The Weldability of $6mm^t$ Primer-coated Steel for Shipbuilding Using $CO_2$ Laser (II) - Dynamic Behavior of Laser Welding Phenomenon and Composition of Porosity and Vaporized-particle - ($6mm^t$조선용 프라이머 코팅강판의 $CO_2$레이저 용접성 (II) - 레이저 용접현상의 동적거동과 기공 및 증발입자의 조성 -)

  • It has been reported that good quality weld beads are not easily obtained during the $CO_2$ CW laser welding of primer coated plate. However, by introducing a small gap clearance in the lap position, the zinc vapor can escape through it and sound weld beads can be acquired. Therefore, this study examines for keyhole behavior by observing the laser-induced plasma and investigates the relation between keyhole behavior and formation of weld defect. Laser-induced plasma has accompanied with the vaporizing pressure of zinc ejecting from keyhole to surface of primer coated plate. This dynamic behavior of plasma was very unstable and this instability was closely related to the unstable motion of keyhole during laser welding. As a result of observing the composition of porosity, much of Zn element was found from inner surface of porosity. But Zn was not found from the dimple structure fractured at the weld metal. By analyzing of vaporizing element in laser welding, a component ratio of Zn was decreased by introducing a small gap clearance. Therefore we can prove that the major cause of porosity is the vaporization of primer in lap position. Mechanism of porosity-formation is that the primer vaporized from the lap position accelerates dynamic behavior of the key hole and the bubble separated from the key hole is trapped in the solidification boundary and romaines as porosity.

  • H-NCM(Hong-Nanocast Method)has several benefits such as a lower porosity defect and high quality casting comparing to conventional die casting. Influence of casting parameters of hybrid-lower arm in rheocasting process on the slurry flow and the amount of porosity defect was investigated using experimental and simulation methods. In the present study, the Carreau model was adopted to simulate the pattern of rheological flow. Optimal casting paremeters such as injection speed and stroke variations were established. Sound products with integral microstructure and sound shape of joinning different materials of Al and steel pipe without deforming the steel pipe were obtained by the H-NCM slurry and X-ray analysis also showed integral condition throughout the entire parts.

Ultrasonic Pattern Recognition of Welding Defects Using the Chaotic Feature Extraction (카오스 특징 추출에 의한 용접 결함의 초음파 형상 인식)

  • The ultrasonic test is recognized for its significance as a non-destructive testing method to detect volume defects such as porosity and incomplete penetration which reduce strength in the weld zone. This paper illustrates the defect detection in the weld zone of ferritic carbon steel using ultrasonic wave and the evaluation of pattern recognition by chaotic feature extraction using time series signal of detected defects as data. Shown in the time series data were that the time delay was 4 and the embedding dimension was 6 which indicate the geometric dimension of the subject system and the extent of information correlation. Based on fractal dimension and lyapunov exponent in quantitative chaotic feature extraction, feature value of 2.15, 0.47 is presented for porosity and 2.24, 0.51 for incomplete penetration The precision rate of the pattern recognition is enhanced with these values on the total waveform of defect signal in the weld zone. Therefore, we think that the ultrasonic pattern recognition method of weld zone defects of ferritic carbon steel by ultrasonic-chaotic feature extraction proposed in this paper can boost precision rate further than the existing method applying only partial waveform.

  • Recently, there were some successful examples that the laser welding was introduced into production line. However, the spread of laser welding is not sufficient in many industries. There are several reasons why it is difficult to penetrate the laser welding into production lines. Because it is different from reflection, absorption and permeation of laser beam according to material and surface condition. Moreover, there are significant problems in processing such as absorption and scattering of beam by the induced plasma or plume. Therefore, understanding of mechanism on formation of weld defect in laser welding of the laminated core for motor is very important. In this paper, it was analyzed in terms of materials which was source of defect in laser welding and conventional arc welding. As a results of analysis, insulation coating film of the laminated core was judged to main factor of weld defect. it could be well aware as tracing carbon volume, and it was deduced that weld defect by insulation coating film was caused by difference of mechanism between the two heat sources.

  • Most structure engineers give the casting components over-estimated factor of safety without any reasonable foundation due to the worries about the unavoidable defects such as shrinkages and porosity in castings; the engineers have little knowledge on the relation between the defect and structural behavior. And the workers in casting field also do not know how to control the defects by manufacturing; they do not know to where the defects move or until how size they reduce the defects. In this study, shrinkage defect was scanned by industrial computerized tomography instrument (CT), and subsequently was modeled to a spheroid primitive for structural analysis. Using these simplified models of shrinkage, we observed the effects of the defect on the results of the structural analysis. A commercial structural analysis code was used to do the analysis works. Structures and Defects in Welds of High Strengths Al Alloys by Using GTAW (GTAW에 의한 Al 합금 용접부의 조직 및 결합에 대한 연구)

  • Recently Al alloys are being used gradually for structural materials of transports. In welding of Al alloys used for transports, good weldabilities as well as adequate mechanical properties of the welds should be ensured as structural materials. In this study, the welds formation, macro and microstructural characteristics, generation of defects and hardness distribution in welds of Al alloys of 5083, 6N01 and 7N01 by DCSP- and AC-GTA welding process, were investigated. The deeper penetration was obtained in all welds of the alloys by DCSP-GTAW with He gas, compared with those by using AC-GTAW. The 6N01 alloy showed high susceptibilities to solidification cracking in weld metal and liquation cracking in HAZ of the welding beads of both DCSP- and AC-GTAW process. The cracking ratio of 6N01 alloy was increased with increasing of welding current. The porosity ratios in weld metal of all alloys used were extremely low including all welding conditions of DCSP-GTAW. However, in AC-GTAW process, the porosity ratios of the welds using Ar gas showed much higher values than those using He gas.

A Study on the Feature Extraction of Pattern Recognition for Weld Defects Evaluation of Titanium Weld Zone (티타늄 용접부의 용접결함평가를 위한 형상인식 특징추출에 관한 연구)

  • This study proposes feature extraction method of pattern recognition by evaluation of weld defects in weld zone of titanium. For this purpose, analysis objectives in this study are features of attractor quadrant and fractal dimension. Trajectory changes in the attractor indicated a substantial difference in fractal characteristics resulting from distance shifts such as porosity of weld zone. These differences in characteristics of weld defects enables the evaluation of unique characteristics of defects in the weld zone. In quantitative fractal feature extraction, feature values of 0.87 and 1.00 in the case of part of 0.5 skip distance and 0.72 and 0.93 in the case of part of 1.0 skip distance were proposed on the basis of fractal dimensions. Attractor quadrant point, feature values of 1.322 and 1.172 in the case of ${\phi}1{\times}3mm$ porosity and 2.264 and 307 in the case of ${\phi}3{\times}3mm$ porosity were proposed on the basis of distribution value. The Proposed feature extraction of pattern recognition in this study can be used for safety evaluation of weld zone in titanium.

The Study of Laser Weldability of two different Metal, Carbon Steel and Sintered Materials, Depends on the Sintered Density (소결밀도에 따른 분말 소결금속과 탄소강의 이종금속 레이저 용접성 고찰)

  • Sintered specimen which used for a blade of diamond tool was manufactured in order to verify $CO_2$ laser weldability depend on sintered temperature. Five kind of specimen were prepared and the range of temperature is from $600^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$ at intervals of $100^{\circ}C$. As a result of the sintered density test, the porosity rate appeared in the range of $2.1%{\sim}21.4%$. After welding, the most segments had exceeds the minimum fracture stress (600MPa, The Standard Safety of Europe) at the welding strength test except on the sintered at $600^{\circ}C$. In case of the sintered at $700^{\circ}C$, even satisfied the safety allowable stress but cannot get the good quality for bead appearance because of humping defect. In the conclusion, we could know that it showed not only relatively soundness bead but also enough welding strength when the sintered blade of diamond tool is included less than 4% of porosity rate.

A Study on the Ultrnsonic Distance Amplitude Characteristics Curve for Weld Defects Evaluation of Titanium Weld Zone (티타늄 용접부의 용접결함평가를 위한 초음파거리진폭특성곡선에 관한 연구)

  • This study proposes integrity evaluation method of weld zone in titanium using titanium distance amplitude characteristics curve(TDACC) and ultrasonic signals. For these purposes, the ultrasonic signals for porosity defects of weld zone in titanium are acquired in the type of time series data and echo strength. 4 lines in the DACC indicated damage evaluation standard of weld zone in titanium. The acquired ultrasonic signals agree fairly well with the measured results of reference block and sensitivity block(defect location, bean1 propagation distance, echo strength, etc). The proposed TDACC in this study agree fairy well with the measured results of weld zone in titanium(weld defects as porosity). The proposed TDACC in this study can be used for integrity evaluation of weld zone in titanium.

Comparative Reliability of Nondestructive Testing for Weld: Water Wall Tube in Thermal Power Plant Boiler Case Study (용접부 비파괴 검사의 신뢰성 비교: 화력 발전소의 보일러 수냉벽 배관 사례연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this research is to find which technique, between the PAUT (Phased array ultrasonic test) that has been used widely in practice and RT (Radiographic test) that was used widely in the past, has the higher reliability as a non-destructive testing of welding points in water wall tubes. Methods: To evaluated the reliability of non-destructive testing, eleven test pieces that were fabricated intentionally, which have the most frequently occurred defect types in water wall tubes and then both the PAUT and RT were performed on those eleven test pieces to compare their reliability. Results: The differences of type of defect, length are occurred due to the characteristics of nondestructive testing. The RT could not detect the lack of fusion defect type in specimen #4 and #8 while PAUT could not detect the lateral crack and 1 mm size small porosity in specimen #11. Conclusion: It is concluded that applying both the RT and PAUT result the best reliability rather than applying only one test method, if it is possible, in nondestructive testing of weld water wall tube in thermal power plant boiler case.
