) as main material and activated carbon as pore former. Thermal expansion properties of ceramic support with different amounts of activated carbon were analyzed by using dilatometer to decide a suitable sintering temperature. The tubular ceramic supports with different amounts of activated carbon (5, 10, 15wt.%) were fabricated by the extrusion technique. After sintering at $1100^{\circ}C$ and $1400^{\circ}C$ for 5h., cross section and surface morphology of tubular ceramic support were analyzed by using SEM image. Also, the porosity, mechanical property, gas permeability of tubular ceramic supports was measured. Based on these results, we established the suitable fabrication technique of tubular ceramic support for segmented-in-series SOFC.

Thermal characterization of geomaterials has significant implication on the geothermal energy, disposal of nuclear wastes, geological sequestration of carbon dioxides and recovery of hydrocarbon resources. Heat transfer in multiphase materials is dominated by the thermal conductivity of consisting components, porosity, degree of saturation and overburden pressure, which have been investigated by the empirical correlation at macro-scale. The thermal measurement by Transient Plane Source (TPS) and associated algorithm for interpretation of thermal behavior in geomaterials corroborate the robustness of sensing techniques. The method simultaneously provides thermal conductivity, diffusivity and volumetric heat capacity. The newly introduced thermal network model enables estimating thermal conductivity of geomaterials subjected to the effective stress, which has not been evaluated using previous thermal models. The proposed methods shows the applicability of reliability of TPS technique and thermal network model.

The study of mechanical properties and fracture behaviour of carbon/carbon composites is significant to its application and development. These are dependent on microstructure and properties of reinforcing fibers and matrix, fiber/matrix interface and porosity/cracks present in the composites. In the present studies high-density carbon/carbon composites have been prepared using PAN and various pitch based carbon fibers as reinforcements and pitch as matrix with repeated densification cycles using high-pressure impregnation and carbonization technique. Scanning electron microscopy has been used to study the fracture behaviour of the highly dense composites and correlated with structure of the composites. The geometry of reinforcement and presence of unfilled voids/cracks was found to influence the path of crack propagation and thereby the strength of composites. The type of stresses (tensile or compressive) accumulated also plays an important role in fracture of composites.
