This investigation presents a topology formulation to design optimal poroelastic acoustic foams to maximize absorbing ability. For successful formulation, a single set of equations based on Biot's theory is adopted and an appropriate material interpolation strategy is newly developed. Because there was no earlier attempt to solve poroelastic acoustic foam design problems in topology optimization setting, many challenging issues including modeling and interpolation must be addressed. First, the simulation accuracy by a proposed unified model encompassing acoustic air and poroelastic material was checked against analytical and numerical results. Then a material interpolation scheme yielding a distinct acoustic air-poroelastic material distribution was developed. Using the proposed model and interpolation scheme, the topology optimization of a two-dimensional poroelastic acoustic foam for maximizing its absorption coefficient was carried out. Numerical results show that the absorption capacity of an optimized foam layout considerably increases in comparison with a nominal foam layout.
In this paper, the wave propagation in an infinite poroelastic cylindrical bone with cavity is studied. An exact closed form solution is presented by employing an analytical procedure. The frequency equation for poroelastic bone is obtained when the boundaries are stress free and is examined numerically. The magnitude of the frequency equation, wave velocity and attenuation coefficient are calculated for poroelastic bone for different values of magnetic field, density and frequency. In wet bone little frequency dispersion was observed, in contrast to the results of earlier studies. Such a model would in particular be useful in large-scale parametric studies of bone mechanical response. Comparison was made with the results obtained in the presence and absence of magnetic field. The results indicate that the effect of magnetic field, density and frequency on wave propagation in poroelastic bone are very pronounced.
Sound absorbing characteristics of poroelastic materials is known to be greatly affected by high intensity acoustic waves. However, this effect has not been considered yet. In this study, the extended semilinear model based on Biot's theory for the porous materials and the characteristics of nonlinear waves in poroelastic sound absorbing materials were introduced. The expressions for the finite-amplitude acoustic plane waves were presented. By combining each nonlinear wave with appropriate matching conditions, we could investigate the effects of finite-amplitude acoustic waves on absorption characteristics of poroelastic materials. In the most ideal case considered in this paper, the absorption coefficient was found to become larger than that of linear incident waves. It was shown that the absorption coefficient became greater especially as frequency goes higher and as distance from the source goes larger. These phenomena may be inferred to result from 'dissipation effects due to nonlinearity'. This finding may have important implications for high intensity noise control.
In this paper, the extended Biot's semilinear model was developed. Combining the extended Biot model with the dynamic equation yields the nonlinear wave equation in poproelastic sound absorbing materials. Both perturbation and matching techniques are used to find solutions for nonlinear wave equations. By comparing results between linear and nonlinear wave solutions, characteristics of nonlinear waves in poroelastic sound abosrbing materials have been studied. Nonlinear waves were found to be attenuated faster than the linear ones. A maximum amplitude of the nonlinear wave occurred near its surface boundaries and decay quickly with distance from the surface. It has also been found that, if the amplitudes of linear waves are known at the surface boundaries, those of nonlinear ones can be determined. This will be the basis of finding effects of nonlinearity on the absorption coefficient and the transmission loss.

In this study, a numerical approach based on mid-point integrated finite elements and a viscous boundary is proposed for time-domain wave-propagation analyses in infinite poroelastic media. The proposed approach is accurate, efficient, and easy to implement in time-domain analyses. In the approach, an infinite domain is truncated at some distance. The truncated domain is represented by mid-point integrated finite elements with real element-lengths and a viscous boundary is attached to the end of the domain. Given that the dynamic behaviors of the proposed model can be expressed in terms of mass, damping, and stiffness matrices only, it can be implemented easily in the displacement-based finite-element formulation. No convolutional operations are required for time-domain calculations because the coefficient matrices are constant. The proposed numerical approach is applied to typical wave-propagation and soil-structure interaction problems. The model is verified to produce accurate and stable results. It is demonstrated that the numerical approach can be applied successfully to nonlinear soil-structure interaction problems.

The thermoelastic behavior of the porous carbon/phenolic composites is studied using the thermomechanical response model of chemically decomposing composites. The model includes thermal dependence of the porous composites, porosity in the pyrolysis process, pore pressure due to decomposing gases, and shrinkage. The poroelastic coefficients are calculated based on representative volume element model and finite element analysis. The internal stress distribution caused by pores and pore pressure, and the overall deformation are verified. The effects of the poroelastic coefficients on the thermoelastic behavior are examined through numerical experiments.

It has been noted that the low frequency absorption coefficient of a porous sample placed in a standing wave tube is affected by the nature of the sample's edge constraint. The edge constraint has the effect of stiffening the solid phase of the sample, which itself can be strongly coupled to the material's fluid phase, and hence the incident sound field, by viscous means at low frequencies. In recent work it has also been shown that such a circumferential constraint causes the low frequency transmission loss of a layer of fibrous material to approach a finite low frequency limit that is proportional to the flow resistance of the layer and which is substantially higher than that of an unconstrained sample of the same material. However, it was also found that the benefit of the circumferential edge constraint was reduced in a transitional frequency range by a shearing resonance of the sample. Here it will be shown that the effect of that resonance can be mitigated or eliminated by adding additional axial and radial constraints running through the sample. It will also be shown that the constraint effect can be modeled closely by using a finite element procedure based on the Biot poroelastic theory. Implications for low frequency barrier design are also discussed.
Geologic sequestration technologies such as CCS (carbon capture and storage), EGS (enhanced geothermal systems), and EOR (enhanced oil recovery) have been widely implemented in recent years, prompting evaluation of the mechanical stability of storage sites. As fluid injection can stimulate mechanical instability in storage layers by perturbing the stress state and pore pressure, poroelastic models considering various injection scenarios are required. In this study, we calculate the pore pressure, stress distribution, and vertical displacement along a surface using commercial finite element software (COMSOL); fault slips are subsequently simulated using PyLith, an open-source finite element software. The displacement fields, are obtained from PyLith is transferred back to COMSOL to determine changes in coseismic stresses and surface displacements. Our sequential use of COMSOL-PyLith-COMSOL for poroelastic modeling of fluid-injection and induced-earthquakes reveals large variations of pore pressure, vertical displacement, and Coulomb failure stress change during injection periods. On the other hand, the residual stress diffuses into the remote field after injection stops. This flow pattern suggests the necessity of numerical modeling and long-term monitoring, even after injection has stopped. We found that the time at which the Coulomb failure stress reaches the critical point greatly varies with the hydraulic and poroelastic properties (e.g., permeability and Biot-Willis coefficient) of the fault and injection layer. We suggest that an understanding of the detailed physical properties of the surrounding layer is important in selecting the injection site. Our numerical results showing the surface displacement and deviatoric stress distribution with different amounts of fault slip highlight the need to test more variable fault slip scenarios.

The present study demonstrates the application of seismic petrophysics and amplitude versus angle (AVA) forward modeling to identify the reservoir fluids, discriminate their saturation levels and natural gas composition. Two case studies of the Lumshiwal Formation (mainly sandstone) of the Lower Cretaceous age have been studied from the Kohat Sub-basin and the Middle Indus Basin of Pakistan. The conventional angle-dependent reflection amplitudes such as P converted P ($R_{PP}$) and S ($R_{PS}$), S converted S ($R_{SS}$) and P ($R_{SP}$) and newly developed AVA attributes (${\Delta}R_{PP}$, ${\Delta}R_{PS}$, ${\Delta}R_{SS}$ and ${\Delta}R_{SP}$) are analyzed at different gas saturation levels in the reservoir rock. These attributes are generated by taking the differences between the water wet reflection coefficient and the reflection coefficient at unknown gas saturation. Intercept (A) and gradient (B) attributes are also computed and cross-plotted at different gas compositions and gas/water scenarios to define the AVO class of reservoir sands. The numerical simulation reveals that ${\Delta}R_{PP}$, ${\Delta}R_{PS}$, ${\Delta}R_{SS}$ and ${\Delta}R_{SP}$ are good indicators and able to distinguish low and high gas saturation with a high level of confidence as compared to conventional reflection amplitudes such as P-P, P-S, S-S and S-P. In A-B cross-plots, the gas lines move towards the fluid (wet) lines as the proportion of heavier gases increase in the Lumshiwal Sands. Because of the upper contacts with different sedimentary rocks (Shale/Limestone) in both wells, the same reservoir sand exhibits different response similar to AVO classes like class I and class IV. This study will help to analyze gas sands by using amplitude based attributes as direct gas indicators in further gas drilling wells in clastic successions.
