  • Statement of problem: The high melting temperature and chemical reactivity of titanium necessitates casting machines different from those used in conventional casting. Despite the new developments in Ti casting systems , inadequate mold filling and internal porosity are frequently observed casting defects. Therefore, the study on the fabrication technique including sprue design to solve these casting defects is still necessary. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of sprue design and cross sectional area of sprue on the internal porosity. Materials and methods: 30 simulated cast three units titanium crowns were prepared. 5 cast crowns for each with different sprue design(sinlge sprue, double sprue and plate sprue) of two cross sectional areas (small and large cross sectional areas) were fabricated. The sections of titanium castings were photographed in a microscope at ${\times}100$ magnification to record internal porosities. Results and Conclusion: Within the limits of this study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. There was a significantly lower in internal porosity of titanium castings for large cross sectional area of sprue group than the small group (P<.05) 2. There was no significant difference in internal porosity among sprue designs in similar cross sectional area of sprue (P>.05).

  • Using the mathematical model suggested by Bennet et al.(1992), the reflection and transmission coefficients by a circular pile breakwater has been investigated in the framework of potential theory. Flow separation due to sudden contraction and expansion is generated and is the main cause of significant energy loss. Therefore, evaluation of exact energy loss coefficient is critical to enhance the reliability of mathematical model. To obtain the energy loss coefficient, 2-dimensional turbulent flow is analyzed using the FLUENT commercial code. The energy loss coefficient can be obtained from the pressure difference between upstream and downstream. Energy loss coefficient is the function of porosity and the relation equation between them is suggested throughout the curve fitting processing. To validated the suggested relation, comparison between the analytical results and the experimental results is made for four different porosities with good agreement.

  • In solid oxide fuel cell system, yttria-stabilized zirconia is generally adopted as the electrolyte, which has high strength and superior oxygen ion conductivity, and the air electrode and the fuel electrode are attached to this. Recently, new structure of 'layered planar SOFC module' was suggested to solve the reliability problem due to the high temperature stability of a sealing agent and a binding material. In this study to materialize the air electrode in a layered planar SOFC module, the LSM ink was coated to form homogeneous electrode in the channel after the ink preparation. As the porosity control agent, PMMA or active carbon powder was adopted with use of a commercial dispersant in ethanol. The optimal amounts of both the porosity control agents and the dispersant were determined. Four (4) vol% of the dispersant for the LSM-PMMA case and 15 vol% for LSM-carbon powder showed the lowest viscosities respectively to indicate the best dispersed states of the slurries. With PMMA and carbon powder, sintered LSM ink shows the relatively homogeneous distributions of pores and with increases of the agents, the porosities increased in both cases. From this, it can be thought that the amount of the PMMA or carbon powder could be used to control the porosity of the LSM ink.

  • In geological storage of $CO_2$, the behavior of $CO_2$ is influenced by pore network of rock. In this study, the drilling cores from Pohang Basin were analyzed quantitatively using three-dimensional images acquired by X-ray micro computed tomography. The porosities of sandstone specimens around 740 m-depth (T1), 780 m-depth (T2) and 810 m-depth (T3) which were target strata were 25.22%, 23.97%, 6.28%, respectively. Equivalent diameter, volume, area, local thickness of pores inside the sandstone specimens were analyzed. As a result, the microstructural properties of T1 and T2 specimens were more suitable for geological storage of $CO_2$ than those of T3 specimens. The result of the study can be used as input data of the site for decision of injection condition, flow simulation and so on.

  • Abstract In this work. gasification of graphite cores from nickel-coated graphite composite powders was carried out to munufacture the hollow nickel metal powders which can be used as a raw materials for porous nickel metal strips. Graphite cores were gasified by $H_2O-H_2$ mixture gases at the temperature between $800^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$ and nearly all removed from the composite powders within 1 hour. The hollow nickel metal powders prepared from 82.2wt. % Ni-17.8wt. % C composite powders which have the graphite cores of 21${\mu}$m average size were pressed and sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in vacuum furnace. The porosities of green and sintered compacts were 45% and 30%. respectively, and pores were distributed very homogeneously in the sintered compact. It was confirmed that pore distribution and porosity in porous materials can be easily controlled by using hollow powders as a raw materials.

  • By the mechanical alloying method. Ni-WC composite materials were prepared to improve the deformation-resistance for creep and sintering of Ni-anode at the operating temperature of $650^{\circ}C$. Mechanically alloyed powder w was initially fabricated by ball milling for 80hr, and then amorphization was occurred by the destruction of ordered crystals based on XRD analysis. In order to investigate the electrochemical performance and sheet characteristics of Ni-WC anode, tape casting process was adopted. Finally, the obtained sheet thickness of Ni- we after sintering at $1180^{\circ}C$ for 60 minutes in $H_2$ atmosphere was O.9mm and the average pore size was $3~5{\mu\textrm{m}}$ with porosities of 55%. The second phase was not observed in Ni- W matrix while W particles were finely and uniformly distributed in Ni matrix. This fine and uniform distributed W particles in Ni matrix are expected to enhance the mechanical properties of Ni anode through the dispersion and solid solution hardening mechanisms.

  • For a development purpose of thick metal / metal Graded-Boundary Materials(GBM), a basic research on the fabrication of Ni-Cr/steel GBM was carried out by a laser beam and its mechanical properties and thermal characteristics were investigated. In order to produce a compositionally graded boundary region between substrate steel and added Ni-Cr alloy, a series of surface alloying treatments was performed with a high power CO$_2$ laser beam. Ni-Cr sheet was placed on a low carbon steel plate(0.18%C), and then a CO$_2$ laser beam was irradiated on the surface to produce a homogeneous alloyed layer. On this first surface-alloyed layer, another Ni-Cr sheet was placed and then the CO$_2$ laser beam was irradiated again to produce second surface-alloyed layer. Sequential repetitions of laser surface alloying treatment 4 times resulted in a graded-boundary region with the thickness of about 1.4mm. Simultaneous concentration profiles of different kinds of alloying elements(Ni and Cr) showed from 42%Ni, 45%Cr and 13%Fe on surface region to 0%Ni, 0%Cr and 99%Fe in substrate region. Also a thermal conductivity gradient resulted in graded-region and its value changed from 0.03㎈/cm s$\^{C}$ in surface region to 0.1㎈/cm s$\^{C}$ in substrate region. Microstructural observation showed that any visible root porosities and solidification shrinkage cracks were not formed in graded region between alloyed layer and substrate region during rapid cooling.

  • An analytical formulation and solution process for the buckling analysis of porous magneto-electro-elastic functionally graded (MEE-FG) beam via different thermal loadings and various boundary conditions is suggested in this paper. Magneto electro mechanical coupling properties of FGM beam are taken to vary via the thickness direction of beam. The rule of power-law is changed to consider inclusion of porosity according to even and uneven distribution. Pores possibly occur inside FGMs due the result of technical problems that lead to creation of micro-voids in these materials. Change in pores along the thickness direction stimulates the mechanical and physical properties. Four-variable tangential-exponential refined theory is employed to derive the governing equations and boundary conditions of porous FGM beam under magneto-electrical field via Hamilton's principle. An analytical model procedure is adopted to achieve the non-dimensional buckling load of porous FG beam exposed to magneto-electrical field with various boundary conditions. In order to evaluate the influence of thermal loadings, material graduation exponent, coefficient of porosity, porosity distribution, magnetic potential, electric voltage and boundary conditions on the critical buckling temperature of the beam made of magneto electro elastic FG materials with porosities a parametric study is presented. It is concluded that these parameters play remarkable roles on the buckling behavior of porous MEE-FG beam. The results for simpler states are proved for exactness with known data in the literature. The proposed numerical results can serve as benchmarks for future analyses of MEE-FG beam with porosity phases.

  • A four-variable shear deformation refined plate theory has been proposed for dynamic characteristics of smart plates made of porous magneto-electro-elastic functionally graded (MEE-FG) materials with various boundary conditions by using an analytical method. Magneto-electro-elastic properties of FGM plate are supposed to vary through the thickness direction and are estimated through the modified power-law rule in which the porosities with even and uneven type are approximated. Pores possibly occur inside functionally graded materials (FGMs) due the result of technical problems that lead to creation of micro-voids in these materials. The variation of pores along the thickness direction influences the mechanical properties. The governing differential equations and boundary conditions of embedded porous FGM plate under magneto-electrical field are derived through Hamilton's principle based on a four-variable tangential-exponential refined theory which avoids the use of shear correction factors. An analytical solution procedure is used to achieve the natural frequencies of embedded porous FG plate supposed to magneto-electrical field with various boundary condition. A parametric study is led to carry out the effects of material graduation exponent, coefficient of porosity, magnetic potential, electric voltage, elastic foundation parameters, various boundary conditions and plate side-to-thickness ratio on natural frequencies of the porous MEE-FG plate. It is concluded that these parameters play significant roles on the dynamic behavior of porous MEE-FG plates. Presented numerical results can serve as benchmarks for future analyses of MEE-FG plates with porosity phases.

  • In this study, the formation, microstructure, and wear properties of Colmonoy 88 (Ni-17W-15Cr-3B-4Si wt.%) + Stellite 1 (Co-32Cr-17W wt.%) coating layers fabricated by high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) spraying are investigated. Colmonoy 88 and Stellite 1 powders were mixed at a ratio of 1:0 and 5:5 vol.%. HVOF sprayed self-fluxing composite coating layers were fabricated using the mixed powder feedstocks. The microstructures and wear properties of the composite coating layers are controlled via a high-frequency heat treatment. The two coating layers are composed of ${\gamma}-Ni$, $Ni_3B$, $W_2B$, and $Cr_{23}C_6$ phases. Co peaks are detected after the addition of Stellite 1 powder. Moreover, the WCrB2 hard phase is detected in all coating layers after the high-frequency heat treatment. Porosities were changed from 0.44% (Colmonoy 88) to 3.89% (Colmonoy 88 + ST#1) as the content of Stellite 1 powder increased. And porosity is denoted as 0.3% or less by inducing high-frequency heat treatment. The wear results confirm that the wear property significantly improves after the high-frequency heat treatment, because of the presence of well-controlled defects in the coating layers. The wear surfaces of the coated layers are observed and a wear mechanism for the Ni-based self-fluxing composite coating layers is proposed.
