A review is presented for various gas tranport mechanisms through microporous membranes of both polymeric and inorganic materials. Different transport modes manifest depending on the pore size and the flow regime, which is a function of pressure, temperature, and the inateraction between gas molecules and the pore walls. For microporous membranes whose pores are small and the intenal surface area huge, the surface diffusion becomes a significant factor. If the pores become even smaller, them the transport mechanism will be more of an activated diffusion type. When conditions are right capillary condensation will take place to create an enormous capillary pressure gradient, which will greatly enhance the permeation flux. At the same time the capillary condensate of the heavier component may block the membrane pores denying the passage of the lighter gas molecules. All of these phenomena will influence the separation of mixtures.
Onggi, which is described as a breathing pottery, has strongly influenced the traditional food culture in Korea. In this study Onggi is compared to porcelains including celadon and white porcelain to analyze the sources of pore formation. The differences in starting materials are examined for chemical and mineralogical compositions, particle size and distribution. The gas permeability of the fired samples is correlated to the matrix microstructure. The broad particle size distribution and high iron oxide content of Onggi are revealed as the major cause for the pore formation. Open pores are formed with large particles in the Onggi body while closed pores have a high iron oxide concentration. The Onggi body with increased open pores leads to the high gas permeability.

In this study, Ni-P layers were electroplated on the surface of stainless steel in order to investigate the effects of an additive and agitation on their mechanical properties and microstructure. The concentration of the additive in the plating solution increased, the pores formed in the layer decreased, while the residual stress developed in the layers during electroplating increased. Agitation of the solution during electroplating was observed to force to increase local pores in the layer, which lowers its tensile properties. Grain growth was suppressed due to very fine $Ni_3P$ precipitates formed at its grain boundaries during heat treatment at $343^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr in air.
For the present experiment five Portland cement mortars are in order: mortars with two different water/ cement ratios (W/C=0.45 and 0.50, each having no chemical additive), and those with an additive such as superplasticizer, air-entraining agent or water-repelling agent. We fix the W/C ratio of mortars having additive so that their pastes can yield the same workability as that of the cement mortar of W/C=0.50 with no additive. It is shown that the freeze-thaw resistivity depends heavily on the characteristic of wide pores. Despite a good deal of wide pores, the air-entrained specimen shows a good freeze-thaw resistivity due to appropriate air-pores. And also the specimen with water-repelling agent, which proves to cause the microstructure to become hydrophobic, make good resistance to freeze-thaw cycles in spite of its high wide-porosity. Our suggestion is that the freeze-thaw durability of Portland cement mortar/concrete can be more effectively enhanced by using air-entraining agent or water-repelling agent, and simutaneously by taking proper measures against foaming and/or the increased tendency of wide-pore building due to additive.
As a result of a taxonomic study on the earthworm material collected from Namat National Biodiversity Conservation Area (NBCA), Hoaphane Province, Laos, a new species, Pithemera viengthongensis sp. novo is described from near Namchong river, Viengthong district. The new species bearing two pairs of spermathecal pores in 7/8, 8/9 is not assignable to any other species of Pithemera as defined by Sims and Easton (1972). In the new species, the male pore region has kidney-shaped pads extending between XVII-19/20, the male pores and spermathecal pores are 0.31 circumference apart, and genital papillae are lacking. The ventral view of anterior body region and the spermathecae are illustrated.
With a view to manufacturing membranes for separation of gas mixtures, Al foils were anodized in a 2% oxalic-acid electrolyte at 40V and 80V. When anodizing was completed and Barrier layer existed at the extreme back site of the foil, the anodized foil was made to react with only electrolyte, with switching off the electric power. When the size and density of pores were changed through voltage change, the membr-anes did not show large difference in the permeability. Reacting with electrolyte, the existing Barrier layer turns into porous layer. During this process, several small pores grow from one relatively large pore, getting to the back site. The number and size of the small pores getting to the back surface increase as time passing. This change of Barrier layer into porous layer is thought to be directly related to the permeability change of the membranes. The selectivity of an anodized Al membrane was not related to the voltage change, and was high, being similar to the theoretical selctivity of metallic membranes, according to my observation.
In order to fabricate porous materials having an anisotropic thermal conductivity by aligning plate-shaped pores structure, alumina powder (AM-21, mean particle size $4\mum$) and flake crystalline graphite was used. The aligned pore structure was realized using multi-pressing process. Degree of pore orientation increased with the number of pressing and thermal conductivity, parallel to the pressing direction, decreased with the number of pressing. Thermal conductivity decreased significantly to the addition of 30vol% crystalline graphite, however, in the case of 60vol%, thermal conductivity did not decrease significantly due to the breakage of crystalline graphite. An anisotropy of the thermal conductivity increased with the content of crystalline graphite up to 30vol%. Graded pore structure was fabricated by controlling the content and size of crystalline graphite, which provides, possibly, the enhancement in mechanical strength and thermal insulation properties of the insulating bricks.
Isotropic pitch-based carbon fiber was isothermally activated in $CO_2$ atmosphere. Structural parameters of the isotropic carbon fibers and activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The $d_{002}$ and La of the carbon fibers were measured to be 4.04 ${\AA}$ and 23.6 ${\AA}$ and those of ACFs were 4.29 ${\AA}$ and 22.7 ${\AA}$, respectively, representing less ordered through activation process. The pores in the ACFs were characterized by BET, and they showed super-high specific surface area of maximum value 3,495 $m^2/g$ from average pore size of 8.3 ${\AA}$ at 59% burn-off. It was recognized that 8-9 ${\AA}$ was optimum range of pore size for efficient creation of high specific surface area. The average size of the pores formed at higher temperature ($1100^{\circ}C$) was larger than that of the pores formed at lower temperature ($900^{\circ}C$).
Well-dispersed slurries of submicron-sized alumina powders were pressure-infiltrated in 3D preforms of mullite fibers and the effects of the particle size and infiltration pressure on the particle packing characteristics were investigated. Infiltration without pressure showed that the packing density increased as the particle size decreased due to the reduction of the friction between the particles and the fibers. The infiltrated preforms contained large pores in the large voids between the fiber tows and small pores in the narrow voids between the individual fibers. Pressure infiltration resulted in a packing density of 77% regardless of the particle size or the infiltration pressure(210 ~ 620 kPa). Pressure infiltration shortened the infiltration time and eliminated the large pores in preforms infiltrated with the slurries of smaller particles. The slurry pressure-infiltration process is thus an efficient method for the packing of matrix materials in various preforms.
To investigate physical properties of Solar pores, we use SDO/HMI data from 2010 to 2013. For this, we select single and isolated pores from the active region (Axx, Bxo, Bxi and Bxc-type) listed in Solar Region Summary. Pore is defined by connected pixels satisfying the intensity threshold from pixel of minimum intensity. We try to obtain area, intensity, magnetic field, and Doppler velocity of pores from HMI data. After removing the effects of orbital motion of the SDO satellite and differential rotation of the Sun, we identify that significant daily variations of Doppler velocity with non-zero ordinates still remain in the umbral region, and the artifact is quite dependent on the strength of magnetic field and radial component of velocity of SDO satellite. In this study we develope empirical model to remove the artifact. A preliminary result on the elimination of the artifact will be presented.
